User Rating:

Back for a third year, 2014 Panini Golden Age Baseball is so much more than baseball. A pop culture tribute to sports and entertainment through the 1980s, it's about nostalgia. From designs to insert concepts to the checklist, what's old is new again. Hobby boxes deliver both an autograph and a memorabilia card as well as a bunch of inserts.

The  2014 Panini Golden Age Baseball base set has 150 cards. This includes diamond standouts as well as some big names from the realms of history, music, movies, TV and other sports. The checklist includes such varied names as Ty Cobb, silent film legend Harold Lloyd, Charlton Heston and Johnny Cash. Even Mayberry's finest deputy, Don Knotts is in the set. There are also ten base set variations.

The base set has only a handful of traditional parallels. White are the most common, landing 1:20 packs. Other regular-sized parallels include First 50 (#/50) and Black (1/1).

There are still plenty of other parallels, only these are tobacco-sized mini cards. They come with seven different back styles: Hindu Brown (1:3 packs), Hindu Red (1:8 packs), Mono Blue (1:4 packs), Mono Green (1:6 packs), Croft's Swiss Milk Cocoa (1:24 packs), Smith's Mello Mint (1:48 packs) and Panini Logo (1/1).

Autographs are led by the on-card Historic Signatures. Like the base set, the subjects reach far beyond just baseball players. Among the notable names slated for the 50-card set are a couple of Hollywood legends who are making their first autographed card debuts, Dick Van Dyke and Sophia Loren. Fans of The Dukes of Hazzard can chase signatures from John Schneider (Beau), Tom Wopat (Luke) and Catherine Bach (Daisy). This is the first time all three have had autographs in the same set. Another TV icon, Loretta Swit (M*A*S*H's Margaret "Hot Lips" Houlihan) also makes her autograph debut.

Other autographs in 2014 Panini Golden Age Baseball include Historic Cuts, which are cut signatures numbered to 20 or less. The checklist has just four subjects: Phil Cavarretta, Charles O. Finley, Curt Gowdy and Gil McDougald. Classic Buyback Signatures use original cards from sets like The Dukes of Hazzard, Dallas, The Six Million Dollar Man and M*A*S*H.

Museum Age returns to deliver the relic content. Inserted one per hobby box, each card comes with a piece of memorabilia embedded into it. Notable names in the 40-card set are Farrah Fawcett, Jackie Kennedy, Patsy Cline and Jack Ruby.

2014 Panini Golden Age Baseball has a handful of basic insert sets as well: Fan Craze (eight cards, 1:12 packs), Headlines (nine cards, 1:12 packs), Newsmakers (eight cards, 1:24 packs) and 1913 National (12 cards, 1:12 packs). There is also Star Stamps (30 cards, 1:12 packs). Each card in this set has four athletes, historical events or celebrities.

The product is rounded out by both box toppers and box bottom cards. Every hobby box comes with either a 5 x 7 Box Topper that features someone who isn't in the base set or a perforated three-card Darby Chocolate Panel. 5 x 7 cards also have randomly inserted memorabilia parallels that are numbered to 50. Every hobby box also has a three-card panel printed on the bottom of the box.

Product Configuration: 24 packs per box, 6 cards per pack

2014 Panini Golden Age Product Review

Reviewed by Ryan Cracknell

Good: Gorgeous base set, intriguing autograph signers, plenty of nods to the past.

Bad: Inserts aren’t as compelling as last year, too many levels of mini parallels.

The Bottom Line: Golden Age continues to be one of my favorite brands in the entire hobby. Granted, I’m a fan of the non-baseball stuff. Top to bottom, the cards look great. It takes the nostalgia theme and runs with it. Every pack feels as though there’s something different. And how can you complain about a set of baseball cards that has Joey Ramone?

Staff Rating:
4.3 / 5.0

Card Design: 4.8/5.0

Have I mentioned how good 2014 Panini Golden Age looks? The base set is near-perfect save for the small “Manufactured by” note that’s out of place on the front. The elegant colors and lines take you way back. But it’s bright enough that it fits with the subjects that hail from the 1960s and ‘70s. It works on several levels.

Most of the inserts are solid as well. My favorite design for these can be found in the Headlines set. Mimicking a newspaper layout, something that’s not new on cards, it’s simple to an art.

