User Rating:

Round two of the flagship NHL product, 2015-16 Upper Deck Series 2 Hockey picks up after the Series 1 release. Featuring the Young Guns rookie card for Jack Eichel, each hobby box promises one memorabilia card.

The 200-card base set is once again the precursor to the the famed Young Guns subset. The 50 base rookies come 1:4 packs and the checklist includes Noah Hanifin and Jake Virtanen in addition to Eichel. Parallels for the entire base set include familiar options like Exclusives (#/100), High Gloss (#/10) and Printing Plates (1/1).

Averaging four per box (1:6 packs), UD Canvas includes a mix of subjects. Featuring Connor McDavid, the UD Canvas Young Guns are a bit more rare at 1:48 packs. UD Portraits is a 50-card set that includes only rookie players and drops four per box (1:6 packs). Platinum Gold (#/99) and Platinum Blue (#/25) parallels present more rarity for the Portraits.

The popular Day with the Cup insert returns with tough odds of 1:2,500 packs. Offering the boldest design, Rookie Breakouts are limited to 100 copies and showcase a die-cut acetate design.

Featuring one per hobby box, collectors can find either Rookie Materials or UD Game Jersey relic cards. There are also Patch versions for both, with the Rookie Materials Patches limited to 25 copies and UD Game Patch cards numbered to 15. 1,000-Point Club Jerseys are another tough hit at 1:864 packs.

While more limited, several signed cards offer more hits for collectors. UD Signatures and O-Pee-Chee Signatures both surface at a rate of 1:576 packs. 1,000-Point Club Autographs Jerseys are among the rarest with a print run of only ten.

Enhancing several earlier set or inserts, Series 2 has few updates. O-Pee-Chee Update offers 50 new cards including 40 rookie options that fall 1:6 packs. Regular OPC Update cards average one per box. Rainbow Foil, Red Border and Black Border (#/100) parallels add to the totals. More options come in the form of O-Pee-Chee Retro Updates that fall 1:12 packs overall.

It is important to note that Upper Deck Series 2 will also be issued as part of the Upper Deck e-Pack platform. No additional cards will be produced but part of the overall run will be set aside for e-Pack. While the date is not set firmly, Upper Deck has stated that they intend to "provide our brick and mortar retailers with a window before e-Pack starts." The earliest release for S2 e-Pack is March 17, 2016.

Trey is a lifelong sports fanatic. He is a huge fan of the NBA and NFL, as well as soccer, college basketball and college football. As a kid, he collected football and basketball cards. In more recent years, he started collecting basketball cards again on a whim and has since expanded to other sports and entertainment options.

Somebody on the e-pack site claimed that Upper Deck kept the Series I to 20% of the production run. I did not inquire if that included the inserts, assumed they meant box/case distribution.

Additionally, it was pointed out that Upper Deck is charging more per box on their site (by me). Somebody stated that may be a strategy to help the retailers out, since their prices are lower and people should be going to them for product (or card shows). May be possible (don’t shoot the messenger).

If the 20% is true, then I don’t understand why card companies aren’t giving out production #’s of everything. If I go through another spell of the 1990’s where there were SO MANY Shaq Topps printed and devalued (like our American currency in QE these past few years), then I will stop purchasing completely and merely indicate to folks it’s totally useless to support any of the companies.

Who knows w/ licensing and Panini (foreign company) joining the market, what we may be in store in the future – hope for the best everyone, like my boss says at work… :)

Any details on the Goal Tribute cards? Checklist above shows a 600 goal card for Iginla, but epack checklist has a Goal Tribute checklist (vs 600 goal) with Iginla and Ovechkin (500 goals). Are these auto, memorabilia, or just plain insert?

Trey Treutel
Trey Treutel

Josh » Iginla is a basic insert. Have not seen anything for Ovechkin. Not everything extends across both physical and ePack formats.

Codey makes excellent point above. UD will have much higher profit margin on epack so it makes sense for them to load epack with more “hits” to push people in that direction. It might be subtle and unannounced but it most certainly will be the case.

