1996-97 Topps Chrome basketball ushered in a new era for sports cards. Although the mystery "chrome" formula debuted earlier in 1996 Topps Chrome Baseball, it was 96-97 Topps Chrome Basketball that ultimately marked the birth of the chromie. A "chromie" is a collector that is drawn to the shiny allure that is Topps and Bowman Chrome, no matter the sport.
