Chromium stock, rookies and autographs converge once again for 2014 Topps Chrome Baseball. The product stays true to the configuration of the past few years with a pair of autographs in every hobby box.

The 220-card 2014 Topps Chrome Baseball base set is a shiny take on the flagship Topps set. The checklist includes a mix of rookies and veterans found in 2014 Topps Series 1 and Series 2. As always, parallel Refractors are one of the chase cornerstones. Besides basic Refractors, randomly inserted in hobby packs are X-Fractors, Blue Refractors (#/199), Black Refractors (#/100), Sepia Refractors (#/75), Gold Refractors (#/50), Red Refractors (#/25), Atomic Refractors (#/10), Printing Plates and SuperFractors (1/1). Variation Short Prints featuring different photos are also randomly inserted.

The majority of autographs in 2014 Topps Chrome Baseball are Autographed Rookie Card Variations. These have regular versions and several levels of numbered Refractors. These range from regular Refractors that are limited to 499 all the way down to one-of-one Superfractors. Silver and Black Refractors (#/25) come with a black frame and are signed in silver ink.

The product has a few other sets of signed cards. Topps of the Class Autographs (#/25) highlight key 2014 rookies. Hobby-exclusive Back-to-Back Die-Cut Autographs (#/5) are double-sided cards that are signed on both sides by two different players. Autographed Chrome Buybacks (#/10) are signed versions of old Topps Chrome cards. Other signed cards include Dual Autographs (#/10), Triple Autographs (#/5) and Auto Relic Patch Base Card Variations (#/10).

2014 Topps Chrome Baseball isn't short on basic inserts either. Topps All-Time Rookies give some of the company's most iconic rookie cards a chromium twist. Topps Shelf use a stylized filter on the images giving them a look that's similar to Gypsy Queen. These come with autographed (#/25 or less) and Superfractor (1/1) parallels. 1989 Topps Chrome brings back the bubbly 25-year-old design. Signed versions are numbered to 25. Chrome Connections Die-Cuts can be put together like a puzzle. These also have autographed and relic parallels, both of which are numbered to 25 or less.

Randomly inserted in hobby packs are redemptions good for uncut sheets of 2014 Topps Chrome Baseball cards.

2014 Topps Chrome Baseball jumbo boxes come with 12 packs of 13 cards. Each box has five autographs instead of the two promised in regular hobby boxes. Jumbo boxes also have four exclusive 1989 Topps Chrome inserts.

Good: Base Topps design transfers nicely to Chrome, Topps Shelf is one of the best basic inserts of the year, on-card autographs.

Bad: More rookie reprints, weak autograph checklist.

The Bottom Line: 2014 Topps Chrome Baseball is an attractive set, albeit one that’s not likely to create a lot of excitement. It’s the kind of product that has elements that can be fun to build, most likely as a side project. Following Topps flagship and Topps Mini, it’s the third release to carry the same design and photos so the majority isn’t new. Plus there are a couple of inserts that use recycled designs. To top it off, with a few rare exceptions, the autographs are largely weak. All that said, despite a lack of freshness, everything in the set does look nice. The Chrome works as an upgrade over the main set. The autographs are also on-card. So if you’re a fan of nice cards over big hits, this is a very solid release.

Staff Rating:
3.5 / 5.0

Card Design: 4.2/5.0

This set is slick. Sure, if you’ve bought base Topps (or Topps Mini), the base set photos look familiar. That’s been the way Topps Chrome has been since it debuted back in 1996. So unless you’re new to the brand, it’s a moot point. The addition of chromium adds a pop. In order for that to work, there also needs to be bright colors. They’re here too. The icing, which may seem silly to some, is the etching that outlines the player and border. This finishing touch is similar to using a black marker to trace the outside of a picture before you color it in. It holds things together.

Of course, what would Topps Chrome be without Refractors? There’s no shortage, all bringing that familiar shine and color. While there are lots, it doesn’t feel overwhelming like Bowman did earlier in the season.

But where 2014 Topps Chrome Baseball stands out the most is with the base inserts. Topps Shelf is one of may favorite inserts of the year. It may use a basic HDR filter for the player photos, similar to what was used in Bowman Inception, isn’t what makes it stand out. It’s the way the background, fonts and chromium all work together with the image. The result is a snazzy bit of modern Art Deco.

It was a little disappointing to see Rookie Reprints in yet another set. For nearly two decades, old cards and designs have been used a lot. I wish we could focus more on making new cards iconic rather than relying so much on the past. That being said, the 1989-inspired cards do look pretty good with the Refractor treatment. I’m definitely glad they opted not to use the die-cut edges like they did with the flagship set.