With this recent e-pack feature, It has greatly affected my thirst to purchase wax. Upperdeck says the odds are still the same to pull the “rare” hits, which is only true if you purchase both epacks and physical packs. If one only purchases one type, the odds are highly affected. And not only are they affected but without any reference on how much. There are no numbers stating what the overall percentages of how much more wax boxes/packs/cases are over the epacks… or vise versa. It’s worse then when Upperdeck split hobby//retail. I buy the occasional card of favorite player on the secondary market, but wont be continuing to purchase cases/boxes/packs in the near future. Good luck with the breaks!

Does upper deck ever change designs. The last 3 years look the same. Upper deck has ruined hockey cards. It is to hard to collect rookie cards. They need to add 2 or 4 more young guns per box. Too many doubles and the canvas cards are a joke. Who wants a common player canvas card. The sportcard hobby is a disgrace anymore. Kids can not collect cards. Hobby boxes that are priced higher than 50 dollars should guarantee a 25$ plus card hit. I bought 3 series 2 2014/15 hockey boxes. I did get one hit over 10 dollars. No Gotisbehere,Nurse,Klingberg,Drouin,Horvat,Vashilevsky,or Gibson. Your kidding me upper deck I am no longer a fan of upper deck hockey cards. Buyers beware they floss Eichel’s name. 1 in every 1000 box might have one. They puposely under produce the stars so you can even pull a young gun double in same box. Upper deck ruined baseball card collecting now it will infect hockey cards.

As expected. Weaker YGs than series 1, but still a pretty solid product.

I agree as too many no names in the yg but opened 2 cases ,The first case was awesome ,pulled 3 Eickles(yg) and the McDavid canvas.I opened the 2nd case and was about what a normal case should be 1 Eickle, got 4 autos out of 2 cases as well as canvas progam of excellent but no rookie material McDavid.I agree with the rest of you about e-cards as bought so cause of bordom, pulled a McDavid YG but this is flooding the market because of greed and devaluating All good pulls. My son in law bought a tin at Wal-Mart and pulled an Eickel but in my opinion Eickles are easyer to pull than McD

Larry
Larry

Got some retail packs and a tin and I pulled some decent cards. Pavelski jersey card, a Koekkoek canvas POE card, Theodore YG, Domi portraits were the HL. But UD screwed me on the tin as many packs had 7 cards and not 8. Too many rookies I’ve never heard of or have barely played a game. The OPC inserts are pretty much worthless. The odds of getting an Eichel YG or mcdavid canvas must be astronomical or you’d have to buy a case or two…or 10. I enjoy collecting and pulling that great card is awesome but UD needs to get its act together.

Cheaper way to get Young Guns. I saw the tins and retail boxes at Toys r Us today. They were not in Walmart yet.

evan
evan

Me and my brother just got three tins straight from upper deck and we didn’t get a single jersey card! several cards were not cut properly, this upper deck stuff is just ridiculous, two of the tins had identical young guns! we did get a mcdavid o-pee-chee and panarin retro. but still three stars for me!

HH> the retail only just came out yesterday so i’m not sure that there would be any at walmart yet.

HH
HH

Thanks Trey. That’s what I thought.

Went looking for retail at 2 Walmarts yesterday and there wasn’t any on the shelves. There also wasn’t any room on the shelves as both stores were loaded with 30 to 40 boxes of Series 1 Parkhurst boxes and about the same amount of oversized YG’s boxes.

First time I have been in a Walmart since just after xmas. Wasn’t expecting to see that. They really do make a lot of this stuff.

Has anyone seen retail yet?

Jeff P
Jeff P

I am not so sure this is over-produced versus produced to order unlike last year Series 2 where the tough inserts were coming out in droves. The YG checklist is weak but that has often been a criticism of 2nd series releases. McDavid has raised the prices for product to be true but there is still a lot to like. Love? No – but like. My guess would be that at $10/box cheaper there wouldn’t be as much agita

Hi Trey,

What is the Mega Box? I’m guessing it is the Series 2 Walmart exclusive box like the Series 1 Parkhurst?

