Product Details
2013 Panini Hometown Heroes Baseball is a throwback-style set that mixes players from the 1950s through to the present day. With three autographs per box, designs come with a nostalgic feel. With 24-cards per pack, there's even more to give collectors an old-time feeling.
The 2013 Panini Hometown Heroes base set consists of 200 cards. Taking the best from each city, it has more than six decades' worth of superstars. Every other pack has a parallel. State versions fall five per box while Zip Codes parallels are one per box.
Every 12-pack box also has three total autographs from six different sets. Hometown Signatures cards come with on-card signatures. Similar to Fan Favorites Autographs in Topps Archives, the focus is on players popular with the fans and not necessarily widespread superstardom. The checklist includes 100 players. Scripted Legacy autographs incorporate induction speeches into the design (the text, not sound chips). Left Their Marks focuses on memorable players.
Sportdiscs harkens back to the lenticular discs that used to come with 7-11 Slurpees. The round "cards" are inserted 1:4 packs (three per box). Nicknames (1:12 packs) have both a player image along with a cartoon illustration of their alternate moniker. Other inserts in 2013 Panini Hometown Heroes include Curtain Call (1:4 packs), City Hall (1:6 packs), Defining Moments (1:6 packs), Rivalry (1:12 packs) and Homegrown Heroes (1:12 packs).
Product Configuration: 12 packs per box, 24 cards per pack
Price Point: Mid-End Baseball Card
Target Audience: Nostalgic Card Collectors, Autograph Collectors, Set Builders
2013 Panini Hometown Heroes Baseball Box Break

Product Review
2013 Panini Hometown Heroes Baseball Product Review
Reviewed by Ryan Cracknell
Good: It's fun. Huge packs. Plenty of on-card autographs.
Bad: Lots of unnecessary parallel inserts. Design elements are hit and miss. Might work better as a product with just retired players.
The Bottom Line: 2013 Panini Hometown Heroes isn't for every collector. It's loud and it's proud. Personally, I had a lot of fun with many parts of it. Just about everything but the steady flow of needless insert parallels. This is a nostalgia fix. It's doubtful many of the collectors opening it, myself included, are buying it for cards simply because they're rare and have a different color border. I'm okay with not every card being a superstar. Opening it took me back to when I first started collecting in the late 1980s where casual ripping led to large stacks of cards at the end. There's none of this three cards per pack stuff. But while the design and content is very much a retro trip, the checklist doesn't fully commit. I found this to be a fun break and a line that will hopefully continue. That said, there's room for it to grow and further distance itself from Panini's direct response to Topps Archives.
Card Design: 3.0/5.0
I go back and forth over the base card design. Sometimes I love how bright they are, kind of like a mix of 1930s Goudey with mid-70s Topps. But then I look again and I'm not a fan. I think it's the yellow. And then there are the card backs. Again, they're full of life, but the colors and patterns make me think of them as the argyle sweater of the hobby. This is likely to be one of the more devisive designs of the year. I suspect some will love it while others will fall on the opposite end of the spectrum. I can certainly understand both sides.
A huge plus are the lenticular Sportdiscs. Even though the idea is based off of the discs found with Slurpees and other premiums, they're different from anything else in the hobby today.
As a whole, the basic inserts are the biggest disappointment to me. For the most part, they're bland, boring and excessive. I believe inserts should be distinct from the rest of the set they're connected to, often with a premium look and feel. Kind of like the Sportdiscs. Most of the other inserts use the same card stock, so no enhancements there. They also play off similar "fan favorite" themes that run throughout the base set as well. All this begs the question, why are they here then?
Like Topps Archives, a big plus is the fact that a lot of the autographs are on-card. It's also nice that most of the signers come from an era where autographs aren't scribbles.
Checklist: 2.8/5.0
While it's easy to say that Panini's at a disadvantage compared to Topps since they can't use MLB logos and trademarks, they have a little more freedom in some regards. They're ability (and willingness) to devote more space to retired players is an advantage. And while 2013 Panini Hometown Heroes Baseball devotes a lot of its checklist to players from the past, it doesn't go all-in. As a result, I think it suffers as far as identity goes. This product screams nostalgia. And while Bryce Harper, Yasiel Puig and Mike Trout are great to have, they're not nostalgia. The base set feels like it's modeled after Topps Archives. That's not a bad thing, but it needs to distance itself a little more in this regard.
My biggest issue with this release is the basic inserts. Not only do a lot of them look and feel plain, there are far too many of them. Even worse, there are parallels that feel as though they're in the product simply so it can promise something rare. I'll take something compelling and fun over rarity. Even if there aren't many of these insert parallels, it doesn't matter because they don't add much. After opening a box, I also had so few of each insert set that I didn't feel compelled to build the set because I was so far off from making a major dent in any of them. That's a problem. Without the parallels, my opinion might have changed. I'd be that much closer so it'd feel like I could accomplish it. In turn, I'd have more of a reason to get more packs.
One insert set I really don't get is Rivalry. The checklist consists of players who played for different teams. For Darryl Strawberry, it's about New York versus New York. If this were a Topps set, it'd be fine. But since Panini can't use the logos or the nicknames, the end result makes little sense. This may be a minor quibble in the big concern, but for a set that focuses on a lot of other details well, it's a pretty glaring issue when it's noticed.
I'd love to see what a combined Hometown Heroes/Golden Age set would look like. Devote the base set entirely to retired baseball players and use the inserts to focus on pop culture and other, more obscure sports. That would solve a lot of the problems I have with the Hometown Heroes inserts as Golden Age is a lot of fun in that regard.
Value: 3.5/5.0
As far as autographs go, yes there are three per box. But like Topps Archives, expect more nostalgia than return on your dollar. This isn't a product for those looking to make a big monetary return. Rather, it's for those of us who get a kick out of landing autographs from occasional All-Stars from another era. The many inserts and parallels have the feeling of trying to push added value, but with their limited appeal, it's not really the case as it doesn't look like a lot of people are looking for them.
So while you're not likely to see a major money return, you do end up with a huge stack of cards afterward with lots of names from the past as well as the big ones from today.
The Fun Factor: 4.25/5.0
So while I have major issues with some aspects of Hometown Heroes, I still had a lot of fun with it. The names took me back to when I was a kid, just getting into baseball and collecting. The parts that interest me are simple, nostalgic fun. Because my biggest concerns have to do with the inserts, it's pretty easy to forget about them.
I love the massive packs and don't mind that it means less packs per box. The Sportdiscs are some of my favorite inserts of the year. I like that I have a large stack of base cards to sort through. These are all little things. But each of them takes me back. And it's that retro vibe that I hope continues and grows in the future, not the modern sense of manufactured rarity. There's a place for that in the hobby, just not here.

Andrew
Just opened a case of this 4 year old product. A really great product to break at this price point. The signatures are from an era of players who actually know how to sign their name, not just some initials scribbled on like they were holding the pen with their mouth like today’s players are known for. Base autographs are on card, which is nice. The cards feel like opening 1983 Topps with better quality control.
