2015 Topps Tier One Baseball Cards

Product Details

User Rating:

2014 Topps Tier One Baseball is for those looking for autographs and memorabilia cards with relatively clean designs. If you're looking for something different in your baseball cards, you'll want to look elsewhere. Boxes come with three cards: two autographs and one relic. Every fourth pack comes with a second relic.

The first signed card is a New Guard Autograph. The checklist has nearly 100 young players. All are numbered to 399 or less and signed on-card. With such a large pool of players to draw from, not all of these are going to be superstars but the the law of averages suggests there should be a decent cross-section of players for most teams.

Acclaimed Autographs also have a big checklist, this time with more than 85 current and retired players. Also hard-signed, all are numbered to 299 or less.

Tier One Autographs return as a case hit. These spotlight all-time greats and Hall of Famers with on-card signatures. These are numbered to 99 or less.

New Guard, Acclaimed and Tier One Autographs also have parallels based on the ink color used for the signature: Red Ink (#/25), Silver Ink (#/10) and Gold Ink (1/1).

Clear One Autographs (#/25) use a layered approach with acetate to help make the signatures pop. The set has 20 cards.

Those looking for signatures from multiple players can find Dual Autographs (15 cards, #/25) and Triple Autographs (five cards, #/10).

The basic autograph lineup in 2015 Topps Tier One Baseball rounds out with Cut Signatures. The set has 25 cards, all of which are one-of-ones. Another ten cards come with an added relic.

Tier One Relics use game-used gear from more than 75 active and retired players. All are numbered to 399 or less. Dual-Swatch parallels are numbered 50 while Triple-Swatch versions are numbered to 25. Tier One Legends Relics follow a similar pattern but with a more limited supply. Base versions are numbered to 99 or less. Dual-Swatch cards have 25 copies each while Triple-Swatch cards are numbered to 5.

Autographed Tier One Relics are some of the few cards in the product to use stickers for autographs. Numbered to 99, the 25-card set has a patch swatch join the signature. These also have Dual-Patch (#/25) and Triple-Patch (1/1) parallels. Dual Autographed Tier One Relics (25 cards, #/10) have autographs and patches from two players.

As with past incarnations of the brand, elusive relics make for some of the top cards in the product. Prodigious Patches (25 cards, #/10) have jumbo patch pieces. Autographed Prodigious Patches (25 cards, #10) have the massive patch as well as an on-card signature. These also have Platinum parallels numbered to 5. Limited Lumber cards are all numbered 1/1 and come with a premium part of a game-used bat. Bat Knobs (1/1) return with a large roster of more than 100 players, each highlighted on a card with the end of one of their bats. Twenty-five players also have Autographed Bat Knobs cards. All-Star Relics (1/1) have a jumbo patch swatch from an All-Star workout jersey.

2015 Topps Tier One Baseball Product Review

Reviewed by Ryan Cracknell

Good: Lots of on-card autographs, clean designs, finds an identity in a crowded market.

Bad: High-numbered, plain memorabilia cards, many boxes aren’t going to deliver what most expect from an all-hits product.

The Bottom Line: Giving a detailed review for something like 2015 Topps Tier One based on one box is tough as there’s only three cards go from with the live stuff. And I’ll be up front, there was a monster in this box. That being said, one card in one box doesn’t make this product a home run, just like one skunk box shouldn’t tear it down. 2015 Topps Tier One Baseball is a solid product from a design and content perspective. It also benefits from the recall of 2015 Topps Tribute, which has cut down on some of the similar content hitting the market within a couple of months of each other. That said, there are still too much plain memorabilia cards that are numbered high enough that it kills any of the high-end boost they might get from landing in a product like this.

Staff Rating:
3.6 / 5.0

Card Design: 4.0/5.0

Brands like Museum Collection, Tribute and even Panini Immaculate use white space to their advantage to make for a clean look. 2015 Topps Tier One Baseball is much busier, but it’s not busy. Most have a dark backdrop that provide a nice balance between image and space for the autographs and relic pieces. Gold foil, which can often be gaudy, holds it together with some nice pop.

Basic autographs are given the on-card treatment, something that Topps continues to focus on with their high-end sets. And so they should. Anything at this price tag, hard-signed should be the norm, not the exception. Many of the autographed relics are given the sticker treatment, which definitely takes them down a notch.

Checklist: 3.5/5.0

If you’ve opened Tier One in the past, you know what to expect. The big names are in here but so are the Chase Headley, Mike Matheny and Hector Santiago. That creates a big disparity between a good box and a really bad one. However, it does appear that there’s a better balance than there has been in the past.

One thing that continues to impress me about Tier One is how bat knobs have become a focal point of the brand. It helps give it some identity. With the Limited Lumber premium bat pieces added this year, it fits in nicely. It also bolsters the number of possible hits. Yes, even combined they’re still very tough to pull but for some it might be worth chasing.

