Product Details
2013 Topps Magic Football has a bright retro vibe to it. And even though it's targeted at set builders looking for a challenge, there are plenty of modern elements as well including three autographs in every hobby box.
The 2013 Topps Magic Football base set has 330 cards. Rookies, current stars and legends from the past are all part of the checklist. And while 330 cards is a decent size, it's not so simple. A full third of the set, 110 cards, are short prints. Mini parallel cards fall one per pack. Besides a basic version, there are also four that come with colored borders: Green, Black, Blue and Red (#/50).
Leading the chase are the three autographs per box. As many as 150 players have basic Magic Autographs, which are essentially amped up base cards with the addition of a sticker autograph. Bordered parallels include Black (#/5) and one-of-one Red. The product also has a pair of multi-autographed card sets: Dual (#/25) and Six Autographs (#/5). 2013 Topps Magic Football also has Mini Autographs (#/10) and Mini Autograph Books (#/5), which have a pair of signatures.
Memorabilia cards don't play a huge role in the product, but there is one set. Magic Rookie Relics come numbered to 99 and have an over-sized jersey relic. A patch parallel is limited to 5 copies each.
2013 Topps Magic Football also has four basic insert sets. Ground & Pound highlights 25 of the NFL's best running backs while Aerial Attack does the same for quarterbacks. Rookie Enchantment returns with 33 framed cards of top rookies. '48 Magic uses the 1948 Topps Magic as the basis for a 25-card set of rookies, veterans and all-time greats.

2013 Topps Magic Football Product Review

Good: Deep rookie checklist, three autographs per box, solid variety of inserts and parallels, Rookie Enchantment cards look great.
Bad: Sticker autographs, top heavy with low-end rookie autographs, value is not there.
The Bottom Line: Topps Magic is normally a good budget product, but with a weak rookie class and minimal veteran autographs, you are much more likely to end up with three $1 autographs and a ton of base cards, than anything else. This product is best suited for set collectors who don’t mind a huge short print list and budget rookie collectors.
Card Design: 3.5/5.0
If Topps Magic has one thing covered, it is the base card design. The full-size and mini design incorporates generally good images with a minimal border, thin stock and low-end finish. The simple parallels don’t add much, but the occasional color is a nice change of pace over a sea of white borders.
The main autograph set is literally just the base cards with a sticker autograph, and this will likely encompass the three hits found per box. It is always tough to feel good about products that rely heavily on base sticker autographs, but unfortunately it remains a common concept in the collecting world.
Among the inserts, Rookie Enchantments are back from last year and are the clear standouts. The double-layered cards feature a player image card on the bottom and a die-cut purple border card on top. The effect is similar to an ornate frame, complete with gold foil swirls and text.
The tiny 1948 inserts also return and are smaller than the base mini cards. They feature an appealing look and only drop two per box which makes for a challenging 25-card set. Although they were tough to pull since they were numbered to five, it is disappointing that Topps elected to remove the autographed versions that were found in 2012.
Ground And Pound and Aerial Attack inserts don’t really add much to the product outside of color. Both designs come across as cheesy filler, including drawings of jet planes and oversized text.
Checklist: 3.25/5.0
With 220 base cards and 110 short prints, 2013 Topps Magic has a deep checklist, especially for rookie collectors. This can be a great thing for set and team collectors.
However, considering the main autograph set is a partial parallel of the base set, including autographs for 150 of the 220 base cards, collectors are left with a lot of mid and late-round rookies that occupy a large portion of the set in an already watered-down rookie class.
Value: 2.0/5.0
Based on the current price of around $70 per box and three guaranteed autographs per box, it would appear that the value is there. But, when you consider that the autographs are all sticker signatures in a low-end product, and the weak draft class is further multiplied by a huge checklist, the chance to even come close to covering your purchase price seems slim.
The short prints and mini parallels are another place that could help the value, but in this instance, it adds little. With 110 short prints, which fall every other pack, the SP amount is doubled from 2012. There are simply too many short prints and they are not that rare. And while the mini parallels are somewhat amusing, and do have a following, they are quite common. The only really strong option is the mini Red Border parallel. These cards are buoyed by being the only numbered base parallel in the product.
The Fun Factor: 4.0/5.0
Topps Magic can be a very fun product. The many cards and players gives you a chance to see a larger representation of the NFL than most products. While the card quality is not amazing, the cards themselves look good.
