2012 Panini Black Football Rookie Signature Materials Prime Guide

2012 Panini Black Football Rookie Signature Materials Prime Guide

The name and look may be familiar to many collectors, but that doesn't make 2012 Panini Black Football any less striking. One of the best aspects of the set are the Rookie Signature Materials Prime inserts. They come with a gold autograph and a decent-sized player-worn jersey piece -- often a patch. The horizontal cards further standout with the dark theme that runs throughout the release.

All 2012 Panini Black Football Rookie Signature Materials Prime cards are numbered to 349. The 35-card checklist encompasses those that participated in the 2012 NFL PLAYERS Rookie Premiere. This includes such top-end rookies as Andrew Luck, Robert Griffin III, Russell Wilson and Doug Martin.

What's interesting is that because these are numbered outside of the base set, they're not official rookie cards. 2012 Panini Black Football does have 100 rookie cards and they are autographed. However, none of the players in the Rookie Signature Materials Prime set are a part of the main checklist. So no official Luck or RG3 rookies in the set, just inserts.

Like other black-designed cards released from various companies this year, these cards do seem to be somewhat condition sensitive. Any dings and nicks along the edges or in the corners show up strongly. Also, in some instances, the holofoil accents used in the names and border around the jersey swatch have peeled. So if you're buying online, be sure to look closely at the images and bid accordingly. If they're not clear, shoot the seller an email and ask for another image. That said, while some are coming out of packs a little less than perfect, it doesn't look as widespread or severe as some other sets.

Below is a complete gallery of the set, including images and team info. Please note, we did not include images any of the seven redemption cards in the set because plain white cards aren't the prettiest thing to look at.
