Many collectors busting 2012 Upper Deck Goodwin Champions are finding a surprise that wasn't announced ahead of time or mentioned on the checklist released by the card maker. Several 2012 Upper Deck Goodwin Champions variation short prints are popping up, adding another chase for base set and variation collectors.
The cards are easy to identify. They are horizontal base cards that have expanded images, often with additional people. A common theme on several shows the athlete meeting the President of the United States at the White House. These include Hakeem Olajuwon and Sidney Crosby. Another interesting variation, particularly for wrestling fans, is that of Karl Malone. The horizontal version of his card has an image from his short stint with WCW back in 1998. The card has Malone in a confrontation with Hulk Hogan. Dennis Rodman stands in the background.
2012 Upper Deck Goodwin Champions uses painted images for its base cards. This carries over to the variations as well. As with any artwork, some of the paintings are better than others. However, most show a good amount of detail and capture the feel of the subject matter. If nothing else, they give the cards a distinct look.
Upper Deck has yet to confirm either the number of Goodwin Champions variations or their insertion rates. They appear to be falling about one per hobby case, though.
