User Rating:

2014 Topps Stadium Club Baseball marks the third go around for the photo-centric brand. Last seen in 2008 as a high-end, hit-per-pack product, it has been revamped once again. While not an entry-level set, it’s not super pricey either. Every box comes with three autographs.

The hobby-only product comes with a mini box configuration. Each master box has 18 packs divided equally between three mini boxes.

The 2014 Topps Stadium Club Baseball base set has 200 cards. The trademark full-bleed design returns to showcase photography. Parallels come in five levels: Rainbow Foil (one per mini box), Gold Foil (one per master box), Electric Foil, Foilboard (#/25) and Members Only (one per case).

Autographs come to fall one per mini box. Base Autographs have the same basic design as the main set. The checklist has over 50 players and all are signed on-card. Parallels include Rainbow Foil (#/50), Gold Foil (#/25) and Electric Foil (1/1).

Premium autograph sets feature some familiar names from Stadium Club’s past. Lone Star Signatures highlights ten top players. They come with both Gold Foil (#/10) and one-of-one Electric Foil parallels. Co-Signers return with a pair of autographs. With ten cards in the set and just five copies each, these are tough to find. Both Lone Star Signatures and Co-Signers come with on-card signatures.

Basic inserts in 2014 Topps Stadium Club Baseball are a mix of new and old. Back from the brand’s early days is Beam Team (25 cards, 1:3 mini boxes). Triumvirates are another returning name from the past. The die-cut cards can be put together to form a three-card puzzle. The complete set has 30 cards. All come in three versions: Luminous (1:3 mini boxes), Luminescent (1:4 master boxes) and Illuminator (one per case).

Ten retired players are highlighted in Legends Die-Cuts (1:3 mini boxes). The same approach is given to young players in Future Stars Die-Cuts. Both of these sets have Gold Foil versions numbered to 25. Field Access (25 cards, one per mini box) continues with the photography theme, delivering shots that haven’t been seen before. Parallels here include Rainbow Foil (#/99), Gold Foil (#/50) and Electric Foil (#/25).

Product Configuration: 18 packs per box, 5 cards per pack

2014 Topps Stadium Club Baseball Product Review

Reviewed by Ryan Cracknell

Good: Best overall photography for a baseball set in years, simple checklist, fun inserts, on-card autographs.

Bad: Thin card stock, weak autograph checklist, boring parallels.

The Bottom Line: 2014 Topps Stadium Club Baseball is a beautiful set. But for fans of the returning brand, there are some small things that make the set feel confused over what it wants to be. Thankfully, the foundation of the brand’s strengths remain and there are solutions to the biggest issues that should, hopefully, help it find its way again.

Staff Rating:
3.3 / 5.0

Card Design: 4.3/5.0

Even on the Stadium Club scale, the base set look is phenomenal. There are tons of great shots, but posed and in action. The full-bleed design is about as simple as it gets, but that’s the whole point. This is a set that revolves around the photo. While there’s a need for a nameplate and identity, it’s rightfully kept to a minimum.

However, there’s a big disappointment when you go to hold the cards. They’re very thin. When Stadium Club debuted, a major selling point was that they were printed in partnership with Kodak. Yes, Kodak isn’t what it used to be, but there are still plenty of solid card stocks that would have worked. While the cards look great, they feel cheap.

The parallels are another missed opportunity. Without any borders, the slight change in foil is barely noticeable. Stadium Club First Day Issue cards were one of the hobby’s early big-time parallels. This could have been an easy solution and a more exciting card even if it meant a disclaimer on wrappers that the cards may not have been printed on any specific date.

The full-bleed design bodes well for the autographs, all of which are done on card.

Most of the basic inserts look great too, particularly the photos on Field Access and the modern nostalgia of both Beam Team and the Triumverates, which are probably my favorite die-cut cards of the year.

