It would have been easy for Panini to let its hockey card license ride into the sunset once it was announced Upper Deck had secured an exclusive starting in 2014-15. However, Panini's swan song has some of the sport's nicest (and priciest) rookie cards of all-time. 2013-14 Panini National Treasures Hockey Rookie Treasures combine a strong design, on-card autographs, over-sized patches and low numbering. The result is an instant-classic that has been generating some big numbers.

Thanks to the double-rookie crop, the Rookie Treasures checklist is big. Nearly 100 players are in the subset. Numbered to the main set, all are rookie cards.

While the signatures and patches get most of the accolades, it's the card stock that sets the 2013-14 National Treasures Hockey rookies apart. These stand out against other high-end hockey cards and National Treasures rookies from basketball and football. They're done on a milky surface that adds texture. You can also see the outline of the entire memorabilia swatch, not just what's showing in the window.

Early sales of National Treasures Hockey Rookie Treasures have been very strong. The first Nathan MacKinnon to land on eBay was quickly snatched up for a whopping $8,200. However, this appears to be an extreme outlier as others since have sold for less than half that. Still, those are very impressive numbers no matter how you look at it.

Alex Galchenyuk, Aleksander Barkov and Thomas Hertl have also been among the big sellers, though none are coming close to MacKinnon's numbers.

2013-14 Panini National Treasures Hockey does have some redemptions including 13 Rookie Treasures. Despite losing their NHL license, Panini has pledged that all redemptions will be honored. These have an expiry date of February 27, 2016.
