User Rating:

2015 Topps Heritage High Number Baseball takes the product back to a more traditional pack-based product. In recent years, it has been done as a premium-style factory set, first as an online exclusive then offered in hobby shops. Like the main Heritage set that is also based on 1966 Topps, hobby boxes promise one autograph or relic card.

The 2015 Topps Heritage High Number Baseball base set has 225 cards. Similar to Topps Update, it focuses on rookies and veterans who have found new homes. Numbering of the set continues on from the early-season release. The final 25 cards (#701-725) are short prints that land 1:3 packs. A total of 25 players have Action Variations that come with a different photo.

Collectors can also find Blue Back parallels. Fifty cards have Mini versions that are numbered to 100. Chrome cards, another partial parallel, return. In addition to basic versions, there are numbered Refractor, Black Refractor (#/66) and Gold Refractor (#/5) versions.

On the signature front, Real One Autographs are front and center. The checklist has a mix of current and retired players. Special Edition red ink versions return, numbered to 66 copies each. Real One Dual Autographs (#/25) have a pair of signatures. 1966 Cut Signatures (1/1) feature both baseball players and autographs of other figures who made an impact in the mid 1960s.

Clubhouse Collection Relics anchor the memorabilia portion of the release. Basic versions have Gold parallels numbered to 99. There are also Dual (#/66), Triple (#/25) and Quad (#/10) versions with multiple players. Clubhouse Collection Autographed Relics are numbered to 25 while Dual Autograph Relics are limited to ten copies each.

2015 Topps Heritage High Number Baseball has a few other basic inserts as well. Now and Then carries over from the main Heritage set, combining highlights from 2015 with similar achievements from 1966. Rookie Performers replaces New Age Performers with a focus on key 2015 first-year players. Award Winners note those who took home some major hardware in 2014. Finally, there's Combos, which feature multiple players.

Hobby boxes come with a box loader. These can be Ad Panels, a strip of three cards, or a 1966 Topps Originals Buyback. These are cards from 1966 that have been given a foil stamp noting they've been reinserted in the product. 1966 Baseball Punchboards are the toughest of the box loaders to find. Basic versions are numbered to 50. There are also Jumbo Patch (#/25), Autograph (#/10) and Jumbo Patch Autographs (#/10).

Product Configuration: 24 packs per box, 9 cards per pack
Price Point: Low-End Baseball Card
Target Audience: Heritage Fans, Set Builders, Nostalgic Collectors, Rookie Collectors

PARALLEL CARDS: Gum Damage (1:43), Blue Backs (1:375), Black & White, Glossy Back
*It is believed that the Blue Back and Glossy Back parallels all have similar rarity and a print run of ten or less. The B&W parallels appear to the be the rarest. However, this has not been confirmed by Topps.

2015 Heritage High Number Baseball Product Review

Reviewed by Trey Treutel

Good: Format change to full release from box set in 2014, on-card autographs, several unannounced additions.

Bad: Autograph OR Relic card counts as box hit, player portraits on base cards can easily become stale.

The Bottom Line: On the surface, there is nothing amazing in 2015 Heritage High Number Baseball. However, the move to a full release instead of a factory set combined with a good mix of content puts High Number in a special place among low-end baseball products. Add to that a variety of short prints and parallels and the stacked 2015 rookie class, and Heritage High Number is a legit contender for collectors.

Staff Rating:
3.8 / 5.0

Card Design: 3.5/5.0

On one hand, it is easy to be a little burned out with the 2015 Heritage design. As the third product to focus on 1966 Topps after Heritage and Heritage Minor League, the cards can all start to blend together. Having said that, the base design remains solid.

Chrome parallels are less common, with just a few per box, but they offer a nice contrast without going overboard and a great way to break up the many base cards.

While the Real One Autographs remain the core draw of the product, mainly due to the simplicity of the design and hard-signed content, none of the base inserts really caught my eye. However, they were distinct enough to be easily distinguished and I still felt like they continued the theme of the set.

Checklist: 4.25/5.0

Thanks to rookie cards for a number of the key 2015 names, including Kris Bryant and Carlos Correa, the base checklist boasts quantity and quality. This carries over to the autograph checklist as well. Obviously there will always be some weak options, but the signers are mostly well-known players from the past or young talents.

Adding to the base set, there are also two main sets of variations. Once again included, the Action Image variations at least offer something a little different, especially since most of the base card images look very similar. However, the Color Swap variation also return and continue to feel like a generic idea.

Although variations saw a decrease from the main Heritage set, the parallel options increased. In addition to the Blue Back and Gum Damage, Glossy Back and Black & White parallels offer a very tough chase and are surprise inclusions.