Checklist: 3.5/5.0

Outside of the autographs, the checklist is excellent. Unfortunately, it’s structured where the signed cards are intended to be a major selling point. It has the quantity but the quality is poor from a name standpoint. Two of the three that I pulled insinuated in their write-ups on the back that the players were almost lucky to be on an MLB roster. That’s not very reassuring.

I’ve heard of several case breaks with collation issues with lots of duplicate autographs. If you’re going with a box or two, this likely won’t be a problem but it is something to consider if you’re looking at group breaks.

However, as a fan of old-school Stadium Club, the autographs don’t interest me a lot. It’s about the base set and the other parts, which are great. At 200 cards, it’s a set that centers on stars and rookies. There’s a nice mix of retired players as well.

Inserts are structured nicely where there’s both quality and appropriate quantity.

My big hope here for next year is that the autograph quantity is cut so the resources can be put into getting better signers as well as better card stock.

Value: 2.0/5.0

It’s tough to justify the initial cost of 2014 Topps Stadium Club Baseball. While there’s a decent amount of autographs, the vast majority are very weak. Combine that with the flimsy card stock and you’ve got a set that is a hard sell. Prices are already slipping, which should make it more reasonable. The mini box format with a promised autograph could make it similar to a retail blaster box cost and content wise.

The Fun Factor: 3.5/5.0

While disappointed in some regards, this is a set that is going to look great once I complete it and get it in a binder. It’s those images that have made me a fan of Stadium Club for so many years. And that’s what it should be about. The base inserts are a lot of fun and look great as well. This is a brand I definitely want to see return in 2015 and find its identity again. It might not be for everyone, but I think there’s a place for a product that looks great and isn’t all about hits.

Jeez, a lot of these reviewers sound like the really old lady in the cereal aisle b**tching that the grocery store is out of their ONE AND ONLY brand of cereal! When the grocery store has 578 other brands and types of cereals to choose from!

Rated 4.5. Absolutely the best player photo shots I have seen on card sets since the 1998-2000 Fleer Ultra sets period! Nice “easy”set for set and insert collectors with the Triumverates looking fantastic. Also like the nice mix-in of vintage players on B&W photos. Best looking card in the set is the Gattis card with the pelt over his shoulder. Nice job Topps!

I got 3 mini boxes for Christmas and love this product. The photography is great. I hate head shots of baseball players. Also, I pulled a Mike Trout /25 auto redemption! Any idea what that goes for?

I enjoyed the hell out of this box I bought. I spent 59 (well actually I spent 40 and my bro 19 and I gave him one of the mini’s). He pulled an Albert Belle card. Amazing. Then Canseco. I pulled an Abreu rookie, Ernie Banks, Stan Musial, Rickey Henderson… really nice photography. The auto’s were Wong, Chase Anderson and Jake Marisnick, which was a little disappointing. But made up for with a Maddux legends card and a Puig insert. I like these and will buy more.

I won 2 mini boxes from a Razz. Thank goodness I only spent $10. I feel sorry for the guys that paid full price for these. The same dang auto card, no die-cut, or parallel….REALLY!!!!!! The best card out of the boxes was {1} Abreu *RC*. His base card is worth more than my auto. Notice I said auto, not autos. I Think I will spend my money on a better product next time….PANINI!!!!!

I’ve never received so many duplicate autographs in a case. I wouldn’t be complaining if they were great players I suppose – but in a case (36 autos) – I have 12 duplicates (including 4 of one player and 3 of 2 others), all $1 cards. Very few numbered cards. The ultra-rare illuminators aren’t even numbered, though they are 1 per case, and they are the ugliest version of the card.

Fool me once…

I purchased 9 master boxes from various sellers when the cards were initially released- I also experienced several instances of the exact same cards and autos appearing in different boxes. There is very little difference between the base cards and parallels. I expect more out of a special card than just a different color nameplate background… I do love the signed card in each mini box, but with the collation problems, about half my autos are of the same 3 or 4 players (Owings, Montero, Adams, Wong). One Trout card out of 9 master boxes…about 25 Kershaws…really? Overall, I’m disappointed.