If you’re willing to overlook Dick Van Dyke, all of the autographs are on-card, another big plus for the product.

Checklist: 4.0/5.0

It’s the checklist that makes Golden Age so eclectic. While there’s a noticeable lack of big-money cards, that’s not a bad thing. This is a product that has more niche appeal than Topps Allen & Ginter. It strikes a nostalgic chord. As a result, it’s not so much about the mojo or whatever you want to call it.

Last year, the Bad News Bears were a focal point. 2014 Panini Golden Age doesn’t top that. However, it does spread a wider median when it comes to autograph signers. There are more signers that have wider appeal, although none that should command huge sums.

2013 Golden Age had several basic inserts I found myself chasing, including the Playing Cards. While I still like a lot of what 2014 has to offer in this department, I don’t feel the need to chase them. Also, there are too many levels of mini parallels. Given the composition of the product, I think it’d be better served going with one or two rather than the handful that there are.

Value: 3.5/5.0

2014 Panini Golden Age is one of the cheaper products on the market. And if you wait, prices will likely dip some more in the months ahead. That takes away a lot of the risk that comes with high-dollar products where a box’s worth is often (perhaps, unfairly) based on the hits. You’re not going to make a lot of money breaking Golden Age but there is enough niche appeal that you’re likely not to lose much either.

The Fun Factor: 4.8/5.0

If you’re like me and you’re happy mixing sports and pop culture for a nostalgia fix, it’s tough not to love 2014 Panini Golden Age. And I mean love. From the gorgeous images and designs that pull out the iconic personalities to the fun autographs and all the little things in between, this remains one of my go-to brands and one I can’t wait for next year.

Amazingly my Spinx card showed up in the mail last week, can’t seem to find any other live copies.

I really like this product, a nice variety of sports and non-sports.
It’s a fun product for the price.

Does anyone know if the Michael Spinks historical auto exists?
I sent in a redemption for this card a year ago so I was just wondering how long I should wait before requesting a replacement.

Thanks

I opened three boxes of this, one box was missing an autograph card. This kind of thing happens too often with the big card companies. It clearly states on the front of the box, “One Historic Signatures Card and One Museum Age Memorabilia Card Per Box”. If it’s not true don’t print it on the box. I’m through with buying boxes from Panini and Topps.

Building the base set was very easy. I pulled a sweet Elvis relic, that almost paid for the 8 retail boxes I purchased. I bought these when they first were released, but I waited to post. I’m now wanting to get all the variations. I don’t want the white border variations. I want the picture variations.

Great set and I pulled plenty from the couple of boxes I purchased including the #11 Jacqueline Kennedy authentic material #16/50 box topper, two SP-19 Addie Joss cards, Museum Age relic cards #22 Bill Mumy (I love Lost in Space), #30 Susan Olsen and two #31 Christopher Knight card, Historic Signatures: AUS Geese Ausbie, CHA Charlene Tilton, JUN Junior Johnson, MAJ Lee Majors and PRK Dave Parker. I think this is a great set!

For me this is what a set of trading cards should be about. The mix of sports, entertainment and historical figures is for me appealing. The base set is small at 150, which makes it easier to complete a set. I love the mini tobacco cards and the insert subsets. I’m not a fan of memorabilia cards but The Museum Age cards here are well done. On card autographs are always best and this set includes them.
One other thing I like is the absence of the flashy refractor/chrome type cards. Plain cardboard cards are always a plus for me. This is definitely a 5 star set for me.

Fun….yea…..always curious 2 see what your going 2 pull with a product like this. Value…..no. I bought 1 box & got my money back with 2 autos & a rare box topper, but in reality you more than likely wont. Something different yea…..but don’t expect anything huge. Just entertainment.

What happened to Johnny Cash? He was one of the cards I was looking forward to getting and he’s not in the set. Overall, I like the product, but it doesn’t seem as fun as last year’s. Might be the lack of Bad News Bears and 3 Stooges. Or it might be the lack of Johnny Cash.

Al Hathaway

Is there a print run of the classic buyback autographs? I believe I just pulled the Catherine Bach. Not sure how many there are but the auto looks good and there is the indention of the stamp for it being an authentic buyback.

How happy or disappointed should I be?
