User Rating:

While Black Diamond Hockey is likely a familiar brand to most NHL collectors, things are a little different this year as 2015-16 Upper Deck Black Diamond has been re-configured with a high-end focus. The pack-per-box format also includes an Exquisite Hockey bonus pack.

The 2015-16 NHL rookie class is prominently featured in 15-16 Black Diamond. Over 20 rookies are included in Diamond Relic Rookie Cards (#/99) that contain one to four real diamonds. The total number of diamonds depends on the prospect tier. Yellow (#/5) and Black (1/1) parallels offer additional rarity.

The bling in 2015-16 Upper Deck Black Diamond Hockey also extends to veterans and retired greats. A Flashback Quad Diamond Rookie Relic for Wayne Gretzky is numbered to 99 and up to 50 veterans are also featured in the Diamond Relic set. These other veteran options are numbered to five and are also available as Black Diamond parallels (1/1). All diamond cards combine to average one per case.

Booklet Relics, Championship Rings, Team Logo Jumbos and Retired Numbers are other options that can be found in Black Diamond.

In addition to the premium Black Diamond cards, collectors will also receive one Exquisite Hockey pack per box as a bonus offering. Each pack has one card from the super high-end brand. Black Diamond is the first of several 2015-16 UD Hockey products that will contain these limited bonus packs for Exquisite.

Why didn’t upper deck leave Black Diamonds the way they were. You could have come out with a Black Diamond Ultra or something else creative, but many of us are disappointed. Maybe they will smarten up and go back to the old way. I can’t, as well as many others afford to dish out $275.00 for 1 pack, that is usually my budget for the year.

I’ve watched a ton of case breaks, and I have never seen decent value out of this product. Way too many manufactured items, from the oversized patches to the retired number banners to the cup rings.

Even the big draw, the diamond cards, aren’t very attractive.

NOT WORTH THE MONEY!!!!! I WILL DEFINETLY NOT BE BUYING A BOX OF THESE!

Decent Product but over all not real worth the money you have to lay down for a box or mini case.
Even on Ebay or other sites offering case breaks by bidding or buying directly a specific Hockey Team is a total waste and your throwing good money out the door. Exmpl ebay seen Bids for Edmonton in the $350 range that’s a total farce to pay that much for 1 Team.
You have better odds going with TEAM RANDOMS meaning for the $350.00 for 1 team you can get 5-6 TEAMS at $55.00 but now every one has jacked the prices on Team Randoms to $63-$65. every one feeding off McDavid and making a fast buck.

But going back to that $350 amount I paid for 6 Randoms for same amount and I did get Edmonton plus 5 other teams and out of the mini inner case I got 8 cards total including McDavid Jersey Auto Relics 104/149
So buying or bidding directly for 1 team is waste you have better odds with TEAM RANDOMS
But you can strike out on team randoms.
From the over all breaks I have seen Teams that get Hits more are few teams the rest is garbage
Top teams
Edmonton
Calgary
Chicago
Montreal
Nashville
Ottawa
Tampa
Carolina
Winnipeg

Mid Teams
Buffalo
Florida
Pittsburgh
Columbus
LA Kings
Arizona Coyotes
Boston
NY Rangers
St. Louis Blues

Bottom Hits
Detroit
Anaheim Ducks
Toronto Maple Leafs
Vancouver Canucks
Washington Capitals
Dallas Stars
Colorado Avalanche
Minnesota Wild
New York Islanders
Philadelphia Flyers
San Jose Sharks

The worst NEW JERSEY DEVILS not worth $10.00 but a lot on Ebay bidding $40-$60 for it.

Seems a lot has changed in the hobby world from 15 years ago, as I now see that they only way Expensive wax box will sell now a days is only through BOX/CASE BREAKS as its not worth dishing out $300.00 for 1 pack that has 5 cards in it. and hobby store are ring in the cash cause that’s they only way they are moving high end WAX BOXES. How many hobby stores do you see opening up 5-10 cases of high end products compare to the amount they use to open 15 years ago.