Checklist: 3.2/5.0

2014 Topps Chrome Baseball has a nice balance to it. At the same time, it’s not spectacular. For those buying the product strictly for the autographs, you’re likely to be disappointed. Outside of the very rare inserts and a couple of exceptions, there isn’t much that’s exciting. But with that being a major selling point, it’s hard to overlook.

But the base set and the basic inserts do a good job of mixing things up. Given that you don’t get a ton of base cards in a box, the base set is a nice size. The checklist includes a lot of the major rookies. The smaller size also limits the lesser veterans.

There is still a lot of color to chase, but as mentioned, the parallel palette isn’t as daunting as it feels in other sets. From a set composition standpoint, they’re a nice compliment to the overall product.

Topps Shelf and Chrome Connections Die-Cuts round things out. Often, I toss basic inserts aside because they feel like a way to make a checklist bigger. Topps Chrome takes a less is more approach this time around and I like it.

Value: 2.7/5.0

While far from the priciest break out there, there isn’t much in 2014 Topps Chrome Baseball that’s going to give a huge monetary return. Even Jose Abreu autographs are slowing down as the number of options for his signature continues to grow. This is where the overall weakness of the Rookie Autographs checklist really shows. It’s also a sign of the cycle that’s been created over the years with early Bowman autographs. The result on the back end is that most rookies have several signed cards that trump just about everything that comes during their rookie season when excitement is the highest.

This is a product where getting a few packs here and there or maybe a box or two will work best. Because it’s a fun set and not overly expensive, those not focused on resale should be fine. If you’re looking at strictly making money, busting cases is likely a losing proposition.

The Fun Factor: 4.0/5.0

Not being a massive high-end hit chaser, I appreciate 2014 Topps Chrome Baseball for what it is. I’ve flipped through the cards multiple times, admiring their simple beauty. I’m also targeting some of the inserts to build a set of, something I rarely do unless my attention is captured. Just because this set doesn’t have a lot of cards many would deem “hot,” doesn’t mean it’s not worth your attention, particularly if you skipped flagship Topps and the base set has a fresh feel for you.

Just wanted to say that I did not buy any of this product until this past weekend when I found a Value Box at Target on clearance for $12.99, and figured I’d take a chance and see what I could pull in the 7 packs (plus one 4 card purple refractor bonus pack). After the first few packs, I was thinking this is typical Chrome, pretty cards, but only 4 per pack, never get hits, same old same old, but then magic happened in my 4th and 6th packs.
In pack #4, a Top Shelf AUTO card numbered out of 25 of Bryce Harper was pulled
In pack #6, a RED RC Refractor numbered out of 25 of Kolten Wong was pulled

Now, I am hooked, and scouring Targets, Wal-Marts, and Toys’R’Us’s, for Value Boxes.

What a great product :)

Ok product but way over produced. Last year there would be two colored refractors a box but this year only one and it’s usually a blue. Also some cards have horrible centering. Recently bought a jumbo box and I’m hoping I will get an Abreu.

Pulled an 8/10 Xander Bogaerts signatured variation after spending only $10. Love those atomic refractors B)

Really disappointed in Topps lately. It almost appears deliberate that they did not include a SF Giants rookie card. The giants had 4 rookies contribute to their WS, including a starting 2nd baseman that hit .300! Yet not one RC designation in 2014 or 2015 (Susac, Panik, Duffy, and Strickland)

Moneil P. Not sure about the others, but Panik is in 2014 Bowman Sterling as a base card. Sometimes player selection comes down to dates when they debut. That might not explain Series 1 omissions, but it might also be that some will find their way into Series 2.

This product has just brought me BACK into collecting. I have only collected one chrome set since 1998 and it was a football set (Topps 2000). I was just getting ready to stop collecting altogether as the last couple of years of sets have simply looked like the same old stuff. I decided to try a couple of boxes of Chrome and the quality is heads-over-heels better than the base items. BTW, your site and advice/tips here is OUTSTANDING!

Cards look great. Chrome is my favorite set to buy. Plus it helps that I bought a blaster and pulled a Superfractor Cal Ripken alltime greatest rookie reprint. Love the Chrome

Picked up a blaster box and every single card was a purple refractor. I feel like this is odd? What are the chances.