I guess you can’t satisfy anyone with anything. The Prices for these cards in my opinion are right on. Not too high and not too low. Actually, for all the autos to be on card, the price is great, even with a lot of “no name” guys. Everybody seems like they want big name autos all the time but with the production low and the prices reasonable. That is not how economics and business works people. The cards look great! They have amazing photos, especially of the old time ball players. The auto’s are also very good. The inserts are very nice as well. You can’t go wrong with a $70-80 product that has 3 on card autos in a box plus the great photography. It is just a very good value for your money.

Broke a box of it last night and was very disappointed. Autos were Starling Marte, Junior Lake and Adam Eaton /50. At this price point I think you should get more than one card that is /50. Does anyone know if there are photo variations in this, or just the members only variations?

Worst product on the market in my opinion. Bought into a full case break and saw one numbered card and a bunch of lame autos. Extremely disappointed

Opened 4 boxes was able to build the base set but had autos that were doubles and even in one pack had three cards of the same player in it. Sorry collation on topps part think the photography is good but for the price I’m not impressed! Price should be 50-60 dollars a Box in my opinion!!!

I was really looking forward to these i must say.

And sure, they’re a really nice card. But my initial reaction was that these should be the STANDARD topps set. Not the $100 for 90 cards set.

They’re a little underwhelming if you take into account the price i think.

And as for the sorting, i ran into the same problems. Out of 1 master box, i pulled 3 of the same auto’s as a break i watched on youtube. With mostly the same commons and inserts as well

Make this base set 400 cards strong, $50 bucks a box, with twice as many cards, and you’ve got me feeling like its 1994 and thats a good thing in my eyes…

Fact of the matter is that I had very high hopes for this product because I vividly remember opening packs of it as a kid and being blown away at how much better the cards were than other cards of the time.

I opened a mini-box of this product and was less than excited. While the full bleed photography was still in play, the old cards used to feel like you were actually purchasing photographs. These feel like they’re trying to rebrand Topps Prime football as a baseball set. (but they don’t even feel as “nice” as Topps Prime have in the past, too)…

To add to the “fun”, of course, I got a redemption auto. A redemption for a Chris Owings Auto.

Yippee… An redemption I’ll have to wait forever on for a guy who may or may not end up platooning with Didi Gregorius for the entirety of his career…

I wasn’t TOTALLY disappointed with the cards, but I do think I’ll be spending my future money elsewhere.

I was looking forward to this product until I watched a case break last night. The first six boxes literally had the same auto’s as the last six boxes. Very unexciting break. A decent price point and the autos are all on card. Still can’t bring myself to give them 3 stars. My guess is boxes will be down to the $60-65 range withing a few weeks.

I agree that there is a problem with the collation. Literally had the exact same cards come out of more than one pack in multiple boxes on a set break. That being said, the cards look amazing and for the price and number of autos, which I am especially interested in, it’s a very good product. I only give it 3 stars because of the number of repeated cards I saw on my break – shuffle the deck Topps!

I was involved in 2 case breaks today. Auto collation was terrible. Although there are lots of players on checklist, it makes me think that they must have “groups” of autos where some are more scarce than others. So many Mariners. 6 on checklist. lots of Mariner dupe autos. Padres and Twins not represented on auto checklists. Be very wary of group breaks. Lots of hitless teams in 2 cases. The good? All autos are on-card. No stickers.

Incredible checklist. .love the stars of yesterday being included in base. Also love the co – signers lineup. This product will break me..

Been waiting for this one a while. Already pre-ordered 3 boxes. Have always enjoyed their design and photography. This one sounds like a winner at a reasonable price

Thanks for the checklist! This site and the show continues to be the place for the most up to date information!

Nice checklist. Looking forward to busting a case of Stadium Club. My first in 4 years.

Are these going to be hobby only or in Target and Walmart too?