Value: 3.0/5.0

This ties right back into the checklist. The box I opened would really strong based on one card, a Mike Trout autographed dual patch. But that’s not the norm. There was also a Kennys Vargas autograph numbered to 399. It’s a good looking card, but hardly in the ballpark of what the price tag warrants. Dropping even further down was the relic card — a plain white swatch of Stephen Strasburg numbered to 399. It’s almost be better not to have the unsigned relics in here at all outside of the bat knobs and Prodigious Patches if that meant some more overhead could be shifted into a stronger autograph lineup.

The Fun Factor: 4.0/5.0

This is where pulling a Mike Trout autograph might shade my judgment a little bit, but for a moderately priced high-end product (if such a thing exists), 2015 Topps Tier One is solid. It’s a fast break that can end badly but anyone who has ever busted an all-hits product knows this. The nice designs and on-card focus are big pluses. If Topps can continue to find ways to get rid of some of the lower-tier signers without raising costs much, that would be a big plus too.

Now that the Cubs are out of the playoffs it’d be nice if they’d start finishing up the Kris Bryant redemption from this set. Got a nice one /25 coming with Bronze ink, I can’t wait to see what they look like. Can’t find any source of info on these and I asked Topps on twitter if they had an eta and they didn’t reply as a comment about the last redemption update being live.

I really hope it looks nice, I scored mine online early on as soon as the first wave hit the secondary market and paid only $50 more than the base autos were going for at the time. I lucked out and saw the listing as soon as the guy posted it and I bought it within 3 minutes of it being listed on sale. Then I saw them jump and thankfully I got mine I hope they don’t have multiple poses like some of the cards, that’d mean more of the colored autos and 1/1’s.

I still can’t believe after I pulled a Maikel Franco 1/1 I saw another one on eBay for sale that was the other pose, they shouldn’t make multiple 1/1’s thats just wrong.

I bought a few boxes, hit the Maikel Franco New Guard Autographs 1/1 Gold Ink NGA-MFR , The new original pic that doesn’t have his pic from 2014 Bowman (ahem NGA-MFO). I saw they made a 1/1 of that other card with the rehashed picture and it just sold on eBay. Tried but didn’t complete the set so I may sell this one too.

If you buy cards just to make money then you are starting at a loss. I buy to enjoy and if I pull a good hit, so much the better. Lucked out on 3 boxes of Tier one. One had a Kris Bryant redemption auto, next one had a Greg Maddux /25 auto, last box had C.J. Cron auto /25 plus a Galarraga auto. Relics were so-so. Cards look good with no flaws or defects. Overall a good looking product. Granted it is a small amount of cards in a box. Yes, it is more fun to rip a box of jumbo packs as I am a set builder.

Agree with the above and I have not seen this product yet, but hope to see some opened tonight. The expectation to get 100% resale value from cards pulled from a box is unrealistic. It’s not “donating” the money to Topps if you enjoy collecting as a hobby, which goes well beyond simply buying and re-selling the cards like they are on the stock market. Ie., collecting certain teams or players, set-building, organizing the cards in binders, displaying them in cases, etc. is all part of the fun of the hobby for many people.

However, for me, the percentage of the box price you are able to obtain in resale value does determine whether it is a good value product or not. My general rule of thumb is I want the top cards from the box to have a resale value of half the box price. For instance, if I spend $100 on a box that comes with four guaranteed hits, I would expect the resale value of those hits PLUS the other best cards in the box (ie., serial numbered cards or variations of top players) to be $50.

That’s very difficult to accomplish when the box only has 3 cards, because you need at least one of those cards to be a top player or extremely low numbered. Generally, it is much tougher to get a good value in the high-end products, but the likelihood of achieving a great value with a massive hit is increased. Most of the time, I’d rather take my chances with the mid-end products. They are more fun from a collecting standpoint (you actually get lots of cards) and the odds are decent that you can defray a substantial amount of the box price by reselling the top cards of the box (unless they are keepers for the PC).

I know you reference this in your message but I am one of those that agree that cards have their most value when they are in unopened boxes or packs. With every set/series if you sale the cards that you got from the box/pack you are not going to get back what you paid for the box/pack unless you hit something real big in the box/pack. That is just the way the hobby is.

correction. 2014 tier one. maybe they’ve improved?

I’ve purchased 2 boxes thus far, and have participated in group breaks. I am very disappointed in the results. The autographs were of subpar players, and the jersey cards were without innovation. Honestly, unless you pull one of their large hits, you will fail to receive purchase value for the cards. Some people like to argue against expecting equal, or near value when you purchase a hobby box. As for myself, i prefer to donate my money to charity, not to Topps. I will not be rebuying hobby boxes, but may purchase autos on a secondary market.
