2013 Leaf The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones trading cards follow in the footsteps of the Twilight franchise and The Hunger Games. At least, the movies share a similar tone, themes and target audience. The cards? Leaf is taking a totally different approach for The Mortal Instruments, focusing more on hits than plain releases produced thus far for other recent teen franchises.
2013 Leaf The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones base set has 100 cards. They don't just focus on the film's story. Character cards and behind-the-scenes shots round out the checklist. The film stems from the best-selling young adult novel that mixes action, fantasy and a little bit of romance. It features magic, battles that sprawl across multiple dimensions and some angst.
Every box comes with three hits. Autographs and autographed memorabilia cards combine to fall two per box. Lead stars Lily Collins, Lena Heady and Jonathan Rhys Meyers are among the signers. Each have both regular autographs and signed costume cards. While Heady has signed previously for Game of Thrones and Rhys Meyers did for The Tudors, these are Collins' first certified autographed cards. She is considered one of Hollywood's rising young stars. She previously starred in The Blind Side. Other signers include Jamie Campbell Bower, CCH Pounder, director Harald Zwart and Mortal Instruments author, Cassandra Clare. Some autographs also have rare image variations.
Memorabilia cards come with jumbo swatches of costumes worn in the film. The set includes costumes from 13 different characters. These pieces are much larger than those found in most other entertainment trading card sets.
City of Bones is the first film in what is anticipated to be a long-running franchise. Leaf holds the license for future movies making this the potential start of a long run of sets, similar to what Artbox did with Harry Potter but on a much more limited scale. While recent sets for Twilight and The Hunger Games were made for the mass retail market, 2013 Leaf The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones is a limited hobby offering of just 300 cases.
