User Rating:

While Bowman Platinum has been around for a few years now, it broke through in a big way last year. 2013 Bowman Platinum Baseball looks to build on that momentum with the familiar mix of colorful autographs and some expanding partnerships with the Arizona Fall League and Baseball America.

Every 2013 Bowman Platinum hobby box is highlighted by a pair of Autographed Prospect Refractors and a Refractor Autographed Relic. Boxes come with 20 packs of five cards.

The 2013 Bowman Platinum base set has 100 cards, mixing both rookies and veterans. As with past Platinum sets, cards are printed on rainbow foil stock. Base cards have three parallels: Gold (1:5 packs), Blue Sapphire (1:10 packs) and Ruby (1:20 packs).

A similar design printed on silver foil stock is used for the 100-card set of Prospect inserts. Parallels include X-FractorsGreen Refractors (#/399), Blue Refractors (#/199), Gold Refractors (#/50), Red Refractors (#/25), Atomic Refractors (#/5) and SuperFractors (1/1). Atomic Refractors and SuperFractors are only in hobby packs.

Autographed Prospect Refractors are all signed on-card. Using a horizontal format, there is plenty of space for the signature. Besides regular versions, collectors can find seven parallels, starting with Green Refractors (#/399), Blue Refractors (#/199), Gold Refractors (#/50) and Red Refractors (#/25). Exclusive to hobby packs are Atomic Refractors (#/5), SuperFractors (1/1) and Printing Plates.

Relics in 2013 Bowman Platinum Baseball draw extensively from the Arizona Fall League Rising Stars Game. Autographed relics and Autographed Jumbo Relics that highlight prospects use swatches from this game. Current players also have autographed relics. Done on Chrome stock, parallels for both sets include Blue Refractors (#/199), Gold Refractors (#/50), Red Refractors (#/25), Atomic Refractors (#/5), SuperFractors (1/1) and Printing Plates. All of these parallels except Blue Refractors use patches.

The ink runs heavy in other parts of 2013 Bowman Platinum Baseball. Dual Autographs (#/25) have two prospects while Triple Autographs (#/10) and Hexagraph Book Cards (#/5) use a mix of veterans, rookies and prospects. Purely Platinum Autographs are one-of-ones that are printed on simulated metal. The Bowman Black program continues with 25 more cards numbered to 25. Now in their second season, the cross-brand set has silver signatures done on a black background.

Additional relics include Jumbo Relics that are numbered to 5. One-of-one Prospect Bat Plates return, highlighting the barrel of a rising star.

Redemptions are randomly inserted in the product good for autographed baseballs, game-used hats, game-used bases and game-used baseballs from the AFL Rising Stars Game.

Die-cut card fans have a pair of insert sets to look for. Cutting Edge Stars spotlights rookies and current stars. Like base cards, they're printed on rainbow foil stock. Relic versions are numbered to 50 while Autographs are limited to 25 copies each. Diamonds in the Rough includes prospects that Baseball America writers think are among the best in the game. Diamond Cut parallels are numbered to 25 while Autographed Diamond Cuts are numbered to 5.

The Blue Sapphire Refractor program continues, offering souped-up reprints of some of the most popular Bowman-brand cards of all-time. Autographs are numbered to 5.

2013 Bowman Platinum Baseball also has a contest where the grand prize is a trip to the 2013 Arizona Fall League Rising Stars Game.

2013 Bowman Platinum Baseball Product Review

Reviewed by Paul Lesko

Good: Always a fun product with a good card design for large, on-card autographs. Base cards have a quality feel again. And it's got Puig!

Bad: 2013 Bowman Platinum Baseball is a high-quality product. The chances of big pulls will draw a lot of collectors to it, but if you are an autograph collector, it may be cheaper to pick off the ones you want from eBay.

Staff Rating:
3.8 / 5.0

Card Design: 4.2/5.0

Like last year's product, and the year before, the 2013 Bowman Platinum Baseball card design is good. The base cards have a great feel with decent action shots. The autographed cards provide a maximized area for signing. Quite a few of the players actually used as much of the area as they could (although some, like Keury De La Cruz, still smashed theirs into a minimal space).

The downside is yet again the base cards and base autographs are nearly identical to the last two years' designs. Although, as I commented last year, this is a consistent theme with most card products. Unique and distinctive designs each year are a seemingly lost art.

Still, it is a pretty set.

Checklist: 3.5/5.0

Face it, you're going for a Yasiel Puig auto. Or a Byron Buxton. Or a Carlos Correa. After that, there's a pretty big drop off in this one. Sure, there are some other nice pulls like Harper (Still? How many years is this?) and Trout but this year really suffers from a lot of, "Who the heck is that?"

Unfortunately, if you're going for the Puig, or Buxton, or Correa autographs, you're likely pulling a redemption.

Value: 3.5/5.0

2013 Bowman Platinum Baseball is an affordable, higher-end prospecting product that should, in theory, get you a better return than Bowman or Bowman Chrome (three hits per box, compared to one). Still, Bowman and Bowman Chrome autographs are more desirable than their Platinum counterparts, so that's not necessarily true.

However, this product does have Puig. So, unopened hobby boxes and packs will sell for a surplus, especially down the road if Puig continues on his tear. Given the weaker checklist, if you are holding for investment, it might be best to not open it.

But don't hold onto it for too long. Most of the best cards are redemptions that will expire in 2016. Unfortunately then, this places a shelf-life on this product for unopened boxes.