Most BOX/CASE Breakers if not all of them in online websites don’t sell/offer through Ebay cause that would just eat there pure easy money making profits.

I retract my previous comment after being one of the people lucky enough to hit a McDavid I realized where it says rookie at the top of the card has black missing and as I surf through eBay whether it’s a little or a lot every card is missing some and some far worse than others the biggest card in the set should be recalled as it is damaged go look for yourselves if you go on eBay and look at the mcdavids you’ll see exactly what I’m talking about

I notice the “5 stars” are being given by the ones who “got lucky” and got a hit or 2, or the rich who can afford it all. In the meantime, I’m stuck with a de la Rose with a Senators “manufactured” patch. And a card I want badly I’m not going to get because UD spelled his name wrong. Yes, BD needed an overhaul, but this??? Rediculous. I feel for anyone that was a BD set collector. Nothing is special anymore. The real diamonds should have stayed the way it was…..on a 1/1. Just adding more relics/autos would have boosted the product. I actually have 2 diamond cards, one single and one triple, and all the patch/auto cards I want, so it is not “boo hoo, I got nothing”. And yes, I bought into it, simply because my hometown boys are my PC. But I still think it is rediculous — the price for the amount of cards you get, the quality control, and the lack of being able to collect the set unless you’re filthy rich. Yes, the cards look nice. But not for the price. If you get a McDavid in every box, then yes, it’s worth it. But that isn’t reasonable and will drive his value down. But obviously UD is going to take every possible way to exploit him and this rookie year. When the next few years pale in comparison to this rookie class, UD will crash and burn, and they deserve it.

I’d like to know where they get the relics of the legends from?? Are they even from the player?? If a player isn’t even alive anymore, how does UD get a piece of his stick or glove or skate or whatever else?? No one knows if this stuff really is “game worn/used”. But we’re supposed to just trust a greedy company that has the monopoly on all the NHL I guess.

“The best card manufacturer” doesn’t even know how to SPELL the players names. Sounds like someone works for UD by their review. Please…..do us ALL a favor and empty everyone’s stock so we don’t have to deal with it. Only question now is……which product will be ruined next???????

Thanks Upper Deck for ruining my hobby. Until last year I was a set builder. Each year I tried
to complete 2 sets : O-Pee-Chee (easy until 2014-15) and my favorite Black Diamond!

Stopped OPC in 2014-15 because of the super SSP between 601 and I don’t give a F***
And now Black Diamond!

please NHL give more licences so that Panini or Leaf or Topps… can bring back some
passion in my favorite hobby!

Bought a case of this. Feel like I took it up the rear by upperdeck. The single diamond Henrik Lundqvist topped off the worst case I’ve ever bought of any product ever. I did get a McDavid manufactured patch though…lmao

Even if I got one card that I liked I might consider it worth it, but I didn’t get a single card worth anything to me or the market.

two random boxes two big hits any box cheap or not is a gamble but im liking this bang for my buck

I could not disagree more with all of these guys. Everything especially cost are relative. This is one of the more special years in hockey. This rookie class is one of the best in years. Maybe the best ever and time will determine that . So having said that I’m glad that the best card manufacturer changed the format as to making the year special. I been collecting sports cards since the early 1960’s and this run of cards is hands down the prettiest that I have ever seen. I love the fact that they include the legends of the sport. The men who made the sport what it is. Also I enjoy all he different ways they introduce these great players to the hobby. Pieces of their jerseys, their autographs. So I want to thank Upper Deck and applaud them for producing one of the most amazing and up to date product that I have ever seen. If I ever won the lottery in the next few weeks I would go and clean out every retailer of this and empty out their stock and enjoy myself for days on end. Just like the poor me sits and looks at these beautiful cards on e- bay……Cliff