Thanks.

Trey Treutel
Trey Treutel

HH » I heard from UD and the Mega Box is an exclusive format found only at Walmart. Each box includes one three-card pack of the OPC Glossy Rookies.

Trey Treutel

HH » I have a question out to UD about it and will update if I hear anything back.

Kevin man, Trey just passed the info. I understand though where you’re coming from. UD is absolutely garbage this year. I know full well that this is lottery and I never complained about my specific pulls in a break. I’m talking about QC and customer services and overproduction. I’m talking about the fact that they take advantage of their customers because they are the only one there on the market. NHL should not accept monopoly on their products and they should always have at least two companies producing cards.

Mark, you’re not the only one there. I complained to UD because after I opened a case of Team Canada Juniors this year I was missing 18-19 of the base cards. Can you imagine that??!! I called them and they told me they will send me one copy of each of the missing cards. Like that will help! But guess what? Up to this day, I saw none of those cards.

So yes, I understand why people are getting frustrated…

Kevin C. >> I think the information was just passed on to you. This site is perfect for information on product, lists and surprises.
I agree that Upper Deck is now terrible at customer service. I just sent them a list of complaints about Trilogy. 2 weeks later I am still depressed on the product that I spent big bucks on. Looking forward to seeing the response.
Keep on going after Upper Deck and speak with your local dealer. This new epack thing is a slap in the face to the dealers selling cards.
We keep on buying and Upper Deck makes money, if more people start complaining maybe things will change since hockey is Upper Deck’s main product.
I did not notice any damaged cards in my 2 cases of series 2 but you should see Trilogy. The stickers with auto’s look like 3 year old kids placed them on. For a high end product, it is embarassing, but my bad I did not do more homework on Trilogy.
Trey Treutel >> I love this site and information. Lists are great and information is always right on. Too bad you were not running Upper Deck, lol.

Kevin C.
Kevin C.

Trey Treutel >> Seriously??? “Announcing it” is NO excuse. It should NOT have happened to begin with. The High Gloss cards are so valuable they should NEVER have had an error like that. That wasn’t picked up before or during production??? Give me a break. The defense of Upper Deck is just plain pathetic and sad. Error after error. AND there are also people with damaged cards straight out of the pack and UD told them too bad — not replacing them. Even with VIDEO evidence. UD already got their money, so screw the customer. In 5 years I’ll start collecting again. And NOT with Upper Deck!!!

Opened a second case today and did much better. 6 UD Canvas Young Guns, 2 UD Program of Excellence (Domi, Gaunce), 1 UD Portraits/99, 1 Acetate, 1 Retired UD Canvas, 1 Day with the Cup, 1 Young Guns High Gloss, 4 Ud Exclusives including 1 Young Guns/100, 1 Masterpieces auto (Johansen), three McDavid cards (opc-base, rainbow and UD Exclusives).
Still no McDavid UD Canvas. Out of the Overtime packs I did get a Rick Nash auto numbered out of 3. So that was cool.

Ed M.
Ed M.

Some observations after opening four hobby boxes today.

Love the distribution of Young Guns. Had an issue collecting the same guys over and over again in Series 1. Today, four boxes = 24 unique Young Guns.

Eichel/McDavid: One box contained an Eichel Rookie Materials, Portrait, and Young Gun cards. McDavid turned up on an OPC card in one box and a Canvas Young Guns checklist.

Each box had the standard jersey relic (including the Eichel), but also picked up a Kyle Turris Masterpieces Signature.

Completed two full base sets, with a third that’s pretty close.

Other notes:

1 Clearcut Superstar (McKinnon)
A Domi OPC Marquee Rookie
Portrait rookies of Galiev and Panarin.
2 UD Exclusives (Higgins & a Devils rookie I can neither spell nor pronounce), #’ed out of 100.
A Larkin OPC rookie.
3 Young Guns Canvas cards (including the McDavid checklist)
A Brendan Gaunce Program of Excellence Canvas.

