Product Review
2012 Rittenhouse Warehouse 13 Season 3 Product Review
Reviewed by Ryan Cracknell
Good: Three hits per pack, continuity in design, several well-known guest star autographs notable for things outside the show, limited print run.
Bad: Autograph repetition from previous sets, tough to build a base set.
The Bottom Line: With just 200 boxes, there's no denying the rarity of 2012 Rittenhouse Warehouse 13 Season 3. On its own, it's an extremely strong set for the premium crowd, delivering an autograph and two costume cards in every pack. But with several of the key signers repeats from previous releases, it's starting to take its toll on the overall value. This is especially magnified by the justifiably high price per pack. For those who haven't done any of the previous Warehouse 13 sets, they'll like have less of an issue with the repetition. Collectors who have been with the franchise since the beginning may find themselves starting to tire of the repetition.
Card Design: 3.5/5.0
Sticking with what's worked in the past, 2012 Rittenhouse Warehouse 13 Season maintains the same designs as the first two sets. Base cards have a horizontal design that's clean. Cards are printed on high-quality glossy stock, which seems appropriate for a premium pack product. The photos are sharp and do a good job of capturing both the characters and the special effects.
Once again, autographs come in two designs, although most use one based on a handheld device from the show. The signer's face is shown through a small circular window, leaving generous space for the signature. Three autographs use a more traditional design.
The best looking cards in the set are the costume relics. The swatch is integrated nicely by being placed inside a crate, which is extremely appropriate for the show. A large shot showing the original costume on screen further adds to the overall visual appeal.
Artifact inserts return. These unique looking cards fold out to show and describe featured items from the show. They're quirky and appropriate, but, now in their third set, growing a little tiresome. That said, if you view the franchise as an ongoing series, it needs to be there. Perhaps, then, a new insert could have been added to freshen things up a little.
Checklist: 4.0/5.0
For these premium sets, I look to the autographs first. Rittenhouse has done a fantastic job at getting most of the main actors to sign once again. Better still is the fact that there are also several notable guest stars with autographs. The Bionic Woman, Lindsay Wagner, is in the set, as is Jeri Ryan and Kate Mulgrew, who are both famous for their major roles in the Star Trek Universe.
The extensive list of costume cards also ensures strong variety. They also focus on main characters. This is good for fans of the show who may not be, traditionally, card collectors as it should promise a key card from one of the show's primary cast.
Although the base set is small, a massive checklist isn't required. With just 13 episodes to draw from, each is summarized over two cards. That said, it's extremely tough to put a set together as there are just a pair of base cards in every pack.
Value: 3.0/5.0
Rittenhouse does a good job of squeezing a lot into every pack, but collectors shouldn't expect huge returns from a monetary perspective. The limited nature of the product ensures a good level of rarity throughout. The serial numbering of the costume cards and Artifacts inserts further bolsters this perception. At the same time, there isn't a lot that feels new here. The designs are the same and the composition is familiar. This waters down the value of not only this release but the ones that came before it as well. Repeat signers aren't a bad thing when they're genuine superstars. But that's not the case with Warehouse 13. While there are lots of respected actors, none are household names.
The Fun Factor: 3.0/5.0
If you're a fan of Warehouse 13 and this is your first go at cards from the show, it's doubtful you'll be disappointed. All of the cards live up to the "premium" label. They capture the key parts of the show. At the same time, those who have been with these cards from the beginning may have a hard time getting into the repetitive aspects. The guest star autographs help but may not go quite far enough.
