Hunting with 2012 Goodwin Champions Animal Kingdom Patch Cards

The 2012 Upper Deck Goodwin Champions Animal Kingdom Patch Cards have collectors hunting once again. Featuring embroidered patches of all sorts of animals, they represent a daunting chase. But it's a chase many are making.

It's hard to predict what will be a hit in the hobby. But it's these experiments that help keep collecting interesting. Even with the eclectic mix of cards that came in 2011 Upper Deck Goodwin Champions, the Animal Kingdom Patch Cards stood out. They were different, tough to find, attractive (to many) and rewarded those who wanted to go for the set. And rather than just randomly assigning short prints for the sake of short prints, the tiers made sense. The rarer the animal is in real life, the rarer the card.

Although these cards don't appeal to everyone, they have developed a passionate following. The 2012 Upper Deck Goodwin Champions Animal Kingdom Patch Cards are proving to be some of the hottest in the set. On the secondary market, common patches are hovering around $20. When you get down to the rarest ones, prices move into the hundreds. Overall, Animal Kingdom Patch Cards fall 1:64 hobby packs.

The 2012 Upper Deck Goodwin Champions Animal Kingdom Patch Card checklist adds 100 new animals to the set. Numbering starts at 101, adding a sense of continuity. The cards are arranged into seven tiers. Each tier becomes increasingly tough to find. Like last year, tiers are determined based on how endangered, if at all, the animal is.

The first 49 cards in the set are classified as "Least Concern." Falling 1:85 packs as a group, the chances of getting any individual card in the tier is greater than 1:4,000 packs. On the other hand, individual "Extinct" and "Mythical" patch cards fall 1:47,841 packs. That means for every one of the rarest cards, there are about 12 of the most common.
