2016-17 SP Authentic Hockey Cards

I think in the future UD should include a update series instead of having it in SP Authentic like what they do with topps baseball they should do rookie debut all star cards etc. in the set like topps.

You can add Michael Matheson to the Black CL. Just hit one tonight. Sadly, it’s damaged and going back to UD.

Quality cards and just enough hits. Pricey but worth it.

SP A has always been my favourite. While I was scared of only 2 autos in the start I didn’t rate it yet until now. I think I had only one box with that, and if I can remember correctly I had a box with 4 autos twice. Sure the SOTT were garbage, and were hard to sell for $10 opening day but, Multiple boxes had two FWA min. All in all I was lucky to pull two guent yg, and 3 FWA /100, one was of a marquee player. I wouldnt recommend busting much now to try to recoup as the Spectrum set is now basically worthless as 50 people have already completed it. Sure you should still be able to get some decent return on level 3, they are tough pulls (I pulled one in 16 box case), and the value is way less now then opening day/week. It’s disappointing that UD wouldn’t give people an incentive to continue to try for the set even if it’s just one card or what not. Authentic moments and the base updates are tough to fetch .99 on eBay of the commons. Would like to know how many AM34 redemptions there actually were as UD has had the tendencies in the past to SP redemptions and considering it was him, wouldn’t be surprised if they only printed 100 of them /999. You probably will see a couple pop up as replacements going forward. I give it a 4, but I admit I’m biased as it is my favourite product of all time.

Notice how much the ratings changed AFTER the product dropped…It is a good product and offers several ultra high end cards if you’re lucky enough to pull one. Btw, I pulled and sold the Kevin Labanc Future Watch Black Gold Ink and I didn’t see it on your checklist.

I bought two boxes. My one box had two future watch auto’s but nothing special. Not much resale value maybe $10 each. However I did hit a Level 3 Future Watch Sergachev – It’s unsigned but to my surprise they have been going for about $60-70 online. This box is maybe a break even.

Box 2 – Hit a Nylander 017/999 so it’s inscribed with a date which sells for more. I believe the first 100 of 999 have a date.

If I can sell either online I’ll grab a couple more boxes or an 8 case inner. We shall see. I like the on card auto’s they are clean and nice.

To follow up my last two boxes each had three autos including a Laine FWA, FWA autos of Strome Dvorak and Jarry and a global auto of Bondra. I don’t think I can do much better. 13 autos in 4 boxes 11 of them FWA, 2 inscribed

I busted a case of SPA and was disappointed, 1 auto patch in the case and it was a 15/16, no real big hits. I did open a couple boxes at my local card store and did hit a FWA black gold auto of Guentzel, overall SPA is my second favorite product next to the CUP and this years look ok.

I really can’t complain. I got 7 autos in two boxes. 6 of them future watch, two of them inscribed. 3 Young Guns and 3 spectrum. Still have two boxes to open. I think people would like the product better if the Canadian dollar was stronger and you were paying 95$ instead of 125$. I get it

I see a lot of people complaining about the only 2 Auto thing… it’s between 2-4 autos per box. I know 2 Auto cards would not be great I understand that.. but people don’t realize you can get Auto cards with up to 8 autos. Most of the time you will get 3-4 autos but when you get only 2 Auto cards you have a really good chance of one being a multi Auto hit. I feel the 2 Auto boxes tend to have better hits. Could be just me but I’ve watched some breaks and got a box and that’s what I noticed.

Opened 2 boxes…one had 4 autos, the other had 2…Ive always loved this product and continue to.

You can add 136 Sergey Tolchinsky – Carolina Hurricanes to your black future watch gold ink checklist because I pulled one of them.

Haven’t ripped any let, but like the design. Based on the upper deck twitter account, the gold/black FWA’s are back this year. I’ve already seen a pic of the Strome card.

Cards look nice, very little value with a 2 auto box. Even 3 autos can hurt unless a big rookie shows its rare head. Forget about veteran or legend autos or memorabilia. Just way too rare. I hate the UD update crap, doesn’t belong here. Nothing really updated from past SPA releases except the new config. This wont fly next year with a weak rookie crop

Im going to give this a 4. The patches are straight up gorgeous and better than The Cup patches. Its about time that UD is not putting 1 colour patches in premium product. I bought a lot of cup last year and the patches were horrid for the most part. Also the Acetate is back. Took a star off for having base cards as “hits”. Whoever thought that was a good idea should be jobless right now.

Doug UD already puts out $350 packs and you only get 1-2 junk autos.

If you want 4 junk autos you have to pay $700+

But if you are still opening wax at this point from any company the joke is on you.

Never compare ud to panini. A company that more than floods the market with garbage autos. Would you rather ud put 4 autos a pack for 350 and all be junk. Any product us releases is always reasonable price to value and all have some duds. Bet you don’t complain if they get back into basketball

SP authentic now becomes a “below average product” – way to go UD…

tell a kid who has money to spend on 1 or 2 packs… at $7-8 per pack…. who pulls UD update cards — bleepin base cards –as his pack hits for $8 a pack.. really??

