Review

2013-14 Topps Premier Gold Soccer Product Review

Reviewed by Trey Treutel

Good: Ten hits, big name players in autograph checklist, parallels offer good added value.

Bad: All sticker autographs, mostly one-color jersey pieces, low-end card stock, questionable quality control.

The Bottom Line: If you can stomach the cost, there is some great potential value in 2013-14 Topps Premier Gold. But sticker autographs and single-color jersey cards don’t scream high-end and only a few of the autograph subjects can recoup the value of the box.

Staff Rating:
3.8 / 5.0

Card Design: 2.5/5.0

2013-14 Topps Premier Gold Soccer keeps the card design very simple with a small team crest in the corner, a text box at the bottom, and a washed-out background. Simple can be either a good or bad thing, depending on your preference, but in a high-end release, it would have been nice for Topps to spend a little time and effort on giving the base cards a quality appearance. The cards look like something you would find in a low-end product. The card stock is incredibly thin and many of my base cards suffered from rough cuts, especially on the sides.

The various inserts feature subtle differences from the base cards, and are easy to miss if you are just looking for the hit in each pack. All the base inserts are virtually identical except for the title (Shot-Stoppers, Future Stars, etc.). I get that people care more about the hits, but I would rather they just remove the inserts if they are not going to make more of an attempt to actually add something to the product.

While they can be overdone in many products, parallels definitely help the non-hit portion of 2013-14 Topps Premier Gold Soccer. Although there are five different parallels, three are one-of-one versions. Collectors will find several Green parallels (#/99) in each box, and perhaps an Orange parallel (#/11). These parallels are obtainable, but do not flood the box and they add a nice splash of color along with a quality finish. Due to this parallel moderation, values have remained strong across the board.

Ten hits per box sounds great on paper, but when the majority of relic cards are penny-sized, single-color jersey pieces, and all autographs are stickers, it is very easy to come out of the $200 experience with a disappointed feeling.

Checklist: 4.0/5.0

Set builders might want to look elsewhere, because even with perfect collation, it will take at least eight boxes to make one 200-card base set. However, there is a good mix from the entire EPL. Each of the teams currently in the league have 10 base cards, so there is some added appeal for team collectors.

The real draw of the checklist is the autograph options. With only 34 total signers, there is a solid shot at some big-time names.

Value: 4.0/5.0

Despite the many shortcomings in regards to design, value is one main area where this product delivers. Each box has basically a 1:3 shot at Cristiano Ronaldo, Frank Lampard, Gareth Bale, Mikel Arteta, Pelé or Steven Gerrard. Most fútbol collectors would love to have those odds, and then add in some of the other notable autograph options, like Ashley Cole, Ashley Young, Gianfranco Zola, Jack Wilshere, Joe Hart, and Tim Howard, and it is clear that there is plenty of value to be found.

Also, while the plain jersey cards are generally nothing special, the cards with patch pieces, jumbo relics and multi-player relics have proven to be quite valuable despite the ambiguous “player-worn” classification.

The Fun Factor: 4.5/5.0

Value can immediately make a product seem more fun, but beyond that, the overall design of this product is geared toward an enjoyable break. To begin, each pack comes in its own mini-box, which allows/forces collectors to take more time opening each box and pack, and the excitement begins to build. Combine that with a hit-per-pack format and the possibility for a Cristiano Ronaldo or Pelé autograph, and it becomes easy to see how this can be a fun break.

There`s just not enough quality in the autograph checklist. And this is from a British Topps collector of baseball football and soccer. Admittedly I`m a bummed out Spurs fan (Bale) but at $200+ a box, there really should be a higher percentage of elite hits. And there are PLENTY of world class players in the EPL. Seems a little half-assed. Pele`s never ever played in England, wtf???

Where are the legendary coaches and ex players?

Fernando
Fernando

Fair enough, point to you on the Pel Allen & Ginter jersey.

Gerry Thompson
Gerry Thompson

I also thought the same Portlaw, I know companies have said that one in the past, however this says on the front of the card:

‘Game used memorabilia’

And on the back of the card:

‘Used memorabilia of Pele’

To me that says that Topps has sold this as Game used memorabilia of Pele. As a collector I thought this would be one of the most important soccer cards ever released so understand my disappointment that the card is not.

Fernando
Fernando

As far as Pel’s Topps A&G jersey cards go, I’m not aware of them being advertised as game-worn but your point is valid nonetheless as it would be nice if they were game-used rather than event-used as seems the case here. However to say that Topps’ previous upmarket soccer attempts have plummeted in value is just plain false as can be seen in the evidence provided in one of my posts above.

