When it comes to comic book-inspired TV shows, few are as iconic as The Incredible Hulk. Running for five seasons and a few made-for-TV movies, it has lived on in reruns and through DVD. 1979 Topps Incredible Hulk trading cards bring both the excitement and the cheese that made the show great. The result is one of the more memorable sets of the era that continues to be popular today.
The base set has 88 cards. Not surprisingly, the majority of them focus on the big green behemoth that made Lou Ferrigno a star (and gave him enough star power to appear on Celebrity Apprentice more than 30 years later). The show isn't known for is groundbreaking special effects. They may have been passable at the time, but the cheese factor of the show really shows through on many of the cards.
Green is a major motif in the design of both the cards and stickers. Base cards have green borders. Images from the show are displayed with a jagged frame. A yellow caption, card number and copyright info are all at the bottom of the card. Backs are a mix of puzzle pieces and "TV Facts" that offer plenty of trivia on the show and its stars.
As with most Topps entertainment sets of the era, every pack of 1979 Topps Incredible Hulk comes with a sticker. There are 22 in the set. These have a thick green outer border and a yellow inner border. Select stickers have a die-cut image and are further embellished with lightning bolts in the background.
Because of the green borders, any sort of blemish shows. Centering can also be an issue. So those looking for a truly top condition set may have to exercise some patience.
1979 Topps Incredible Hulk is by no means rare, but it isn't the easiest set to find from the era either. Prices reflect this. It's not terribly expensive, but it's unlikely you'll find the set in closeout sales either. It helps also that the show can still be found in circulation and the Hulk continues to be popular in both comics and on the screen.