If you are gonna take out 6 packs per box – take out the filler and not the content that people are used to….
I can understand inserting a few more young guns sure… but not base cards as a hit.. totally deplorable… and unfortunate.
the rest of the whole product is basically the same…
The bounty program is basically just an added special program for case breakers to get some extra cards… as no regular collectors will be able to put together that full set before the big spenders to it and get the bonus cards. sucks to be a regular joe…. UD —-s on you again.

I just opened two boxes and personally I like the look of the base cards. One of the boxes had 3 autos, so 5 in total including a Future Watch Rookie Patch Auto.
I also ended up with 4 Spectrum and 4 Young Guns.
Lastly, it says in the checklist above that the Troy Stecher (Vancouver Canucks) Future Watch cards are unsigned. I pulled one and it does have an autograph.

Enjoy those mass produced Hudler, Huberdeau, Palmeiri and Victor Rask autos for your 2nd auto, like every other product this year. Laughable that they say this Bounty program is good for the hobby, do they expect people to spend thousands and thousands to get the CHANCE at 1 gold base sets? Wish I could give it zero stars for the greed factor.

Way to ruin one of your “staple” products Upper Deck!

I’m all for the new subset of Spectrum if it can sell well on the secondary market (eBay) tough not getting a second guaranteed FW auto, but if I can get 20-30 for a low end spectrum card player opening week or two, then in my opinion better then a trash SOTT that would only fetch 5-10. I am hoping the hype toward this set is big for people trying to duke it out to be the first 50 (though in my opinion this set isn’t worth to go after, and the reward isn’t compared to what you may spend.) These cards are basically a box hit, so if we see them open below 10$ then this product will be a disaster. As for updates UD, you would be surprised how much even base update UD go for opening week, not to mention everyone will want that Guentzel YG, hoping it will fetch 60-100

Looking forward to see how this product looks and how many boxes in a case only has 2 autos. I really hope it’s not the majority of the boxes. At least we won’t be overwhelmed with Ottawa Sign of The Times cards although they would probably sell well this year.

Stecher must be a budding superstar in UD’s opinion as he has two Future Watch cards, one auto (#191) and one non-auto (#164).

Was hoping Rodin/Labate would get a FW or at least a YG update but not happening.

Some nice Sign of the Times 2/3 for the Canucks, would love to get my hands on any one of them.

Looking at the checklist if your a maple leaf fan you probally will enjoy the set. But on the other hand if you collect Legends looks near impossible to get a good card. Taking the legends subset out I’m not a fan of. And as for these sp authentic update cards I can’t stand them. If i wanted 14-15 or 15-16 sp authentic id buy 1 of those boxes. Nothing worse than buying a box like I did with ice this yeAr and my auto was a crap rookie from 15/16. Why not just put a upperdeck update product out at the end of the year loaded with all you couldn’t get printed in time. Or at least if you get a update card it’s a extra and not part of what your supposed to get. It’s almost looking like UD doesn’t want to spend money on getting retired stars to sign. I know a ton of people would love a legends product.
Or even a legends and stars product. Yes there was masterpieces last year but I found the checklist very weak.
Unfortunately once again back to back years I’ll be staying as far away from this product as possible. Chance of pulling a half was decent auto looks like next to 0. Same as ice this year. I watched 3 full cases opened online and no /99 rc and I can’t even tell you the best card pulled. Probally the Tyler Johnson exquisite patch auto /125 I think. And they were master cases. I just don’t think they care about the collectors anymore and make it seem like they are doing the hobby a favour by (lowering the price of boxes) but just removing cards from boxes and producing more cases. Wonder what’s going to happen next year with what looks like one of the weakest draft class I’ve seen in a long time. (No afence to the young players) maybe they will lower the price more and take all base cards out of the mid end products and only real set with a large base set will be series 1&2 and OPC. Looks like it’s going in that direction. (great example when they made spx a 4 card box)
I will admit that for some reason I pull total crap out of ever box I buy at my local card shop but when ever I buy a box on epack I seem to do pretty well. I saw 2 ultimate mcdavid shields pulled on epack so guess that means that you couldn’t hit one in a pack from your card store ??????
Only time will tell if a conspiracy with this product will happen again where all the good cards get shipped to us Fat Canadians again. I found it very funny that people actually thought that.
At the end of the day I’ll buy a box and see how it looks. Probally odds of being disappointed will be In the high 90%. Mainly cause I’m not a leaf fan.