The Fun Factor: 3.8/5.0

This was my third time breaking a Bowman Platinum box, and I enjoyed it less this year than last (although I did enjoy it more than 2011). With each box guaranteeing two on-card autographs and a patch autograph, there is fun (and some value) in just about every hobby box.

However, there are a lot of redemptions, and I pulled one, which killed my fun a bit (about a 1/3 of it). And I didn't even pull a good one. Imagine, pulling a Puig redemption. How fun is that? Sure, it's great, but, you have to wait.

So, yes, it could definitely be more fun.

awaiting a sealed box bought on secondary market. I will post pulls this month.

Good: Extensive variety of rare and limited Refractors, autographs, and relics. Outstanding mix of inserts.

Bad: Cards are prone to scratches and imperfections.

The Bottom Line: 2013 Bowman Platinum is a solid product comprised of veterans, rookies, and prospects with crisp and exciting photos. The foil design is very appealing. The thick card stock adds a layer of premium quality to this product.

Card Design: 4.0/5.0
2013 Bowman Platinum delivers quality over quantity with a wide variety of beautiful eye-catching designs.

What has become the calling card for Bowman Platinum over the years is the ability to deliver an attractive product with little or no flaws. The base cards are similar to years past and standout above other 2013 releases.

The chase for the numbered parallels is as exciting as ever.

Cutting Edge Stars is a personal favorite. Their crisp edges and nearly perfect centering make them an exciting addition to 2013 Bowman Platinum.

The autographs have a solid layout, plenty of space between the player and card design. The autographed relics are a standout feature at one per box, but ,unfortunately, use stickers.

Checklist: 4.5/5.0
2013 Bowman Platinum Baseball is loaded with some of the best talent Major League Baseball has to offer. Besides the base set, the basic inserts are a lot of fun. The autographs are of exceptional quality. Collectors who purchase a box of 2013 Bowman Platinum can expect to pull two random prospect autographs and an autographed relic.

Value: 3.5/5.0
Topps has delivered a quality product once again, however the value is a gamble. The price tag of $100 dollars should be re-evaluated to a more suitable price in the area of $75-80 range. That being said, there is value to be had just maybe not at $100.

The Fun Factor: 5.0/5.0
Opening new product always inspires the collector in me to get involved in the chase of low numbered variants. This product is a blast.

Pulled a Beau Taylor auto /5 and a Lucas Giolito /10 Prospect Card. Hanging on to the Giolito for when he recovers from Tommy John and gets called up eventually

Does anyone know if Topps pulled the Ryan Braun from the blue sapphire Best Players of All-Time subset? I’ve busted 3 12-box cases, a retail case of racks and 20+ blasters and nada. Curious to know if it even exists.

J Hook and Justin – there are regular refractors, listed at 1:4 on the back of the pack. They are kind of hard to identify, but I’ve gotten the hang of it. Basically, the refractor version will have an embossed edge around the outline of the player and the background will be slightly more shiny/mirrored than the regular BPP cards. Take a look at your cards and see if you can find these.

Like the selection of young players and stars and the cards are very good looking. I’ve bought a lot of hobby and retail of this and getting a ton of duplicates without being able to complete the set, especially the veterans.

Would give this a 5 if not for the auto redemption cards. Surely Topps can do better than 2 redemption cards out of 3 graphs in my box. Other than that, this set is probably the best break for your money. Keep up the outstanding work Ryan, you are the best!

Thanks for the reply Justin! I thought there may have been a basic refractor parallel of the Chrome inserts, and my researching pics on ebay was confusing me even further. That clears it up for me well enough! All I know is I’m happy I pulled it:)

J Hook The Card number you provided means that the card is Bowman prospects chrome prospects card. It is one of the sets listed above. It is in a way a refractor however the Green, Blue, gold refractors are all serial numbered.

Hey all, I’m new to baseball cards (big hockey collector) and I grabbed 2 packs today from my LCS, pulled a Puig BPCP49…how does one tell if its the refractor version? Awesome cards though for sure, becoming a bigger baseball card fan with every pack I try:)

Pretty nice looking cards. I bought a box today and pulled a redemption for a “2013 AZL Fall League All-Star Memorabilia Item.” Any idea what that means?

TJ Sounds like you won a piece of equipment from the game — perhaps a hat, a ball or ??? Was a specific player mentioned?

Slightly disappointed that Puig is not in the base or prospect autograph sets. It looks like all of his autographs will be stickers unless the orange version is on card.

Still love the product overall.

Just pulled a Gold Cracked ice Jackie Bradley Jr. Good solid $10 card at a show. I pulled it from a retail box.

Off subject Ryan, but why does the Elite not hold or sale for as much? Just always wondered. I used to by a huge fan of Elite until I started seeing the value that they don’t hold. Why is that? They do seem like a cheaper made card but some good autos I see go for cheap??? Thanks

Josh Gibson Many collectors prefer MLB uniforms and logos. As you’ve noticed they are cheaper, which makes them a solid alternative for those with more limited budgets.

Very good looking cards. 2012 was my first
year for Platinum and This years Look even better. Like the Larger relic cards.
How much are the boxes going to be
is the question. The Musial Card is nice.
Rest in Peace Stan “The Man”.

Lee C Initial cost should be about the same as last year.

Without a doubt my favorite base cards for baseball came out of BP for 2012, and I have no doubts that the same will be for ’13.

I’ll probably only be able to afford a box or two throughout the season of this, but definitely looking forward to it.

Those jumbo relics look amazing.