Overall we are very pleased. Not sure I’ll chase the remaining Young Guns, may just try to find them in bulk at a show or on eBay. Happy with the Eichels after pulling two McDavid YGs in Series 1 out of one hobby box and four tins.

Been collecting Upper Deck for 2 years now. After a better outlook in 2014 product has dipped the past two years in a row. Don’t understand why Gudlevskis or Makarov weren’t included in the last couple of sets. Now they’re leaving out Meier, Nylander and Korpisalo out of this set just to name a few. Didn’t include Austin Watson?? This product is barely average. 20 really desirable cards, 6 or 7 I might consider. The rest just plain suck. WHAT THE HELL???

Jay
Jay

Collect the error cards, they are so over produced that in 2095 they might be worth something. Above comments are spot on. #UDJunk

Bad, bad, bad. From the poor checklist to the absolutely horrible quality control. And yes, they overproduced again. 1 star for me.

Oates
Oates

Why is Adam Oates included in the 1000 Point Club when is was included in the 1000 Point Club cards last year? Seems like a rather large mistake. At least they used a different photo.

They have a 5 years contract starting with 2014-15.

I opened 3 cases and had no McDavid Canvas.

I stand corrected on the unlabelled High Gloss. It was not Ryan Hartman, it was Brock McGinn of Carolina. The player wasn’t obviously the point, but I will correct the name of the player. At least I CORRECT my mistakes……

Kevin C. » Upper Deck did reveal right before release that the YG High Gloss callouts were missing but elected to include them so as to not delay the product.

What a joke !! Watched 3 cases being opened and 1 had no Eichel YG. 1 had 5 Mcdavids which is good but what about getting all the YG like years past. Just that makes me reluctant to even try a box. Will still buy 14-15 and earlier because those cases were well put together with all the young guns so you knew that by buying the case you would end up with a full set unlike 15-16. UD you have overstayed your welcome in hockey.

Kevin C.
Kevin C.

Again, the quality control at UD is down the toilet, just like in Black Diamond. FIRST day released, so far, a Ryan Hartman High Gloss Young GunS /10. They didn’t actually put “HIGH GLOSS” on the card. The best one….The “Program of Excellence” cards. Look nice right? Check out the card for Sam Bennett. IT HAS SAM REINHART PICTURED. Are you SERIOUS??? AGAIN??? What in the hell is wrong with UD?? They obviously DON’T know hockey….they only know the word “McDavid”. UD is SO screwed next year. And they deserve it. And Portrait after Portrait after Portrait….ENOUGH ALREADY!! If you get 5 Portraits of the same player in a case, MAYBE THERE ARE TOO MANY MADE!! Instead of using a little ingenuity and making a nice new design or anything, just fill the packs up with Portraits. It’s pathetic. And to all that say “don’t like it , don’t buy it”, no worries — I’m not buying ANY of this crap. I watched 2 hours of a break and saw enough of the stupidity. Until Panini comes back, UD can shove it where the sun don’t shine. YOU don’t care about your final product, I SURE as hell don’t care to buy it. I thought the Program of Excellence cards looked well made, but to put the WRONG PLAYER on it?? Inexcusable. GET IT TOGETHER UD FOR THE LOVE OF GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!

I do not think Upper Deck does care. They are making money because we are still buying. This epack thing is just a slap in the face to the Card Stores.

I am still depressed about my wasted money on the Trilogy garbage I purchased two weeks ago. I would of been better off spending this money on Upper Deck Series 2. It is loaded with rookie cards.

They say the ratio is the same but you only get three UD Exclusives per case and in my case no High Gloss. If you read up on Upper Deck, they actually did some shady things in the past and no longer have NFL, MLB or NBA. They are lucky to have the NHL and must of let many staff go with less product to make. This is probably why their customer service sucks these days.

Does anyone know how much longer they have the NHL contract.

We should start complaining to the card stores. It sucks for them too because Upper Deck keeps raising the price for boxes with less cards in them.

What is the ratio of McDavid UD Canvas cards per case? I had 6 UD Canvas Young guns in my case but did not get the McDavid.