Value: 3.75/5.0

A box that goes for under $70 and only promises one hit is not the most likely choice for good value. For many who break by the box, that value will generally be well below the cost. Still, the chance for something big is there and that potential can go a long way, especially since Heritage High Number is a cheaper product that still is more geared to set collectors. On-card autographs and rare parallels/variations still produce more value, and as long as collectors are realistic about their chances in pulling one of these, the risk is minimal.

The Fun Factor: 3.75/5.0

Most realize the key thing about Heritage is that it honors the past. I don’t collect vintage baseball nor was I alive in the 1960s. The 1966 design and limited image variety does not draw me in like other products. Still, I respect it for what it is and the thrill of the hunt searching for Gum Backs and variations was amusing even though I did not pull one. While my box ultimately did not yield anything of significance, knowing what could be there added more fun and it can be a nice to change of pace to revisit old designs featuring current players.

Are the Mini cards really 1:69 packs? Cause I’m looking at the odds on the back of a hobby wrapper and it states the Mini is 1:169. Just curious if that’s correct.

Trey Treutel

Rick The information I have shows the retail odds are 1:169 and the hobby odds are 1:69 packs.

I like the Heritage high numbers my big problem is that I bought 5 sealed blaster boxes of high numbers with sealed packes I got 4 to 5 high numer cards in each pack and the other 4 or 5 cards were from 2012 topps all commons or 2010 topps all commons. whats up with that I took the boxes back and my money was returned. I called Topps they said they were not responseable for tampered boxes from the warehouse. Sad when people stoop that low.

Great set for rookies and parallels to chase. But, so far, I have only hit a Francisco Lindor chrome /999. Plenty of base Correa’s. Then today, from a Walmart blaster box, I hit a triple relic (Cepeda, Yadi & Wainwright) hand-numbered to 25. One of the toughest hits I have ever pulled, at 1/6,777 packs.

The Wainwright jersey relic is light blue — anyone know from where it came (obviously not St. Louis game uniform colors)? Any help would be appreciated.

I have 1 card shop within a 200 mile radius from my home, but the owner mostly stocks up on football and basketball as baseball is the least popular of the 3 here in southern WV so what baseball hobby boxes he does get in, its usually the regular topps or bowman…so ive been forced to buy retail only…i have always liked the Heritage brand BUT i only bought prolly 3 retail boxes since 2011 cuz there usually isnt many big name rookies per set and its so hard to hit relic/auto/big name rookie sp/parallel…but the 2015 class is stacked esp the later series of topps products with all the later callups after the 1st edition topps sets were released…so becuz of that ive been buyin a lot of later 2015 boxes just to pull the base rookies of correa/Bryant/buxton/etc…and anything else id consider a bonus..so from heritage high number, all my purchases haven been of the retail kind and so far ive spent less than $100 and have pulled a kolten wong/orlando cespeds dual bat/jersey #/66, kris Bryant rookie bazooka mini (seems rare n would love to knw the print run!), 2 kris Bryant rookie SP’s, 5 correa rookies, russell, Kang, and buxton rookie SP’s, raisel iglesias rookie chrome /999 so far so i think ive done alright…very happy with the product and as much credit as id like to give topps for gettin a non heritage buyer to buy heritage, its more to do with the overload of top rookies than topps making it more appealing…so as long as my local walmarts and target keeps this in stock, ill be cleaning them out!..i collect for future investment and i think 10+ yrs down the road, my buying of the 2015 topps baseball mid-late year products will definately payoff if i keep pullomg correas and bryants out of every box lol!..ive been really lucky pulling kris Bryant cards…i bought a 2014 bowman blaster last yr at walmart, only one they had, and pulled a lucky redemption which turned out to be kris Bryant auto refractor /500!..so topps if you read this, keep stackin those retail boxes you send to WV!!!..anyways great product love it!….o yea, i didnt see anything about the bazooka minis as far as checklist and print run…i dont care bout checklist but if you have any ideal what the print run is even if its a he said she said estimate id love to know…from what ive seen from ebay, seems like it shoukd be 100 or less cuz ive not seen no more than a handful of each player at any given time on there..any helps is greatly appreciated!..keep up the good work!

The high number series imo is better than series 1. so far the packs I have purchase have no gum stains or white out markings on it. Don’t mind the getting the gimmicks cards, just eliminate all the gum stain & white out on card backs in future sets. I hope they continue with high number or series 2 heritage in the future.

So I bought 2 hobby boxes and got 2 relics of nobody very good. I did however get 3 Bryants 1 base sp 1 base chrome and 1 refractor /999. Also action variations of Rodon and Lindor.

I went to target and purchased a few of the 20 card rack packs and pulled a Machado relic AND A HANK AARON CLUBHOUSE AUTO RELIC /25 REDEMPTION!!

