Looking back at the hobby's past, 2016 Topps Heritage Baseball centers on 1967 Topps. Fueled by nostalgia, the retro-themed release includes one hit per box.

Featuring the 1967 design, the base set includes 425 cards along with 75 short prints. Red Backs are parallels that add red to the card backs for the entire base checklist. There are also Mini (#/100) and Chrome parallels that extend to 100 of the base cards. Chrome offers multiple options, including Refractors (#/567), Black Refractors (#/67), and hobby-only Gold Refractors (#/5). Hot Box Refractors are only found in special boxes.

Continuing a consistent theme from Heritage Baseball, Throwback Uniform Variations, Action Image Variations and Team Name Color Variations offer differences from the base cards for select players and much tougher odds.

Several inserts add to the collecting appeal for set collectors. New Age Performers highlight 20 players who have overtaken former greats. Then and Now documents ten player pairings from past and present. Focusing on the highlights of the 1967 season, Baseball Flashbacks offers ten notable occurrences in baseball while News Flashbacks opts for world news.

Although not a main feature of Heritage, the several autographs options are signed on-card and hand numbered in 2016 Topps Heritage Baseball. Real One Autographs are the primary signed set and there is also a Real One Special Edition (#/67) parallel that uses red ink. Adding more signatures to each card, Real One Dual (#/25) and Triple Autographs (#/5) are exclusive to hobby boxes.

Other signed inserts include Flashbacks Autographed Relics (#/25) and a pair of 1-of-1 cut signature sets that focus on 1967.

A regular inclusion for Topps and the primary memorabilia option in the set, Clubhouse Collection includes both relic and autographed relic cards. Offering game-used memorabilia, Clubhouse Collection Relics adds a small jersey or bat piece to the colorful design. Numbered to 99, the Gold parallel increases the rarity and is joined by Dual (#/67), Triple (#/25) and Quad Relics (#/10).

Adding a signature, Clubhouse Collection Autographed Relics are hand-numbered to 25 and Clubhouse Collection Dual Autographed Relics are limited to ten and exclusive to hobby.

Relics also take the form of original stamps or coins from 1967. '67 Mint combines past and present players with various coins, including a Nickel (#/15), Dime (#/10), Quarter (#/5) or Half Dollar (1/1) version. Similarly, 1967 U.S. Postage Stamp Relics (#/50) offer authentic stamps alongside notable events and players.

Lastly, 2016 Topps Heritage Baseball includes several additional options as box loaders. Each found exclusively in hobby boxes, 1967 Ad Panels, 1967 Topps Originals, 1967 Poster Box Loader (#/50) and 1967 Topps Punch-Outs Box Loader continue the specific focus on 1967. There are also relic and autograph versions for the Poster and Punch-Outs.

2016 Topps Heritage Baseball Product Review

Reviewed by Trey Treutel

Good: On-card autographs, deep base checklist, Chrome.

Bad: Variation overkill, saves best images for SP, minimal hit options, one hit per box is likely a relic.

The Bottom Line: Heritage normally lives and dies by the design inspiration for the release. Centered around 1967 Topps, this makes for a solid option that is helped by the inclusion of on-card autographs and some very rare variations. Knowing that big hits and wild designs are not part of this brand, the budget pricing makes this appealing as long you have the right mindset.

Staff Rating:
3.4 / 5.0

Card Design: 3.25/5.0

Again, 2016 Topps Heritage relies heavily on the 1967 design. For the regular base, that works solidly as the overall layout is largely just the image and some random text. I’m personally not a fan of the facsimile signatures, but I get that is part of the original design.

The partial Chrome parallel is also a nice aspect but it did seem to omit a fair amount of notable rookies this year. I get that most will be Chromed-out by year end, you still expect the top players to be featured in these parallels.

One less appealing aspect of ’67 is the Rookie Stars duals. The bright yellow fill is borderline obnoxious and the pairings rarely work out like you want. While that also continues in 2016, Topps at least made an effort to give five of the key rookies their own cards as an Action Image variation.