10.000 would be great. Let’s think about this. We all agree that every case has in average at least once every rookie in the set. 50 rookies in the set, 48 young guns per case. Now, 10.000 cases I think were sold, opened or used in breaks in the Province of Quebec only, where I live. With this planned overproduction, my guess is the number are much, much more higher than that.

Mark M
Mark M

Same as every year, flagship product but nothing spectacular. Yes series 1 was loaded with more of the good rookies but that is hardly different from other years. Photography not as good as previous years, especially for canvas cards.

Can’t help but laugh at the comments above – of course upper deck is a for profit business that just wants to maximize profits. But judging by the comments above so are most of the people buying their cards. No “value”, can’t turn a profit, cards aren’t “worth as much”, etc. Cracking wax has always been a money losing proposition. If the value of the cards inside the box was more than the box itself UD, Panini, etc would just sell single cards now wouldn’t they.

Buy singles if you don’t like it or do us a favor and just leave this hobby you seem to hate so much.

john

hey upper deck, good luck in 16-17 you think Austin Mathews is going to generate this much hype, you guys are done, you ruined it in 15-16, next year you will starve and eventually lose the nhl license just like you lost every other sport…..

This product is and should be just average product and packs should be no more then $3.50 a pack. But the Mc David Bonanza has driven it to a cash cow for some. just like stock market sell high when every one is buying and make some good coin.
The best thing would be if Upper Deck would just number the Young Guns Rookies and you will all be surprised what the print runs are 10000 or more per card just like the 1990s. If these rookies carry a value say 20.00 should it not then be a short print rookie of 50 copies have 5 times the value. the less are printed the less can go around thus in the long run short printed cards where it be rookies or jerseys or autographs will have a greater value then cards printed to numbers to 10000 or more. I good example is the DONRUSS ELITE CARDS from the 1990s copies 10000 per card were selling for $50.00 plus back then why cause the hype and now you find on ebay for 5.00.

The planning for this product and structure is laughable. I bought one box and will not buy another. I finally am done giving UD any more money. The Series 1 Epack debacle (which has totally destroyed value) and how terrible SP Game Used was..and now this. Does anyone at Upper Deck care anymore? who is running the company these days? Is anyone listening??

There are acetate young guns on Ebay

HH

I didn’t hear about e-pack until recently as I was looking at some cards on eBay. I didn’t see any mention of it on release of Series 1. I think it was a new idea after mass producing S1 so much. They had to come up with an idea to sell all the cards!!

I don’t think it was listed under S1 on this site to be released on a certain date. But I could be wrong.

HH
HH

I don’t think this years S2 will bring the same hit ratio as previous years. With Eichel, Hanafin and McDavid Canvas they will mass produce S2. Will be interesting to see what people say. I won’t spend a dime on it, just buy what I want on eBay. A lot of people clearly have an in on getting product cheap. Or have a lot of spare change!

I just found out an E-pack is more proof that they mass produce they crap out of this crap! You can buy e-packs online and boxes and cases and have the hits mailed to you. And trade in so many hit cards for a rare card. It’s just greed, money, money, money. Must piss off the Hobby Shops. A month isn’t that long after release.

what the hell is an e pack?

Zach

On one hand epacks definitely takes away the trill of opening the cards. Also the shipping UD charges is outrageous. I paid 17 USD to Canada and selected rapid (one day) it came two and half weeks later. Also they sleeved every card and used two toploaders together in a team bag. I hit a McDavid and it wasn’t even toploaders. That’s straight bush league. I only did cause I hit the McDavid. The pros to epacks are that you can get a box for a decent price as on eBay they go for around 150-160 cnd dlvd. Also if you were one of the first to get foil cards and put them on eBay, then you could make some money on the secondary market. Also the impression and greatness cards could sell well on eBay if you were to have them up first. But at the end of the day I’d still like to have the physical card in my hand intstantly when I break the product that is in front of me.