Portlaw
Portlaw

It could have been event worn. For example wore it at a football event in 2007 and not match worn

Gerry Thompson

To Fernando
I am a collector and excitedly purchased a number of the Topps (AG) Pele cards.
When the first came through and the material was obviously not from Pele’s era I was beyond disappointed. The material looked wrong, it was synthetic and the pattern didn’t look like being of the era of a Pele international game jersey. The material did however match with a Brazil 2007 jersey.

When a collector acquires a game worn jersey card l don’t think its too much to expect that it originates from the footballer on the card. For me, this card is the latest in a string of disappointments, but you seem to be asking why I’m cross? Is it OK then for a game worn jersey card to have material which has no relevance to the player on the card? If you can find a match to this material with a pre 1971 Brazil jersey I’d be very pleased.

Fernando
Fernando

To Gerry Thompson: Why do you keep badmouthing Topps’ soccer products with your lies? – He’s on several message forums with the same anti-Topps comments, google it to see for yourself – What in the World did they do to you?

Gerry Thompson
Gerry Thompson

Another Pele card where it is not supposed to be.

Also the Pele (Topps AG) game worn relic card. Must be a Topps fake, the material is from a 2007 Brazilian jersey so how can it be when Pele retired from international football in 1971?

Ryan Cracknell
Ryan Cracknell

Gerry Thompson Relics should be taken with a grain of salt. Most nowadays, no matter the company, come with a vague disclaimer about their origins. While it’s no-doubt game-used, the type of game could be up for debate.

Actually this product will be available in the UK. This is according to some reliable posters over on a UK based card forum.

Adam
Adam

Thanks for the info. I very disappointed
as the premier league is bigger here but i can see why because this type of product has never been tried over here.

Adam
Adam

Will this be available in the UK? I am a big NFL fan and i have american football cards. The cards here are made for 6-11 year old kids and are cheap pieces of plastics. I have really wanted a product like this and i think it would sell in the UK. If it isn’t sold over here i will be every disappointed

Ryan Cracknell
Ryan Cracknell

Adam It’s looks like it’s being marketed to the North American crowd so it’s unlikely it’ll be readily available in the UK. You should be able to get boxes through places like eBay, like NFL sets, but not easily like locally distributed sets.

Ilia
Ilia

The price is bad but the set good

Fernando
Fernando

Your point about parallels is a valid one, I’m concerned about that as well since Topps went way too far with the parallels in 2013 MLS and the supply quickly outgrew the demand. But one must also keep in mind that the Premier League is far more popular than MLS. Also there isn’t a great supply of EPL autos out there so as long as Topps doesn’t overproduce then the value of the cards should hold up.

Paul
Paul

The product mix of the upcoming Topps soccer release follows the same pattern as MLS with multiple parallel cards, I think on my last count there were 8 different variations of parallels of some kind for each card released! this kind of ruins a special being special.

At $20 pack this product has a greater height to fall from than the recent Topps MLS cards price collapse.

Topps MLS soccer cards have poor resale value, not soccer in general and especially not Topps Premier League cards.

I should have been more specific and made clear that I’m only referring to Topps’ Premier League products (Which is what this upcoming product is about) and not Topps MLS which I’m well aware it has been a massive failure in terms of secondary market value.

Topps has pretty much killed MLS autograph card’s values by oversaturating with their infinite parallels and such. But then again that is MLS and it can in no way compare to the Premier League which arguably the best league in the World.

In any case here are some links to numbers which support my assertion that Topps’ Premier League cards do have solid value. These are all from ebay some of which I actually sold myself.

Keep in mind that most of these cards are not of superstar players, many of them are even “scrubs” yet the lowest valued card is a $9.99 autograph card.

Topps soccer resale values are proven to be notoriously poor, that is why others provide the proof/facts with links about 90% drop in Topps soccer autograph and patch values.

With Topps Pele relics going for $10, this is a worry.
“If the price is very cheap then it is almost certainly a fake” – David Russell

The guy(s) who are posting the links are well off base with their ridiculous comments. First off Topps’ previous mid to higher-end releases have held up well in the value department. Autos and jersey cards of even “scrubs” sell fairly well. Also, Futera are well known to produce fake autograph cards. For those who aren’t aware, google it. In fact I suspect one of the person(s) commenting on here may be a notorious Futera shill who goes around badmouthing Topps products.

As for the product itself I honestly think it has a chance to be really great. As long as they keep autos/relics of the scrubs from teams like Cardiff, Palace, Norwich and Hull to a minimum and give the people the big names they want, then this will be a success. The preliminary auto checklist floating around on the internet right now is a promising start but needs some more star power with the likes of Rooney, Surez, Chicharito and zil yet to sign on to the product.

