2013 Topps Tier One Baseball sticks with the formula that was popular with many collectors last year. Every single-pack box comes with just three cards: a pair of autographs and a relic. Looking for base cards? Look elsewhere. 2013 Topps Tier One Baseball is all about the hits.

See also: 2013 Topps Tier One Baseball Hot List

On the Rise Autographs fall one per box. Signed on-card with blue ink, all are numbered to 399 or less. The set focuses on young stars. Among the more than 50 signers are Mike Trout, Yu Darvish, Manny Machado and Dylan Bundy. Collectors should be realistic with their expectations and understand that not every signer is a top-tier player, although there is solid balance.

Crowd Pleaser Autographs hone in on fan favorites. The checklist has more than 50 signers from past and present stars, all numbered to 299 or less. R.A. Dickey, Jose Bautista, Al Kaline, Robinson Cano, Dale Murphy and Jim Palmer are among the signers. Base versions are signed in blue ink.

Every 12-box case has one Tier One Autograph. All signers are superstars, both current and retired. All are numbered, none higher than 199. Among those on the checklist are Hank Aaron, Ken Griffey Jr, Sandy Koufax, Cal Ripken, Willie Mays, Nolan Ryan and Miguel Cabrera.

On the Rise, Crowd Pleases and Tier One Autographs all have three levels of parallels: Red Ink (#/25), Silver Ink (#/10) and Gold Ink (1/1).

One of 2012's most popular inserts, Clear Reprint Autographs, return in 2013 Topps Tier One Baseball. Printed on acetate, the cards feature classic cards with a new look. Frank Thomas, Mays, Aaron, Reggie Jackson, Rickey Henderson and Buster Posey are among those signing.

Other autograph sets include Dual Autographs (15 cards, #/25), Triple Autographs (five cards, #/10) and Cut Signatures (25 cards, all 1/1).

All single- and dual-signed autographs in 2013 Topps Tier One Baseball come on-card.

Tier One Relics has a massive checklist of more than 70 active and retired players. All come numbered to 399. Parallels come in the form of Dual Swatch (#/99) and Triple Swatch (#/25). Autographed relics are numbered to 99. Multi-swatch autographed relics come with patch pieces. Dual-Patch Autographs are numbered to 25 while Triple-Patch Autographs are one-of-ones.

There are also Dual Autographed Tier One Relics book cards. Numbered to 10, they use sticker autographs.

Tier One Legends (15 cards, #/99) follow a similar pattern as the Tier One Relics but with lower numbering. Dual-swatch cards are limited to 25 and triple-swatch cards are numbered to 5.

Prodigious Patches (25 cards, #/10) have jumbo patch pieces from both past and present players. Autographed versions are signed on-card and also numbered to 10.

Bat knobs played a huge part in last year's set. Not surprisingly they return. The one-of-one cards switch to a horizontal design. They come with an entire end from a bat. New to 2013 are 25 Autographed Bat Knobs, which are hard-signed.

Also new are All-Star Relics. The one-of-ones have huge patch pieces from 2012 All-Star workout jerseys.

Every fourth pack comes with a second relic card.

Product Configuration: 1 pack per box, 3 cards per pack
Price Point: High-End Baseball Card
Target Audience: Hit Seekers, Autograph Collectors, Memorabilia Card Collectors

Product Review

2013 Topps Tier One Baseball Product Review

Reviewed by Kerwin Leong

Good: All cards are hits. On-card signatures. Strong selection of players. Pele autographs randomly inserted.

Bad: Only three cards per box. Pricey.

The Bottom Line: 2013 Topps Tier One is aimed at collectors who like to take big risks with the possibility of high rewards. If you are okay with taking your chances on the high price tag, there are some great potential hits. Book Cards, Patches, and Bat Knobs lead the chase.

Staff Rating:
0 / 5.0

Card Design: 4.0/5.0

All cards are made of thick stock. Some could be prone to chipping and dings on the corners. This is most visible with the Crowd Pleaser autographs due to their black background. These are especially appealing. The main Tier One autographs and relics have clean, albeit very similar designs. For a high-end product, it would be nice if Topps made the base relics stand out more. I could not tell the difference between this Tier One relic and any other Topps relics with the exception of the Tier One logo on the card. If the base relics would contain a combination of two different types of swatches, it might differentiate the brand.

Checklist: 4.5/5.0

2013 Topps Tier One does not have any base cards. The whole product is comprised of hits from past and present players as well as many noteworthy Hall of Famers. It's not all top stars, but that's where part of the risk comes in. There are enough top players to make it exciting.

Value: 3.5/5.0

The release has plenty of big, pricey hits. On the flip side, you may have to settle for three base hit cards from solid players or young players instead.

The Fun Factor: 3.5/5.0

Since there are only three cards in the pack, the initial excitement doesn't last long. Collectors who like the prolonged experience of the more standard twenty-plus packs per box may want to hold off.

Offsetting Dawson’s review with 5 stars.

Tyler Skaggs, Jim Rice, and Heyward were NOT “suck” players! Sure, neither of them are no Mickey Mantle or Babe Ruth. But all three players certainly are on the upper tier of talent in baseball history.

