User Rating:

When Topps arrived on the hockey card scene as direct competition, Parkhurst limited itself to two teams for its hockey set. However, 1960-61 Parkhurst Hockey saw the company pick up a new team. With that, they split the six teams in the NHL evenly with Topps and basically established the format for the rest of the company's future sets.

1960-61 Parkhurst Hockey card fronts feature a player image superimposed against a solid-colored background. The background color is team-based: the Montreal Canadiens have yellow backgrounds, the Toronto Maple Leafs reddish orange and the Detroit Red Wings blue. A black box below the player contains his name and a card number. A white border surrounds the entire card.

The backs are printed in blue ink and feature a red team logo underneath the text. The player's name appears at the top, followed by his vital stats, his previous season's numbers and a biography in English. That is followed by a French translation of that info.
There are 61 cards in all, and the set is mostly subdivided by team. The Maple Leafs run from 1 through 18, the Red Wings show up on cards 19 to 34 and the Canadiens are featured on cards 35 through 60. Cards 56 through 59 have three players, and one final Red Wing is included as card 61.

The key rookie in the set is John McKenzie, but the return of Red Wings players make the cards of Gordie Howe and Terry Sawchuk prized as well. The set also features the final card of Maurice Richard.
