2015 Topps Heritage Minor League Baseball is one of those sets that delves into the past to highlight the future of the sport. When put that way, it sounds kind of like something H.G. Wells-ian, but it's not. Like 2015 Topps Heritage Baseball (the MLB version), it uses the 1966 Topps Baseball design to give a throwback feel. 2015 Topps Heritage Minor League Baseball comes with two autographs and a relic card per box.

The base set comes with 200 cards. While the majority are regular player cards, there is a League Leaders subset. Parallels include Blue, Gum Damage, Orange (#/25), Printing Plates and Black (1/1). There are also 25 short print variations.

Signed cards come in a couple of varieties. Real One Autographs carry over from the main Heritage line. However, unlike their MLB counterparts, signatures here are on stickers. Numbered parallels include Blue, Orange (#/25), Printing Plates and Black (1/1). Looming Legacy Autographs bring signatures of former MiLB greats. Base versions are serial numbered. The only parallels here are Printing Plates and Black (1/1).

Memorabilia cards once again fall under the Clubhouse Collection Relics banner. All come with a piece of game-used gear. Parallels follow the common Blue, Orange (#/25), Printing Plate and Black (1/1). Printing Plate and Black versions come with patch swatches. Collectors can also find Clubhouse Collection Autographs.

2015 Topps Heritage Minor League has a couple of basic insert sets as well. Minor Miracles puts a spotlight on some of the best MiLB performances of 2014. Road to the Show highlights different teams and levels players have suited up for in their quest to make the majors.

The Make Your Pro Debut promotion returns. The grand prize winner receives a locker and uniform with a MiLB team, a chance to participate in warm-ups and batting practice. They also get to throw out the first pitch before the game and more.

Product Configuration: 24 packs per box, 9 cards per pack
Price Point: Low-End Football Card
Target Audience: Prospectors, Set Builders, Retro Card Fans, MiLB Card Collectors

2015 Topps Heritage Minor League Baseball Product Review

Reviewed by Trey Treutel

Good: Popular Heritage design, some notable MLB autograph subjects in Looming Legacy.

Bad: Sticker autographs, no variations this year, one-note feel.

The Bottom Line: While 2015 Topps Heritage Minor League adds the Looming Legacy Autographs with names like John Smoltz and Chipper Jones, the removal of the variations combined with no other notable additions leaves the product feeling a little stale. As a detailed minor league set, it is unique enough to have niche interest, but I still expected a little more.

Staff Rating:
2.9 / 5.0

Card Design: 3.0/5.0

Minor league stars meet the 1966 Topps design. Given its usage in the main Heritage set and High Numbers, many collectors are likely familiar with it and it works here as well. Because of the limited options for MiLB cards, it is a nice retro alternative to Pro Debut. While the design is simple, I do appreciate the League Leaders subset as a nod to the past.

Among the parallels, things are pretty standard except for the Gum Damage Backs. While that remains an amusing concept, the originality of it is not as strong and it seems to be a common theme with all the Heritage lines the year. I do wonder why the Chrome parallels are not included here.

Sticker autographs on a base design are normally doomed from the beginning and Heritage Minor is no different. On-card autographs would have been a huge addition but that seems to be the refrain from collectors each year.

With only two basic inserts and a plain design, there is not much to get excited about and part of that can be attributed to keeping with the feel of the product. I did like how The Road To The Show charted each player’s promotion through the minors by way of stars that noted each stop.

Checklist: 3.0/5.0

Since many of the top prospects got the call this year, the name power is not as impressive in Heritage Minor. That fact is not helped by the low percentage of Triple-A players.

Similar to the base set, with the Real One Autograph subjects, there is not a ton of depth and the few key names already have been called up.

One big plus for the checklist comes from the Looming Legacy Autographs. Former big names featured in their minor league appearances not only adds strength to the checklist, but offers options for traditional MLB collectors.

Value: 3.0/5.0

Value is tricky concept in general, but especially so for Heritage MiLB. Geared toward nostalgia and minor league collectors, there are not a ton of high-value cards to pull but that is not really what the product is about. Still, with no variations and a likely chance at two low-value sticker autographs plus a plain jersey relic, this is not the product to buy expecting to pull anything close to the cost. The short prints and Gum Backs do help some.

The good thing is that prices start on the lower side and will likely dip more over time. This means that collectors should be satisfied if they have realistic expectations about the product.

The Fun Factor: 2.75/5.0

I generally appreciate the retro products for what they are. However, I feel like the concept can lead to very little innovation and this is clearly the case here. Sure the set honors the past, but why not try something fun or exciting to make it special like High Numbers? Minor league collectors will likely be interested no matter what, but a cool or clever insert, parallel or idea should not just be reserved for the modern-themed products. Pro Debut did a great job of that in 2015 and Heritage Minor League might need some fresh new ideas while still working within the retro theme.

