Axl Rose and the 2013 Topps Archives Baseball Heavy Metal Autographs Lineup

2013 Topps Archives Baseball Heavy Metal Autographs is one of those quirky insert sets that some collectors love and others loathe. It's pretty much exactly like the musicians included in the set. Just as 2013 Topps Archives Baseball focuses largely on the 1980s, the checklist is composed of big-haired rockers from the Golden Age of Heavy Metal. Included is the first certified autograph card from Axl Rose (or at least a promise for one).

All 2013 Topps Archives Baseball Heavy Metal Autographs come with on-card signatures from the featured signers. They're also nearly all pictured as they looked in their glory days.

A parallel version, call Real Heavy Metal Autographs, are printed on actual metal as opposed to card stock. Limited to 25 copies each, they're inserted in packs as redemption.

The set's only other redemption is the centerpiece of the set, Guns 'N Roses frontman Axl Rose. Early sales have Rose selling for $250-300. However, these prices could be a little soft as some collectors are hesitant as to whether the singer will come through and sign his cards.

HMA-AR Axl Rose, Guns N' Roses - Redemption

Axl Rose is a true legend, albeit one that comes with quite the reputation. Part of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, his hits include "Paradise City," "Sweet Child O' Mine" and "Welcome to the Jungle." When the signed copies start showing up, it's very possible these cards could go through the roof. Hopefully it won't be a wait like G N' R's last album, Chinese Democracy.

HMA-BB Bobbie Brown

Bobbie Brown might not be a rocker herself, but she was a central part of one of glam rock's most iconic music videos, "Cherry Pie" by Warrant. She was also married to the band's late lead singer, Jani Lane.

HMA-DS Dee Snider, Twisted Sister

Twisted Sister singer, Dee Snider, is one of the most recognizable hair rockers from the era -- at least when he's in full makeup. His band was responsible for the hits We're Not Gonna Take It and I Wanna Rock. This isn't Snider's first trading card appearance. He also has autographs in 2007 Donruss Americana and 2008 Upper Deck Spectrum Baseball Spectrum of Stars.

HMA-KW Kip Winger, Winger

Kip Winger came into the spotlight late during the latter stages of the Hair Metal Era as the lead singer for Winger. Their hits included "Seventeen" and "Miles Away." But don't let Winger's awesome hair fool you. He's studied classical music. Winger has also worked with several big names, including Alice Cooper and Bob Dylan.

HMA-LF Lita Ford, The Runaways

Lita Ford is one of the most recognizable ladies of rock. She got her big break playing guitar for The Runaways, who were fronted by Joan Jett. If you get a Lita Ford Heavy Metal Autographs card, be sure to check the back. Some are signed on both sides. Collectors can find additional Lita Ford autographs in 2009 Upper Deck Spectrum Baseball and 2011 Leaf Pop Century.

HMA-RB Reb Beach, Winger

Reb Beach joined Kip Winger, playing guitar for Winger. He's also played with Alice Cooper, Whitesnake and Dokken. This is Beach's first certified autograph card. His first trading cards can be found in 1991 Brockum Rock Cards.

HMA-SI Scott Ian, Anthrax

For music fans, Scott Ian is best known for playing guitar for Anthrax. He also had a successful stint as host of VH1's Rock Show where he interviewed many of rock's biggest stars. More recently, Ian joined a professional online poker site.

HMA-SB Sebastian Bach, Skid Row

Sebastian Bach shot to fame singing for Skid Row, their most notable hit being "18 and Life." Since then, he has shifted to acting, appearing on Broadway and on TV. Bach also signed for 2008 Upper Deck Spectrum Baseball.

HMA-SP Stephen Pearcy, Ratt

Stephen Pearcy is the lead singer of Ratt, one of the earlier glam rock bands. The band dates back as far as the mid-1970s as Mickey Ratt but was eventually shortened. Their biggest hits include "Round and Round" and "Wanted Man."

HMA-TL Tommy Lee, Motley Crue

Tommy Lee, Motley Crue's drummer, has managed to keep himself in the spotlight. In recent years he's taken advantage of the rise in popularity of reality TV. He was also famously married to Pamela Anderson, which became all the more gossip-worthy when a very private video between the two became very public. Lee also has autographs in 2012 Leaf Pop Century.

  1. Does anyone know if these things count as a “hit” in a hobby box, or are they a bonus auto?

  2. Do you think anyone will ever receive their Axl autograph?

  3. Drewzer There shouldn’t be redemptions if a deal isn’t in place. At this point it’s up to Axl to sign his cards. Personally, I think they’ll eventually get done. When? Not really sure.

  4. I pulled a Real Heavy Metal Auto of Sebastian Bach, the redemption is still pending though. Anyone have any ideas as to how long the status usually takes to change?

  5. 2013 Archives are still one of my all-time favorite releases from Topps. I can’t get enough hobby boxes to break. 4+ years after their initial release and I’m still pulling great cards. Just snatched a Kip Winger auto today to go with the Tommy Lee and Bobbie Brown Heavy Metal autos I already have.
