Product Details
2014 Topps Chrome MLS marks the first time that MLS fans will be able to collect Chrome versions of their favorite soccer players. Each Chrome-filled Hobby box promises three autographs and a bevy of Refractors..
Carrying on the theme from 2014 Topps MLS, the main base set includes players in the MLS and an additional subset features members of the Mexican National Team. From there, a variety of familiar Refractors add to the Chrome chase. Several base Refractors (1:3 packs) and X-fractors (1:6 packs) drop in each Hobby box, and numbered Refractors bring additional rarity. This includes Blue Refractors (#/99), Gold Refractors (#/50), Red Refractors (#/25), and Hobby-only Atomic Refractors (#/10), Superfractors (1/1), and Printing Plates (1/1).
MLS Autographs cover some of the top MLS players and also include Blue Refractors (#/99), Gold Refractors (#/50), Red Refractors (#/25), as well as Hobby-only Atomic Refractors (#/10), Superfractors (1/1), and Printing Plates (1/1).
Rounding out the product, inserts offer collectors several themes. In Form Die-Cuts highlight the best players in the league. Additionally, 1976-77 Topps Footballers Mini provide a retro look and One-Two Die-Cut cards pair two star players on the same card. All three inserts have autographed versions, numbered to 25, and Refractor parallels, including Blue Refractors (#/99), Gold Refractors (#/50), Red Refractors (#/25), and Hobby-only Atomic Refractors (#/10), Superfractors (1/1), and Printing Plates (1/1).

Product Review
2014 Topps Football Product Review
Reviewed by Trey Treutel
Good: First Chrome MLS cards, large group of signers, solid number of Refractors per box.
Bad: No autographs for New York or Los Angeles, no rookies, not a lot of depth to autograph checklist, sticker autographs, more Mexican Team cards.
The Bottom Line: Given that 2014 Topps Chrome MLS is basically a chromium parallel of 2014 Topps MLS, it is hard to expect fundamental changes. On the plus side, the autograph checklist increased by a good amount and includes some popular new names. On the other hand, many of the deficiencies in 2014 Topps MLS remain and are furthered by a complete autograph omission of two huge MLS franchises. Regardless, three autographs and a Chrome product for $60-65 per box is not a bad option.
Card Design: 3.0/5.0
With Chrome MLS, if you liked the 2014 Topps MLS design or are a big fan of Chrome, then you will like the look of the base cards. I personally like the design better on Chrome as it gives the paint streak a more distinct look. The images do not carry over from the base Topps MLS set, so even the Chrome base cards have an added feel of newness. The Refractors are nothing new but the guaranteed color is never a bad thing and all versions are easy to spot. Although they drop several per box, the X-Fractors present a fun design.
The 1976-77 Footballers is the only insert to transition over to Chrome from the base product, albeit in a mini form, and Topps made the correct call. These cards were already clean and appealing and the Chrome finish takes that to another level. All the other inserts are Refractors as well, but do not offer much. The In-Form insert might have been a better design choice for the base set.
Since there are no memorabilia cards in the product, more expectation falls on the autographs. Sticker autographs are always going to be a letdown for a vast majority of collectors, and that is how it feels here, especially since they are the only hits.
Checklist: 3.5/5.0
At 95 cards, the base checklist is manageable and covers most of the bigger names in the league, but will still take at least two boxes to complete. The Mexican National Team subset adds five cards, bringing the total to 100. I still don't understand this from a MLS collecting perspective, but given their inclusion in the 2014 Topps MLS, it is no shock to see them again. A subset for the USMNT would have made so much more sense, but there are licensing issues.
The most noticeable thing about the checklist comes from the autograph subjects. The primary autograph set features a group of 60 players, including some top players like Clint Dempsey, Graham Zusi, Julio Cesar, Jermain Defoe, Kyle Beckerman, Michael Bradley and Obafemi Martins. The depth is not great, but there are a lot more options available. However, this is not true if you are looking for cards from two of the most popular MLS teams, the LA Galaxy and NY Red Bulls. Both teams were curiously omitted from the autograph checklist.
Value: 3.5/5.0
While there is still room for the the box price to drop, 2014 Topps Chrome MLS seems to provide adequate value. Refractors will always carry some interest and while several of the autographs are $1 cards, there are many autograph subjects that command a decent price. MLS is still a niche collecting market, but with the smaller print run and guaranteed hits in Chrome, the risk is not really as high as other products. Obviously the potential reward is not as great either, but there will be a ceiling on MLS products for the foreseeable future.
The Fun Factor: 4.0/5.0
I have always liked Chrome, so that obviously has an effect on my opinion, but 2014 Topps Chrome MLS was easily one of the most fun boxes to open among any MLS products I can recall. There are really no huge hits, but if you enjoy the MLS, it is hard to come away very disappointed given the price point and all that a box contains. Clearly Topps needs to get rookie players back in the product next year, but Topps Chrome MLS is a great new addition for soccer collectors.

I really enjoy this product and was fortunate to find 4 blaster boxes at target on Saturday. Picked up a one-two autograph which is a beautiful card. Wish it was a bigger set as it’s kind of bad as a fan of a particular team to only have a few players from each team to collect. Love the look, very sturdy cards. Will be buying more.
