1975 Topps Football CardsBrand: Topps Football
For the third straight year, Topps issued a 528-card football set in 1975. For the most part, except for the design, it was quite similar to what the company had been putting out for the past couple of years: airbrushed game-actions shots, sideline photos and the occasional posed pictures of years past. As a monopoly, Topps wasn't really itching to go out of its way when it figured it already had a good formula in place.
Card fronts feature a large player photo, with a banner underneath that appears to be flying. The team name is inside the banner, with the conference (AFC or NFC) after the fold. A helmet icon at the end of the banner contains the player's position, and his name stretches across the bottom. The card is surrounded with a white border. The backs are vertically oriented and designed to look like the end of a playing field. The scoreboard at the top contains the card number, as well as the player's name, team, position and vital stats. Underneath the goalpost is a biography and a year-by-year statistics review.
Again, there were several subsets. Cards #1-6 featured the 1974 statistical leaders in each conference. Cards #201-225 showcased the All-Pro players in each conference by their position. Cards #351-356 spotlighted record breakers from the previous season, and #452-460 was a separate highlight series featuring standout players of '74. The final three cards of the set (#526-528) featured the conference champs and Super Bowl winner. Additionally, there were two separate cards commemorating George Blanda's career.
Joe Theismann is featured on his first NFL card after playing for a few seasons in Canada. Other notable rookies include Mel Blount, Dan Fouts, Lynn Swann, Cliff Branch, Charlie Waters, Cliff Harris, Rocky Bleier and Drew Pearson.