Granted it’s always the luck of the draw but I’ve seen many better hits from retail than hobby packs

Does anyone know or have a checklist for the purple refractors? cant seem to find it anywhere for the 2015 heritage high number set.

Avoid the retail boxes…4 boxes and ZERO cards that are SP’S(700-725).Wish I
lived near a hobby store.

In 2008, 2009 – the Cut off date for rookies for the Update set was end of August – all the September were for the next year (though Pablo Sandoval date a Heritage rookie update only 2008 card) – Now the cutoff appears to be June 15. I doubt we will see Sano and Schwarber in any 2015 set.

I REALLY like this set. It is absolutely loaded with top rookies, so even with only 1 hit per hobby box (and an 80% chance that hit will be a relic), there still are many chances for great parallels and variations of players like Kris Bryant, Carlos Correa, and/or Francisco Lindor, just to name a few. I am giving this product a 5-star review despite opening 8 hobby boxes and pulling not one auto. Because you know going in with this product that autos will be very tough, and the price point is very manageable given all of the great rookies in this set. I also know I had bad luck not getting any autos in 7 boxes. The auto checklist is terrific, however, so if you DO get an auto, you have almost a 50% chance of it being a very good name.

But in 8 boxes I pulled 9 Correa rookies, 4 Bryants (SPs), 8 Syndergaards, 7 Gallos, etc. These cards could be $20 a piece or more in 10 years, so it’s a great investment product in my opinion.

My best hit was a gold bat relic of Jose Abreu numbered to 99. I pulled a chrome refractor of Bryant. I had a purple refractor hot box that had a purple of Correa. I pulled action variations of Lindor, Correa, Buxton and Addison Russell.

Interestingly, I bought two blaster boxes from Target just to see how the distribution would differ and pulled a dual relic of Machado and Frank Robinson hand numbered to 66. Much better than any of my hits from 8 hobby boxes. No accounting for the luck involved in this hobby, but this is a very fun product for set building. The 4 insert sets are all either 10 cards or 15 cards so those are quite manageable to build as well. The key to this product, though, IMO, is the sheer volume of top rookies, which I think will make this a very valuable set 5-10 years down the road.

MJ, Good point I didn’t remember Schwarber & Sano’s debut but it feels like they have been around forever now. I kinda hope they didn’t make it for Update either and we can get them in 2016.

Eric P.
Eric P.

Huge bias alert – pulled Francisco Lindor and Jose Abreu red (redemption) autographs in two hobby boxes. Also pulled an Addision Russell (redemption) autograph in a blaster box.

Even besides the above, the set works. Clubhouse Connection is a nice new addition. Like that there should be an action variation in each hobby box. Slightly dislike that the gum damaged back is harder to pull.

Really looks like Topps went out of the way to make this a more compelling set. It worked. Got me to purchase the cards where I’ve passed in past years.

Patrick, I don’t think they were “holding back” some key rookies. I just think their go-to-press deadline was earlier than those players were promoted (and Topps’ license with MLB says they can’t issue a card until player X has appeared in the majors; they can’t just “anticipate”, lest there be another Alex Gordon mess). Correa is in the set and he was recalled June 8. Schwarber debuted June 16 and isn’t in the set. I think its fairly obvious that Topps’ deadline was somewhere between those two dates. There was never any chance of Bird or Severino being in the set as their debuts came in August. The release date for the flagship update is a little less than a month away. That tells me the deadline for that product was at least a few weeks later. So I think you might get Schwarber and Sano in that one. But Conforto, Bird and Severino still figure to not make it given the dates of their promotions.

I got my hands on this product early at Target. Nice quality look and feel. Thick card. I grew up in the 80s so I dig the paper look. Corners are consistently sharp unlike panini retail. This set is stacked with rookies which is my favorite thing to collect. The retro look is actually convincing and nice. Not really any stars in the base set as far as veterans (they’re in the low number sets obviously) but I enjoyed my packs for the rookies and inserts. It’s also nice to see players that play hard every night but don’t get a chance to be on cardboard as often. Favorite product of the year.

JD
JD

If there were any Padres collectors out there, I could imagine them being slightly miffed at having to chase 4 of the 25 SPs.

patrick
patrick

Most likely they are saving Bird, Severino, and Conforto(as well as Sano & Schwarber) for the early 2016 releases otherwise there will not be many hot rookies to chase. This set is loaded with top draws as it is(Bryant, Correa, Lindor, Buxton, and on and on). I love Heritage but typically only buy some retail and singles but I will be buying some hobby boxes of the high number.

how does this set miss bird severino and conforto really what’s up with that

**–don’t understand how topps can blow including conforto, bird and severino in this set. talk about missing the boat.

I thought for sure they’d get a Molitor managerial card in this set. I was wrong.
