User Rating:

While the World Series has been the focus of plenty of cards over the years, they're usually relegated to subset and insert cards. 2003 Topps Tribute World Series Edition Baseball is a notable exception. And a high-end one at that. Highlighted by a memorabilia card in every pack, it also has a strong design and relics from several all-time greats.

2003 Topps Tribute World Series Edition Baseball reaches deep into baseball's history. Released in conjunction with the trophy's 100th anniversary, players go back to its early days. This isn't in just the base set either. Relics include the likes of Eddie Collins, Hank Greenberg, Rogers Hornsby and Edd Roush. There are also lots of baseball legends, such as Babe Ruth, Jackie Robinson, Lou Gehrig, Honus Wagner and Ty Cobb.

The base set has 150 cards. The first 130 focus on the first World Series appearance of various players. The final 20 are part of a Fall Classics subset that highlight memorable October moments. All have Gold parallels numbered to 100.

As is tradition with all Topps Tribute sets, the designs are highlighted by premium glossy foil and gold foil accents. It's a distinct look that reaches beyond the base set and into the relics and autographs as well.

Tribute Relics has most of the set's relics. The majority of the 53 cards on the checklist are numbered to 425. This includes Ruth, Robinson and some more of baseball's royalty. There are a handful of short prints that are limited to 50 copies. Eight players also have autographed versions that feature on-card signatures.

Multi-player relic cards can be found in Memorable Match-Ups and two- and three-swatch Team Tribute Relics.

Subway Series Fan Fare cards are inserted one per box. These have a subway token embedded in them.

Series Signatures Relics highlight some of the best World Series performances with a dual relic and an autograph.

2003 Topps Tribute World Series Edition wasn't all that plentiful to begin with. Today, finding specific cards can be an exercise in patience since supply has largely dried up. Given the postseason theme, many of the cards have broader appeal beyond player collectors. They can also boost team collections and general high-end collectors as well.

Ryan is a former member of The Cardboard Connection Writing Staff.   His collecting origins began with winter bike rides to the corner store, tossing a couple of quarters onto the counter and peddling home with a couple packs of O-Pee-Chee hockey in his pocket. Today, he continues to build sets, go after inserts with cool technologies, chase Montreal Expos and finish off his John Jaha master collection.

I’ve seen a few of these examples up close and personal. Unfortunately, I stopped collecting back in 2000, and only recently started up the hobby again this year. Seems like I missed out on a lot of amazing cards in the past 15 years.

I was reintroduced to collecting about a year ago, after quite a long absence. This series looks fantastic and I will try and collect a few. One concern – and I hate to even ask – how do we know if the game-used bat cards contain a piece of an actual game-used bat from the featured player?

Nothing is 100% certain. You either believe Topps or you don’t.