Ah, yes. I forgot about the “Upper Deck” patches. Is that a “rub in your face you HAVE to buy me or you get nothing” thing??? And the faux patches….yeah, “ha ha, these suckers have to buy SIX fake patches to make the whole logo”. Are they going to do anything for the customers that ended up paying probably hundreds of dollars for cards, just to have critical errors like misspelled names and wrong logos??? I doubt it very much. HEY NHL…..SEE WHAT’S BEING DONE FOR YOUR LOYAL FANS?? WE’RE BEING GIVEN GARBAGE FOR A RIDICULOUS PRICE!! BRING BACK THE COMPETITION!!!!! God, I wish there was -5 rating……

JG

I understand we’re currently deep in McDavid mania…but come on…this is so incredibly overpriced for what it actually is. UD has no right to charge this much for cards that aren’t even hard auto’d.

I’m 50% sour grapes I will admit…buying in Detroit for 5 consecutive case breaks…and I got…maybe $40 worth of cards? hmmm…something aint right…

I really can’t comprehend the hype regarding the faux patches…not to mention an “Upper Deck” patch…really?…no seriously, really?

Base Card in bonus pack and manufactured patches for a high end release are not acceptable.

Kevin C.
Kevin C.

So….so far within the week of release, I see a Montreal “manufactured patch” on a Senators player’s card, an Ottawa “manufactured patch” on a Montreal players card, and a player’s name spelled wrong (Nikolah Ehlers instead of Nikolaj Ehlers — black auto card /99). For a “new, revamped high end” product, ARE YOU SERIOUS UPPER DECK????? Where is the quality control?? You think I want a card that costs me a small fortune to have his name spelled wrong?? HORRIBLE. And to think I was excited for this product. How many other errors got by you??? That’s only within a week!! SHAMEFUL.

HH
HH

Many of the manufactured patches of McDavid are off center, you can see the seam. Yuk! No QC what so ever. And all the pictures of McDavid I have seen so far are clearly not game action shots. I’m guessing pics from the rookie get together thing. The rookie card is brutal. I wouldn’t want it for a buck! I’m so glad his young guns isn’t like that.

Upper Deck please do a better job on his YG canvas card. Make it a great game action shot. I want to own one…..

Rippinwax – I’m sure I saw one of those /99 McDavids on eBay for over 2000 usd in auction. I say sell it NOW!

Aaron B

The only reason this product is worth buying is the chance to hit a big McDavid or Eichel. The best cards IMO are the Exquisite hits that come out of the box. I think UD failed when they went high end and used manufactured patches that have little to no value. Its like buying a knockoff and claiming its the real deal.

For the price point, people are most likely going to participate in group breaks. With that said the balance from team to team is HORRIBLE! UD could have at least provided more hits from the top players from every team so everyone can enjoy this product on a broader scale.

I was one of the lucky ones to hit a McDavid Exquisite and the reason this only gets 2 stars and not 1 is because of the McD and Eichel hits. If you don’t mind spending big money to chase the Exquisite, true rookies, or diamond McD/Eichels this product is for you!!!

Manufactured patches….such a disgrace for a high end product.

Rippinwax

So I cracked a mini case and was shocked at all the manufactured patches. I hit a Connor McDavid quad diamond rookie card out of /99 and will actually end up ok if and when I sell it. Not worth $300 a box. It will end up sitting along with The Cup at $650 in the wholesalers warehouse. Too bad they had a chanc to kill it and well they killed it!

So last night I did some ‘low end’ breaks of this with Flyers, Minnesota, San Jose and NJ. While I can’t complain about having bad luck with lower tier teams with virtually no cards, I was appalled at the quantity of manufactured patches, base cards and sticker autos in a product that cost closer to CUP pricing than MVP. Not a wise 118 dollars for the two cards I got, but live and learn.

eric
eric

Wow! not as big a train wreck as Panini Eminence, but this is horrific! manufactured patches (some with with the wrong patch! some that actually say Upper Deck or Black Diamond!) not always an auto per box and who designed the banner cards?? Just a terrible execution for what could have been a solid re-invention of a staple brand. What happens to UD next year when McDavid doesn’t carry the products anymore?

