2014 Topps Pro Debut Baseball puts a minor league spin on the main Topps set. Hobby boxes come with two autographs, a manufactured patch card and an additional memorabilia card.

The base set uses the same design as 2014 Topps Baseball, its MLB counterpart. The checklist includes 220 players, all shown in their minor league uniforms. Parallels include Gold (#/50), Silver (#/25), Printing Plates and Red (1/1). Variations that have different photos are also randomly inserted.

Pro Debut Autographs once again use stickers. Besides basic versions, there are also parallels that have different colored borders: Gold (#/50), Silver (#/25), and Red (1/1). Autographed Printing Plates are also included. Side by Side Autographs have signatures from a pair of prospects.

Manufactured patch cards in 2014 Topps Pro Debut Baseball fall in line with the 2013 release. Hat Logo Patch cards highlight the fun logos minor league teams use. Besides base versions, there are Gold (#/50), Red (1/1) and Printing Plate parallels. Mascot Patch cards take images of the furry ambassadors and convert them to embroidered patches that are embedded into the card. Base versions are numbered to 99 while Gold and Red parallels are limited to 50 copies and 1 copy respectively.

Debut Duds do not highlight failed prospects. Rather, these feature a game-used jersey swatch. In addition to Gold (#/50) and Silver (#/25) parallels, there are Jumbo Patch versions that are numbered to 5.

2014 Topps Pro Debut Baseball Product Review

Reviewed by Ryan Cracknell

Good: Nice design, patch inserts are fun, simple structure.

Bad: Several top prospects missing, lackluster autograph checklist.

The Bottom Line: 2014 Topps Pro Debut is, essentially, a minor league spin on the flagship set. While many of the elements are the same, Pro Debut does a solid job of carving out an identity of its own. The composition is much more simple and the manufactured patch cards are a lot of fun. However, for a minor league set to have wide appeal, it needs to have all of the top prospects. Unfortunately, this set is missing some major names even casual prospectors will notice.

Staff Rating:
3.5 / 5.0

Card Design: 4.0/5.0

The comparison to flagship starts with the base set design. Save for the different logos, it’s the same. And there’s nothing wrong with that. On its own, I like this year’s look a lot. And with Pro Debut not have the same history as its MLB counterpart, the lack of a big change in recent years isn’t as big a deal here.

Outside of the base set, there aren’t many other designs. Autographs are basically parallels. Because they’re stickers, these are a disappointment. Regular Relics are solid, even if it’s tough to get excited about them. The manufactured patch sets emphasize fun. I prefer the hat logos over the mascots, but both are definitely solid.

Checklist: 2.5/5.0

The 2014 Topps Pro Debut would have been much more exciting if the set were released last year. Byron Buxton and Clint Frazier are okay, but they were all over products last year. Kris Bryant, George Springer, Miguel Sano, Javier Baez and Oscar Taveras are all MIA in the base set though. Whatever the reason, these leave a significant gap in a product that’s intended to be a low-cost Bowman alternative to showcasing baseball’s future.

For those who collect autographs, this set is probably a skip. Not only are they stickers, but there are only a couple of players worth getting excited about.

Value: 3.6/5.0

Given how affordable Pro Debut is, there isn’t a huge risk with this product. You might not make much money if reselling is your thing, but if you’re looking to collect the set, it’s tough to get worked up about. Granted, you’re not likely to find a signature of much real significance.

But the print runs seem to be quite low. Most of the inserts and parallels are numbered to 50 or less and you should get a few per box.

The Fun Factor: 3.8/5.0

I have a soft spot for affordable products where most of the elements are attainable. Pro Debut is simple and doesn’t have a lot of frills. It might not have a lot of excitement in the “big card” department, but it offers something for prospectors who want something toned down. It’s probably best taken as Bowman Light, which some would consider a compliment.

Rating is a 3. Set is incomplete.
Missing card number 65 and card

Not one Marlins prospect in the entire set?

Robert
Robert

Set is numbered 1-222 even though there are only 220 cards (missing #65 and #183)
Also noticed that Buxton #1 front of card says his position is a pitcher. I assume that will go uncorrected.
Overall.. not that great of a set, possibly rushed out the door to meet release date deadlines? Expected more top prospects. Correa, Buxton, Appel, Polanco and Frazier are main attractions.

I like it. I got a 1/1auto on my first try.

are these coming out in retail?

The lack of top prospects in the base set is certainly baffling. I’m not surprised that Taveras isn’t there since he was in the 2013 set for Memphis and Pro Debut uses AAA players sparingly. Taveras (along with Bradley, Taijuan, etc) are bubble players and have seemingly “graduated” from this set. Sano is sitting out the year with injury, so OK. The omissions of Bryant, Baez, Lindor, and Russell make zero sense. Licensing issues?

I’m pleased with the manu logo patch card list, and this is my favorite ProD insert. The autos and relics are typical ProD. The mascots are a huge disappointment. They are retreading the same photos/mascots as last year but with a different background. Weak.

Despite the flaws here, I’m seriously looking forward to tearing into my pre-ordred hobby box when it arrives.

Where is Taveras and Kris Bryant?!!

Auto checklist looks pretty weak. But, variations and Hat Logo Patches look strong.

In my opinion it is an uninspired checklist. No Kris Bryant? Seems to be missing a lot of top prospects. And the autograph checklist is weak too, besides Frazier.

Eddie
Eddie

Anyone have a heads up on the players who will be in this set? Wondering about Odrismer Despaigne, Abreu, Betts & maybe Russell Wilson.
