Product Details
2013-14 Fleer Showcase Hockey brings a lot of the ideas from Fleer Retro and turns them down a touch to create a product that's accessible to a broader audience. It's highlighted by plenty of nostalgia-fueled content and a bigger focus on rookies than Fleer Retro did last year. Every box comes with three total autograph and memorabilia cards including an autographed patch rookie.
The 2013-14 Fleer Hot Prospects base set has 100 cards. Veterans have several memorabilia parallels, all of which come with low serial numbers: Red Glow Jersey (#/36), White Hot Patch Tier 1 (#/18) and White Hot Patch Tier 2 (#/9).
The product's rookie content begins with Hot Prospects Auto Patch cards, which are inserted at least one per box. These come in two rarity levels. Tier 1 cards are more common, numbered to 399. Rarer Tier 2 players are limited to 199 numbered copies each. Both have Glove or Strap Red Glow parallels that are numbered to 27 or less. White Hot Patch cards are limited to 3. Collectors can also find Hot Prospects Autos (#/149). These have Red Glow (#/27) and White Hot (#/9) parallels as well.
The Hot Prospects theme continues with Hot Prospects Duos (#/299) and Trio (#/399), which also have Red Glow (#/27) and White Hot (#/9) versions.
Rookies also appear on a couple of retro-themed inserts. SkyBox Premium Prospects are numbered to 299. Parallels are Star Rubies (#/50) and Sparkling Diamond (#/5). Fleer Ultra Rookies (#/499) bring back another familiar brand. Red Medallion parallels (#/99) are new but Platinum Medallion (#/25) cards should bring back some memories for long-time collectors. Both SkyBox Premium and Fleer Ultra have veteran versions as well.
Every box of 2013-14 Fleer Showcase Hockey has a pair of Metal Universe cards. With that comes Precious Metal Gems parallels. These come in three colors: Red (#/75), Blue (#/25) and Green (#/10).
Another popular set from the 1990s (and 2012-13 Fleer Retro Hockey) is back. Jambalaya inserts are once again extremely tough, landing 1:180 packs.
Additional memorabilia cards include Stitches (1:30 packs) and Uniformity (1:45 packs), which is a dual memorabilia set. Both stick with parallels from other memorabilia sets with Red Glow and White Hot versions. White Hot Stitches and Uniformity cards have jersey tags.

2013-14 Fleer Showcase Hockey Product Review

Good: It's fun, lots of quality content from non-hits, nice nostalgia kick.
Bad: Bland base set, dual rookie cards.
The Bottom Line: As far as fun goes, 2013-14 Fleer Showcase is one of the sport’s most enjoyable products of the year. It’s loaded with rookie content that actually lives the hype of the double-rookie class label. With that, there’s plenty of retro content as well that harkens back to the wild times of the 1990s.
Card Design: 3.5/5.0
Just like a lot of sets from the 1990s, both ends of the design spectrum can be found in 2013-14 Fleer Showcase Hockey. Thankfully, the majority of it is on the strong end.
What is likely to garner a lot of the product’s attention are the Hot Prospects Rookie Auto Patch cards. Although on the busy side, the gold motif adds some elegance. The gold foil is used sparingly and doesn’t go overboard. The sticker autographs are a drawback, but if they must be used, at least they’re clear and done on a white background so they don’t draw too much attention to themselves.
The base set is my least favorite part of the product. They far too busy with lots of different sections. Colors cut in and out. The gold coloring is overpowering. Players just sort of blend into the background. With so many other components in the product, they’re really are an afterthought to me.
My favorite cards in 2013-14 Fleer Showcase Hockey are the Metal Universe inserts. They are a rehash from the past, but their unique look is a lot more interesting. I’ll admit, there’s probably some nostalgia talking there as well. Adding to this are the Precious Metal Gems. Not only are they some of the brightest cards you’re ever going to find, but the background have a trippy hypnotic thing going on. PMGs might not be for everyone but I love these.

The double-rookie class has been trumpeted by both Upper Deck and Panini months before the first 2013-14 products hit. And while the player selection has been strong and there’s lots of future potential, I’d say that the execution of the double-rookie crop has been somewhat disappointing in a lot of products. From early releases that were really only last year’s rookies to some other sets that are just plain bland, I haven’t been as excited about many products like I was expecting. 2013-14 Fleer Showcase lives up to the hype though. Not only is there lots of rookie content, but it’s good rookie content. It means that you actually have a decent chance at landing a top player in some form. It might not be an autographed patch every time, but even the less “valuable” spots like the Skybox inserts are compelling because they look good and they’re relatively limited.
Fleer Showcase has a lot of depth. It speaks to Upper Deck’s ability to spread limited content around so that you’re bound to get something interesting on a per-box basis more times than not. Here, it’s with the several levels of basic inserts. Individually, they’re tough. But put it all together and there are solid chances of getting one.

I love that this product isn’t all about the autographs and memorabilia cards. In fact, I hardly even think of them. Sure, they’re in here, but it goes beyond the signatures and jersey pieces. There’s plenty of content outside the hits that’s both interesting and draws interest from other collectors if you’re looking to trade or sell. I wish there were more products like this. Autographs and memorabilia can make it tough to get great players much of the time. With basic inserts, it’s a lot easier to control the checklist and have more top-tier players. Fleer Showcase pretty much nails it.
The Fun Factor: 4.5/5.0
I had a blast busting Fleer Showcase. Every pack offered something different. I like that the designs are bold and take me back to crazier hobby times. There’s some good nostalgia in that. More importantly, the product proves that there is a lot more than just signatures and relics. In fact, the box I busted had just two hits instead of the expected three. That didn’t bother me. I’m assuming it was replaced by on of the many interesting inserts, which is more appealing to me than a lower-tier signature or nondescript relic.

Very nice mix of cards. Nearly half complete base set and a nice mix of insert cards. Got some nice rookies Strome /499, Jones /299, Metal Universe Emerald Matt Duchene PMG /10, and my big hits were Hot prospects patch / auto Ryan Murray /375 and Galchenyuk White Hot Stiches Tag 1/3.
Very nice box of hits for me and definitely got my moneys worth.