My 2.

Topps has been releasing upmarket Premier League Soccer cards with autographs and relic cards for many years, this is just a few of the checklists, there are more.

Collectors have got their fingers burnt with Topps’ attempts at serious soccer releases, not just because values are poor anyway but Topps discounts their soccer cards soon after release which makes what we’re holding worse. Most serious soccer card collectors have moved on to the other brands (Panini, Futera and Upper Deck historically), these other cards, both feature the top footballers playing in England and seem to hold their values reasonably well

The above 2 comments are a little unfair to Topps. Whilst I agree that the end result of collecting Topps upmarket soccer collections is as said above, a little more information needs to be added to give Topps credit with soccer collections where it is due.
Topps openly promotes that its Soccer success is with the 6 – 10 year old age group, and in that target group Topps are very successful with their soccer cards. Later this year they are completing a major tour here in the UK for English Premier League Soccer cards with their Moshi Monsters.

However I can still only give Topps a 1 star as they are having an identity crisis if they believe by repeating what they have done for some 15 years failing with serious Soccer cards that this time it will be any different.

Paul The big difference here is that it’s an EPL set designed with North American collectors in mind. From what I understand, there is a fair bit of difference between what’s working in the UK and in the USA. For example, sports games like Attax and Adrenylyn XL seem to be big everywhere but the US. We shall see. I personally think it’s early to say whether a product will be great or stink. There will be some collectors though who will be happy to be able to chase an EPL set for the first time in several years as I don’t think Upper Deck made one for a long time over here.

I Have collected Topps Premium Soccer for 12 years, this is one collection that I will not be pre ordering.
Why ?
1) The top footballers in the world are no longer in the English Premier Laegue (Messi, Neymar etc…).
2) Topps ALWAYS dumps soccer after you and I buy them. For example, this was sold for $35 by Topps then they sold through their Topps Ebay shop for $3

3) The pack break is a complete value failure. At $20 a pack and the top memorabilia/relic card you can expect to get is a Pele at $10
http://www.ebay.com/itm/PELE-2013-Allen-Ginter-Game-Used-/141043829548?pt=US_Baseball&hash=item20d6de0b2c
but most probably a 99 cent card
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Steven-Lenhart-2013-Topps-MLS-Game-Worn-Jersey-Relic-Card-/261260114112?pt=US_Soccer_Trading_Cards&hash=item3cd450f8c0
The highest value autograph footballer playing in the Premier League right now (and he is expected to be leaving soon ) is Bale, Topps Authentic autograph goes for $9
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Topps-authentic-autographGareth-Bale-mint-/281143671028?pt=UK_SportsMemorabilia_Football_Memorabilia_ET&hash=item417577f8f4
As for a special hit, lets say a 1 of 1, the latest from Topps Soccer are going for $3
http://www.ebay.com/itm/2013-Topps-MLS-Soccer-Walter-Vilchez-Black-Printing-Plate-1-1-167-/151094577605?pt=US_Hockey_Trading_Cards&hash=item232df049c5
This is a most definite sit on the sidelines collection, wait for the Ebay bargains.

Topps tried upmarket soccer for many years previous, values crashed, Topps dumped product, prepare for same.

You can keep the cards of the back up keeper from Crystal Palace and jersey relics of the defensive backs from Sunderland. It’s like getting a jersey card of any current Houston Astros player. I’ll take a few more RVP, Suarez and Ba. Let me know when you want to trade. Topps just needs to make a world’s top 200 set and we’d be all good.

Brizzle

The EPL has 20 clubs. On a game day, this means that 16 players per club are on the team. That’s 320 players. This set includes 100 players, and its over $200/box? What’s the point? Do I need another Robin Van Persie card? This seems more like a money-grab than a real attempt to sell soccer cards to soccer card collectors…

Eric
Eric

Looks like $200+ for a box. I’ll still partake.

Mike: Love it or hate it there is big money in the sport. Just check out how much NBC bid to get the rights to the EPL. Soccer stars are international cultural icons and the EPL is loaded with them. Now, if Topps would include La Liga, Serie A, Ligue 1 and Bundesliga top players, you’d have a buying frenzy aht that price point. This product will move and move quickly. Just check out the Robin van Persie and Pele autos in the Ginter product.

Luke

So excited for this! Exactly what I’ve wanted from the soccer hobby. Hopefully <$150 a box.

Luke I cannot stand soccer. I mean, I HATE soccer. But I love that Topps is going in this direction as their MLS and English Premier League licenses is the best chance the hobby has at cultivating an international soccer trading card collector base. I see this as being a great thing for the hobby and am excited that people who are soccer fans are starting to have some quality trading card options.
