2009 Topps UFC Round 2 Review
The Good: An incredible assortment of base cards of the top mixed martial art fighters, complete with tons of great potential autograph and relic pulls.
The Bad: The price tag is a bit steep and the relic cards are not in line with the high quality of the other cards in 2009 Topps UFC Round 2.
The Bottom Line: 2009 Topps UFC Round 2 is a strong and fitting follow up to Topps' wildly successful UFC debut earlier this year. If you have even the slightest interest in Mixed Martial Arts and can afford the $160 price tag, do yourself a favor and scoop up a box of 2009 Topps UFC Round 2 before the market dries up and the price skyrockets.
Each of the following subgrades is out of a possible 10 points, with 10 being the best possible score and 1 being the worst possible score:
Overall Score: 9.0 (Outstanding)
Design (8.2)
The base cards feature a nice, if not overly impressive, overall design. Several of the key insert sets, most notably Bloodlines, Heroes of the Octagon, and UFC Undisputed, are extraordinarily well delivered, fantastic looking cards. The standard parallel cards are a bit disappointing as they are reminiscent of the thick, difficult-to-store, easy-to-damage Bowman gold parallels of years past.
Having said all that, where 2009 Topps UFC Round 2 really shines from a design standpoint is with its excellent photography. Topps has really captured the essence of the Octagon and the intense action of the fights within it.
Value (7.9)
2009 Topps UFC Round 2 is packed with goodies, but they do not come cheap. Unlike the majority of higher end sports card products which feature one or two packs per box, 2009 Topps UFC Round 2 features a robust 20-packs per box. With each box yielding roughly 2 autographs, 2 relic cards, 20 inserts/parallels, and well over 100 base cards, Topps UFC Round Two is like a perfectly cooked T-bone at the end of a long, hard day of work - satisfying.
The icing on the cake would have been the inclusion of a 3rd autograph per box at the expense of the 2 relics. Maybe I'm alone on this, but I would prefer to pull 3 autographs over 2 autographs and 2 relics any day.
Checklist (9.4)
The 2009 Topps UFC Round 2 checklist features a great assortment of MMA stars and future Hall of Famers. Joining them are an assortment of well known UFC personalities, which turned out to be a nice touch. All in all 2009 Topps UFC Round 2 has about as strong a checklist as one could realistically hope for.
Enjoyability (9.2)
The growth of Mixed Martial Arts over the last decade has been staggering, and it shows no signs of letting up anytime soon. The first ever UFC Fan Expo, which took place in Las Vegas over the summer, revealed a startlingly large collector following for the sport as well. The success of Mixed Martial Arts has been made possible through the UFC's carefully calculated marketing campaigns and business partnerships. Their deal with Topps looks to be no different, as evidenced by the high quality of both 2009 Topps UFC Round 1 and Round 2.
I am by no means a hardcore UFC fan. I started following Mixed Martial Arts back in the late 90's for a year or two, but then lost touch with the sport until recently. My level of interest in it has been building steadily over the last year and reviewing 2009 Topps UFC Round 2 has peaked my interest even more, so much so that I am seriously considering ordering the next big UFC paperview event.
If you don't like fighting sports, then don't expect 2009 Topps UFC Round 2 to magically change that. However, if you have (or have had) any interest in Mixed Martial Arts and have $160 to spend on cards, you owe it to yourself to give 2009 Topps UFC Round 2 a shot.