JP

Absolute garbage again. Man do I miss the good old days when Brian Price was in charge of ITG.

P.Stewart

Upper Deck does it again. $275.00 for 6 cards. One of which is a worthless base card. Sticker autos and manufactured patches. This stuff is absolute garbage. This is a definite avoid. I know some people are gonna chase eichel and mcdavid rookies. But to pay this price point for the chance to get one of those cards is insane.

ray
ray

Two boxes no autos… Manufactured patches and $275 Looks like they just took what they had left over and packaged it to look nice. Kind of like you can get a bottle of cologne for $20 or you can get a fancy bottle, the cologne named after a celebrity for $300

For a High End product I find there are too many redemptions, manufactured patches, and sticker signatures. The product is fine, but there are some finitions problems and small issues such as the one mentioned above that make it just average. It has a real potential though…

And again, the white “patches” drive me crazy. I don’t know if Panini did the same thing, but I find it most disrespectful for the clients when UD puts basically a white cloth and say it’s a patch.

UDsux

so which cards are the Rookie Cards.. normally considered part of the Base Set???

It used to be Rookie Gems… and there are base versions of those? only 16 cards in that set..
but here it normally shows RCs right after the base set.. but those would be the diamond cards

diamond cards are like 1 in 10 packs – 27 cards in that set
where as Rookie Gems are 1 per pack – different variations – 16 card set…

BOOOO.. for not makin clear RC cards at all… NOT at ALL – which is what people really want…
just a whole product full of Inserts and more Inserts….
Upper Deck is spiralling into stupidity and levels of moronicity (new word just for them)..never before stooped to by any card company..
NHL.. revoke their license NOW!!!

one star is 10 stars too many

reminds me a lot of UD Black, manufactured patches to appear like a good hit but is actually worthless. Of course the McDavids will sell for insane amounts of money but everything else will not justify the pack price

Mike V

The first thing I thought of after looking at this checklist is how some teams have virtually no cards, which will make for interesting pricing on team and random breaks. I can say I wouldn’t be buying my Flyers in any team break unless they’re incredibly cheap, that’s for sure.

Come on, the criticisms of this are ridiculous. As is rating a product “one star” months before it even comes out.
There are SEVERAL Upper Deck sets that are low and mid-end and are perfect for set builders and pack buyers and people on a budget: MVP, O-Pee-Chee, Artifacts, Series One, and Series Two, SP Authentic, and the Fleer Products. How many base sets do you need???? Rather than split your collecting dollars between multiple mid end sets that have no resale value, buy more SPA or Series 1/2 and increase your chances of hitting something big. Most collectors nowadays throw away the base so it makes perfect sense for a company to move toward an “all hit” format anyway.
So many retired players are included because quite frankly most of the 600 players that play in the NHL today don’t have any collecting value (monetary or sentimental), and certainly won’t have any value or demand in the future. Companies have to produce stuff that people want to buy…

Upper Deck has taken the fun out of collecting- no buying this one-we need some competition
which makes everyone try harder-really miss Panini.

The though process is correct, Black Diamond needed an overhaul. This, however, is uninspired. What is new and exciting to warrant the higher price? They are milking the McDavid cow without anything creative. Raising prices, removing content and leaving innovation out of the equation.

I am sick and tired of having so many retired players in every set. You are making NHL cards for the current year. If they aren’t playing, they don’t deserve to be in the set. We don’t need more cards of Theo Fleury and Bill Ranford. If you want to make old players, make a whole set of them. Leave current sets to current players. There are 600 players in the NHL and you make cards for less than 100 of them. I wont buy any of these.

Jammer

I like the idea they are going with here, but I actually really liked black diamond how it was and was looking forward to it this year.