That, and nobody forces people to purchase high-risk, high-reward sets. If you are going to be upset about what you recieve and the lack of value out of a bunch of BASEBALL CARDS, then perhaps putting that money into an ACTUAL investment, like a mutual fund, an IRA, or a 401(k) would be a far smarter move to make.

These higher-priced sets are for people with deep pockets, and who want a higher-quality collection. It is not for the average joe. That’s what the flagship, and opening day sets are for. That’s also what REAL investments like retirement is for.

Having said that, this set did not seem to have held its value over the past two years. Hobby boxes up on ebay for between $60 – $80 right now.

I had a good experience with Tier one and got a lucky hit a Chase Headley and Alex Cobb Auto. Nice 1/1 Bat Knob of Zack Cozart so can’t complain. Thanks Topps!

3 Cards:
Tyler Skaggs (Who?)
Jime Rice (Worst Hall of Famer)
Heyward (nowhere near tier one)

Why, oh why, did I buy this?!! Dear Topps, if you are going to advertise tier one level of players, don’t sell me a box of 3 losers. These players suck. I would rather pay $200 and have you actually live up to the hype than pay $100 and pull 3 tools. I am livid. Will never buy again.

Great concept, but the execution this year was a little weak. Especially the copper rose autos.

I purchased this set for the first time ever this year. I was dissipointed in the fact I pulled only a few cards that are worth keeping. Spend your money on other cards.

This product, along with most of the releases Topps has seen fit to shove out the door like the uncle who has over-stayed his visit, reeks.
This couldn’t have been more disappointing and my review is based upon more than 1 break and having witnessed breaks at my LHS.
Redemptions are numerous… and Topps’ redemption fulfillment program is sketchy, to say the least; I have a number of “pending” redemptions that, were they children, would be in elementary school by now.
Any way, breaking a $99 box, as per LHS pricing, and pulling Mike Napoli and Mike Fiers autos simply sucks lemons. Pulling autos of Rutledge and Russ Martin was equally anti-climactic.

Stay away. Stay far, far away.

I busted a case of this product, didn’t get a bat knob, got 4 redemptions, like was stated in another comment, what else is new?
Overall wasn’t to impressed, did get a couple of good pulls, Pedro Martinez au #50, don sutton au # 299,
Dual auto relic, Cal Ripken and Manny Machado, Xander Bogaerts au, but again overall i thought it would be a better product, won’t buy anymore of it, that’s for sure.

Watched two cases get opened, neither had a single card worth over $50. Two whole cases. Have seen several other boxes opened with similar results. That plus the fact there are redemptions for autos…one of the weakest products I’ve seen in a long time.

I tried a box today. 3 players completely unfamiliar to me. 1 triple jersey #/25. Not even close to the value of the box.

I have seen nothing in these boxes to justify the high prices, especially for just three cards for the average box. Terrible Value to price ratio… Of course there is always the possibility of a strong hit… If you’re going for that, good luck. You’ll need it.

Picked up my first and last two boxes of T1…should have learned from my break experiences this weekend (shutout in two breaks–had Cardinals and Giants). My best break hit was a copper rose Griffey, Jr, redemption (not bad on that one). Of the two boxes, best hit was a Mike Mussina copper rose redemption. Did get four cards in each (2/2 auto/relic), which must be the bonus boxes I heard about. Still, hits were mediocre at best (and relics are pretty much a waste anymore, with a few exceptions). And as Mark noted above, redemptions are oftentimes not fulfilled, which is just plain deceitful. Funny how many nights I go to bed kind of hating Topps since they became part of the Disney empire. I bet Cy Berger didn’t even like ol’ weird Walt and his squeaky-voiced talking mouse …and Cy would not approve of the 2013 Tier One product…or relics…or redemptions. We miss you Cy.

Looks great in the sale sheets, but chances of getting one of those scoring a true hit are like winning the lottery. I’ll wait to pick up the cards I like from comc.

I cannot reccomend this product. Keeper hits are hard to come by.
I actually pulled a redemption for a basic GU tier one card of Pedro Martinez. I understand redemptions for autos but not for gu relics. Pretty lame IMO. A two star product at best.

One pack. Willie Mays copper rose ink auto /25. Bad part it is a redemption I probably will never get. They will probably send me one of those fancy replacement autos:-(

Watched a case break last night. I was way less than impressed, our best card was a Sutter /10 auto.

I was involved in 4 case breaks today. Didn’t see any Puigs to address a previous concern. No cut autos, no bat knobs, no all-star patches. There were some nice hits, Koufax auto, Hank Aaron redemption auto. There were an awful lot of redemptions which is just the norm these days I guess. The “Rose” signatures all were streaky from trying to sign that pen on the glossy card surface. They may want to re-think that. There were an awful lot of duplicates between all 4 cases and I guess that happens. Big thing was the overall collation. I case was nothing but Rangers and Red Sox. Had people laughing or crying depending on who you had. I had RS in one and got 7 hits. In another I had Marlins for 2 cases and got zip (kind of expected that).

product delayed from original launch date and no Puig listed on Checklist. Looked at Ebay and not 1 listed.

jv » Final checklist isn’t out yet (only preliminary from when they originally announced the set six months ago) and it’s only the first official day of release so it may be a little early to say whether there are Puig cards. If there are, probably tough, though.