Just wanted to give everyone a heads up. The Nomar Mazara road to the show #15 is an error card. Mazara is a left handed batter. The player on the card is Hanser Alberto. I’m a huge Ranger fan and noticed it immediately.

As a collector, I really enjoy this set. It is fun. I disagree witha few posters above regarding players lower than AAA. I enjoy seeing faces that you do not know, wearing uniforms you rarely, if ever, actually see. I Even if said players have zero chance of ever putting on a major league uniform. Mostly, because the vast majority of Americans do not live too close to an MLB team, and most people who live near a professional team, is likely to be a minor league team of some sort. My hometown, for instance, is a Short-A team; Williamsport Crosscutters. I like the fact that there is a chance that my hometown team could be represented in a major product with a nationwide distribution.

Having said that, I also like how the writer of the review above is fair, regarding “value.” Yeah, you probably cannot recoup very much of the cost of purchasing a box of these by flipping. This is a collectors’ set, and the low price point / low value reflects this. However, the fact that the value does not match up with the price point should reflect a moderate hit in the rating.

Just busted a box since I haven’t tried it yet this year, and it was rather meh.

I did find 4 high number SP’s including Josh Bell, and I PC him so that’s cool at least. Got Corey Seager, Matt Olson, and Nomar Mazara too. I got 3 of the Blue border cards, and one Orange of Nick Gordon #01/25 that is pretty sweet. Other than that a lot of bleh.

My two autos were Jacob Dahlstrand (Who?) and Trey Supak (hey another Pirate not horrible #2 rd pick from 2014)

Overall I don’t think I’ll buy any more but it’s a decent product. I usually spend a good bit every year on Pro Debut I personally like those minor league cards and I hunt the autos and SPs of guys I collect but the values of Minor League cards is still mostly in the gutter I wish it wasn’t like that I personally like Team USA and minor league cards of the superstars before they broke out.

Love the concept and design of Heritage cards. This is the most fun set of each year I think. One box very nearly completed the base set. I do think they need better autos. No offense but 3rd-4th tier players such as middle relievers like Burawa and Dahlstrand are not appealing to collectors. But I guess at this price point, it’s hard to complain.

Some fun inserts and parallels to search for. Always keep these for at least a few months till Topps releases the full checklist. They always have some unknown parallels that you need to go back and search for months later. This time, it’s the bubblegum backs. How can you not love that?

Design and concept: 5 (love throwback)
Checklist: 3 (good base list, some lousy autos)
Value: 4 (cheap price so you don’t have to pull a 1 of 1 to be happy)
Fun Factor: 5 (always the most creative set of the year)

Pulls:
Black border Tyler Naquin (woohoo!), CCR-aaron judge, 2 bubblegum backs, 4 high numbers, 3 blue borders, 2 autos (dahlstrand, burawa).

Strange I also came up 9 cards short of a complete non s/p (1-200) set. I’ll check with some other friends to see if this is a norm. All in all it’s not a bad product.

Ed M.
Ed M.

Opened a box today. Nice cards, solid and sturdy. Came 9 cards short of a complete set (1-200). The box contained four short prints (Alfaro, Edwards, Sano, Stewart). There were three blue parallels, and one orange parallel (25/25 Refsnyder).

Only disappointment was the autographs. Grant Hockin and Harold Ramorez, of the AZL Indians and West Virginia Power, respectively.

Glad to see a good number of Tennessee Smokies and myrtle Beach Pelicans to represent the Cubs organization. But yeah, the lack of AAA guys is somewhat maddening.

Box was $58 at our LCS. may buy another to try and finish the set, stock up on prospects and hope for a couple better autos.

One thing I really dig are the leader cards toward the end of the base set. Good excuse for a couple cards that feature Kris Bryant.

Always love Heritage Minor! I found that 217 Tyler Kolek is numbered 317. No idea if this an error but I’ve yet to see another 217 surface.

Do you know if there will be base card variations in this years set?

Dave There was no mention of it in the sell sheet and I have not come across any thus far.

This set comes out on Friday, and while I haven’t seen the cards, I have reviewed the checklist.

I bought baseball cards as long ago as 1961, but I lost interest in baseball after the World Series was cancelled in 1994 due to the strike.

In 2011, I saw a pack of cards in Target that read “Today’s stars in the 1962 design.” I bought one pack. I was hooked again!

With this minor league set, Topps makes two huge errors, in my opinion.

1. Too many Class A players, and far too few Triple-A players. I’d much rather get cards of players I may have heard of.

2. Too many players featured in previous Heritage Minor League sets. A few may be appropriate, players with huge potential such as Corey Seager with the Dodgers organization. But I’d rather see guys pulled from the 40 man roster, because these guys have a better chance of making the majors some day.

Overall, however, I love Topps Heritage!

Glad to see Rafael Devers with an auto in there! Two autos per box, nice!

When will we get a checklist for this product?

Brandon Topps usually provides the checklist around one week before the release date. We post them as soon as we receive them. I imagine we will have it today or Monday.