‘I know I have looked at this page before but I do not remember seeing a notice about some of the product being held for e-pack. If they just put that notice there recently, and someone like me ordered a case of series two before the notice was placed, is that even legal? Wouldn’t it be false advertising? I know I do not believe in e-pack, they are not cards, they are just pictures on a computer to me. If the notice was there since we could pre order, I stand correct. I will be very disappointed if it’s true, I like collecting upper deck.

lck » We are not Upper Deck. I added that recently to this page as a courtesy to collectors who may not have been aware. Upper Deck originally announced the e-Pack format and the fact that Series 2 would be included during All-Star Weekend.

Price per box based on content is brutal.
Sets with YG’s on EBAY for 300-350 on pre-buys already make cases useless.
Chase cards YG exclusives and High Gloss will make up for not buying a case for me. EBAY here I come for my series 2…

wow, I agree Adrian, used to spend a lot on boxes, I cant believe how much money I wasted on upper deck cards, your right hockey is saving them so they are maximizing their profits, I noticed the guys working at the upper deck booth at the expo had this attitude like were all stupid and crazy for opening so much product rather than thanking us that they have a job. iam completely turned off as well and will continue to just buy pc cards online rather than opening boxes

adrian
adrian

terrible!, mass produced money grab, everyone at upper deck should be fired, CANADIANS NEED TO WAKE UP AND REALIZE THAT UPPER DECK IS DROWNING WITH NO LICENSES WITH MLB,NFL & NBA AND THEY ARE JUST TOTALLY WATERING DOWN ALL THE HOCKEY PRODUCTS AND MASS PRODUCING THEM, OPEN YOUR EYES AND TAKE A STAND, DONT CRACK BOXES, LET GROUP BREAKERS OPEN THEM AND PURCHASE THEM ON THE SECONDARY MARKET….SAVE YOUR MONEY, THEY ARE LAUGHING AT US

What is there more to say? The checklist looks horrible. They should have thought to equilibrate it a bit. They put all the cream in the Series 1 and now we are left with a lot of unknown players. The portraits, the jerseys and the OPC update save it a bit, but it’s still a 2 stars product for me, for the moment.

Andrew
Andrew

How about this for a prediction, I bet upperdeck will put all the young guns and all the pretrade or trade deadline players in another subset of 100 cards that will be put into another product. Just like last year. What do you think Rick.

I’m from Pittsburgh so not happy with the fact there are no Penguins in the Young Guns. There were at least 3 if not more rookies they could have chosen from. Also several new Penguins that didn’t get a card in this series.

Evan
Evan

Upper Deck really did not give a s*** who they picked to go into the young gun set for series 2.

Andrew
Andrew

Who picked the Young Guns for Series 2? Could they have checked who would be a rookie this year, instead of picking nobodies who play one or two games and get shelved for the rest of the season. Arizona has more than just Domi! Martinook? Dahlbec? And how about Edmonton there are at least 2 more players that have more games than the player that they picked. There are also 5 teams without young guns in series 2! I am pretty sure they could have carried over at least one Calgary player. Is not Rust a rookie for Pittsburgh? Let’s just say I am very disappointed and so are my three sons. We as a whole, will not spend another dime on upper deck this year.

I am always a fan of S2. Always brings better value rather than series 1. The e-pack thing is a big joke. Shows you how much upper deck really cares about the well being of the hobby, as well as how overproduced S1 is.

I’m thinking of boycotting this product because of epack. People have been getting way better hits and more frequency on epack than I got in 10 cases of series 1 I tell u. The greed is ridiculous.

and lets not forget when buying Hobby boxes they will be holding back cards again to put towards their e-packs!!! So we all know when the distributors say its sold out and raise the prices the following weeks. Its a lie!!!

Edwin – Upper Deck has not announced the inclusion of the Acetate Young Guns in previous recent releases, making them an unannounced “surprise” for the products they are included in. I would expect them to continue that this year.

I’m looking forward to seeing the checklist this year’s Series 2. I expect it will be, to no one’s surprise, heavy on McDavid, Eichel, Domi, Ehlers, et al.