Nice card cool inserts but no value, you can buy the whole set on ebay for 25.00 to 30.00 a set and boxes are 70+ depending on where you buy,so why buy a box ? 30 card insert sets 10.00 bucks :(

I love topps chrome… but 45 base autos? cmon now. Less no-namers. My box was literally the worst ever: 2 base no-namer autos, a blue jake marsinek, 2 bad die-cuts, 2 bad-1989 cards, a bryce topps shelf and no base of tanaka or abreu… smh.

The set needs to contain more base cards and more autographs. Would like to see a chrome card of every base card that is in Series I and II. And with so few rookie autos in set it is common to get doubles of same auto. I do like how the inserts are really limited. Makes getting an insert somewhat special unlike all of the inserts that are in Topps Series I, II, and Update.

Pulled a Abreu Topps Of The Class Auto redemption #’d/25 in one of my 2 hobby boxes! I’m pretty happy considering they are 1 in every 25 cases! I think I’m done with Chrome this year.

I am currently looking for an ATOMIC card of Tanner Roark and of course the 1/1 of Roark as well in Chrome. Can anyone help? Looking to buy them…only two remaining cards in the rainbow!

Love this product. Doing the set including Mets rookie autos , and can’t seem to find a Travis d’Arnaud base rookie auto. I can find the Black auto /100, Gold /50, Red /25, etc. but no base. Does anyone know if the Travis d’Arnaud base auto exists? If you know please let me know. Thanks!

Ryan, I pulled an Adam Jones buy back that was serial numbered 5/5 then I saw one on eBay that was 4/4 so are each of those 10 serial numbered cards like that? (1/1, 2/2, 3/3, etc.)

Koopa Troopa

based on my perception of the product from what i am seeing before a case break Saturday.

After opening a case I have many cards that have terrible centering / cutting. I would think for a product that is the flagship of topps the quality would be a little better.

I don’t live anywhere near a hobby shop, any clue as to where I should look for a blaster of these?

Matt

Eric, I heard that the Kris Bryant refractors from his Bowman Chrome RC are supposed to be in this set so maybe the Cubs won’t be such a bad team to get. Anyone else can confirm/deny that?

Eric
Eric

Wow, i guess i got duped into selecting the Cubs in an online team box break. According to this checklist there are 2 base cubs, no rookies (why not at least alcantara), and only one insert depicting a Cub player. all in on Ernie Banks I guess! Wow, I know we suck, but how do you represent an entire organization with 3 damn cards! And that includes parallels and autos! A little parity is all I ask for….wow Topps.

Ryan, who do you think will have more value on the secondary market: Erisbel Arruebarruena or Alexander Guerrero? Thanks

Ryan Cracknell
Ryan Cracknell

Kyle I personally am not overly familiar with either. Your best bet would be to check a few scouting reports and come to your own conclusion. Neither are hugely hot at this point.

I’m really excited for this release. Everything looks nice. And while I do like the variations I really hope there is a theme to them that makes them easy to spot. Not simply “this guy has his leg up” and “this other guy is wearing white pants.”
Can’t wait until Wednesday!!!

I wonder why Abreu is completely left off the sell sheet, he’s the man!

Logan Hubbard

I have another question are the box toppers in hobby boxes only or are they in the jumbo boxes too?

Andrew
Andrew

Is this the official finalized checklist? Seems like some names are left off and there are names I’ve never even heard of….seems to be released a lot sooner than previous products this year

Ryan Cracknell
Ryan Cracknell

Andrew It’s from Topps so, at this point, we assume it’s final (not that there haven’t been surprises in the past).

isaac
isaac

Hey Logan Hubbard, the only problem with jumbo this year is that Topps is putting 5 autos into it, not just 3, which in turn make the autos way less rare.

Kyle
Kyle

Ryan, do you think either Springer of Singleton will have a RC auto in this?

Ryan Cracknell
Ryan Cracknell

Not sure. Springer has been in a couple of sets so probably. Singleton was supposed to be in Finest according to a Topps press release shortly after his call-up but that doesn’t appear to be the case. The same release said Chrome as well but we’ll have to wait for them to confirm the checklist.

Dan

I bought a jumbo Box when bowman came out . I think its good because you get fancier hits. But if you’re going for completing a set it’s probably cheaper to get the regular boxes.

Logan Hubbard
Logan Hubbard

So I like to collect the entire set but so I like the idea of a jumbo boxes but what is the reasoning for the jumbo boxes? Is it going to weaken the product? I really like topps chrome and bought 4 boxes last year so would you suggest someone like me buying a couple jumbo boxes?

Haydn
Haydn

Any idea on when the checklist will be released?

Usually just before they’re out.

Will Marcus Stroman be in the set?