Buying at least 3 cases…spa has all the s*** you want in one, showcase/artifacts/game used are a joke and black diamond and cup offer best content but at 2-4 times the cost and very similar hit ratios for rookie card/autos…do the math

This looks like the normal SP Authentic product. I personally like the fact that they lost a lot of the 80 or so Authentic Moments and other subsets of the base set. This year they only left 15 Authentic Moments which makes much more sens, but they also dropped the Legends subsets of the base set that was very popular last year. The Immortal Ink Auto and Marks of Distinction Auto look much more nicer than the last year (my opinion at least). They reintroduced the Silver Skates that was missing last year. I think this is a popular insert. I don’t know what to say about the Spectrum FX inserts. It’s presented as a big hit per box, but the design looks rather dull and they are not even serial numbered. Anyhow, design and checklist wise (besides the Future Watch) are better than the last year.

Future Watch – You are still guaranteed a Future Watch Auto per box, but this year there are 74 instead of 59 (like last year). Giving that the rookie crops are rather similar, I’d say there are less chances to hit a good card this year. Now, what I really don’t understand is why 3 important rookies don’t have signed cards. Future Watch (all along with Young Guns) is one of the most sought after rookie cards (at least for an average price – I’m excluding high end products). Kapanen, Schmaltz, and Lehkonen don’t have signed Future Watch cards…

As for the price now. I am under the impression, according to some summary calculations, that the box this year will be 10$-15$ cheaper. But again, take this with a grain of salt. Anyhow, last year there were 100 cards/box from which 20 were inserts and autos, while this year there are only 90 with 18 inserts or autos. The main difference here is the third auto that is not guaranteed this year. Basically, if my calculations are correct, the number of cards and inserts/autos dropped by 10% comparing to the last year, but the price also is 10% lower. Again, the difference will be made by the third auto. I’m pretty sure that most of the boxes will have it and that the stores and big buyers who open many cases will not be affected too much by this. But, I’m under the impression that UD, by dropping one guaranteed auto and by increasing the number of Future Watch Autos, hit mainly the normal collector who only buys a box or two. If someone opens 2 boxes (let’s assume 300$) and has only 5 autos amongst which there are Santini and Lindell (no offence for them), will not be very happy and with reason…Time will tell. I don’t want to rate the product yet.

Upper Deck just destroyed one of their best products. What is this hobby coming too? Not good that is for sure. Cheaper, not by much at what our locals charge. I won’t be doing this set. Heck, maybe it is time to just get out of this hobby.

Need Panini back on the NHL market… Upper Deck can do whatever the hell they want, and charge whatever the hell they want b/c they have no competition. Less for more $$$ doesn’t work.. but they will sell regardless!! On stupid EPACK too unfortunately.. Greed is a discusting thing, and hope it bites them.. EPACK.. what a way to spit on all of these old card shops that have made you millions and millions for the past 27 years.. this is how you thank them? Boycott EPACK.. Save a card shop!

Upper Deck continues to ruin the hobby. Less autographs at a similar price as past years is absurd. 90% of the future watch autos will fetch ~$10 or less on the secondary market. Last year’s version had 3 autos and was only about $10 more when it debuted, so they just jacked up the prices of that box to justify the price on this one. And oh yeah, I’ve still been waiting years for the last 3 redemptions I had, including over 3 months on the one I replaced, so any redemptions will probably serve as good coasters.

Sucks that they don’t package future watch separately making it that much more harder to get them (especially the autos). Hoping for good products in the Upper Deck Update as rookie cards are all I’m interested in. Was considering adding Future Watch sets but not about to pay through the roof for boxes and a chance that I get one or two uniques in every box.

Like others have mentioned. It is totally unacceptable to not guarantee 3 autos and as the person above me wrote, 2 of them should be Future Watch autos. Enough with the over produced Sign of the Times.

I would give this Zero Stars if I could. Absolutley unacceptable to be guaranteed only two autos. And seriously, who cares about inscriptions? So what if it has a date or “go oilers.” I didn’t see retro listed, I liked those mini sets.
Avoid like the plague as a message to Upper Deck to stop ripping us off by charging more and giving less. There should be at least 2 Future Watch Autos in a box, with a 3rd of something else.
As for retros, why not do reprint sets of some of the best cards like Crosby 05-06 FW and Patch with reprint autos?
And I agree, get rid of the UD Update cards, unless they are a double hit in packs.

I’m disgusted…SP Authentic has always been my favorite set. I doubt I will buy any boxes or packs this year.

Was going to try to put the Legends Gold Autographed 30 card set together,found out that four players did not even sign!!!. B.Salming,Glenn Hall,Bobby Hull,Curtis Joseph Did not sign.Was a big fan of this product,Upperdick What the #%@*!!!

If they are going to put out only 2 autos and 18 packs than get rid of the update cards for the series 2 and put in the retro cards.

So it was $40 per auto and now it’s $50 per auto? That’s a GOOD thing???

And down two packs to 18 from 20 why?

What is Upper Deck thinking!! Of all the brands to make a change, this isn’t one that needed it. so, price remains over $100 a box but now 2 autos instead of 3?