Heritage is usually good about retail options and that is also the case in 2016. Obviously we did not pull any in the hobby box we opened, but the Stand-Ups and Discs are a cool addition that still keeps to the era of collecting.

Checklist: 4.0/5.0

500 cards is no small total and when you throw in the fact that the final 75 are short prints, it can make for a tough, but still manageable, set to build. It depends on you as a collector, but this gives set collectors something fun to chase and I appreciate that, especially since it is becoming increasingly rare.

Beyond that, the primary autographs set (Real One) mixes former players and young stars of today. While the end result is not the strongest, there are still some fairly big names to hit even if you don’t recognize all the options.

With so few hits in comparison to other modern releases, much of the attention moves to the variations. The five different variations (six, if you count Error and Trade separately) is simply too much. Color Swap and Colorized offer little and could easily be removed. While I appreciate that the Throwbacks are intended to be rare, they are really rare this year. That can be good or bad depending on if you pulled one versus if you are looking for one.

Another negative thing about the variations is that it seems that the best images are saved for them and that is even more of an issue because many of base cards feature cropped headshots that don’t look great.

Value: 2.75/5.0

Never a product for big ROI, the huge hits are few and far between in 2016 Heritage. From a collecting value, Heritage is a favorite for many, but the monetary side is a tough road unless you get lucky and hit a Throwback without having to open cases. Value is never really going to be a selling point for Heritage and as long as collectors know that — which most do — it can still be a justifiable purchase but unlikely to yield a profit or even break even on the cost.

The Fun Factor: 3.75/5.0

I’ve always struggled with these kinds of products as I was not around for the original set that is celebrated and I don’t exactly agree with just copying old designs for new products as a yearly thing. Having said that, I appreciate learning the little things that make an earlier product unique and I do enjoy the aspect of the product that encourages you to search back through piles of base to makes sure you did not miss any of the little surprises.

User Reviews

  1. Oh god, how I hate facsimile autographs! I wish Topps would get rid of those permanently, I don’t care what the original set had!

  2. Any idea if they are going to reprise the gum stain backs again? I feel that piece was nostalgic but, not a real necessity..

  3. I love Heritage every year, and really looking forward to the 67 style. One of my favorite sets.

  4. I love Heritage and 2016 is sure to be a beautiful set just like the original 1967 set was. Looking forward to collecting the posters, and everything thing else this set has to offer. But a few things have bothered me lately are thee redemptions, more purple refractors(change to color! Or just not have em), and the inclusion of players that are not active, nor did they play in 1967, I.e. nomar/griffey. I think the variations are great, but last years black banner was lame. Maybe veteran variations like flagship topps used to do, exept with a new photo different from the 1967 issue, different backs on these too!? Just a few thoughts if anybody from topps is listening.

  5. best product of the year, every year.
(based on quality for cost, value of yield, and design and concept)
will open at least 10 cases this year.

  6. Kenneth, you can bet no one from Topps is listening, they never do. I agree with you that Topps goes way overboard on the variations. I don’t know why they no longer include the team cards in these sets, they were always part of the original sets. I will grade them when they come out. I wonder what the base red parallel set is about. We shall see.

  7. The Team cards are in this set this year.

    Card #’s 341-370

  8. This will be an easy one, only two Tigers autographs, Al Kaline and Jake Wood. And as usual NO Oakland A’s other than Bob Dulbia?!? Could’t Topps find ANYBODY who played for the A’s in ’67?!? C’mon Topps!

  9. If Heritage was made of cardboard like back in the 80s it would be one of the best products. I like it but wish they went more with the old school feel.

  10. Troy, I remember opening up packs of 1967 cards- my favorite all-time set, like it was yesterday…. Have they hit the retail market yet?

  11. I love Topps Heritage, and 1967 is my all-time favorite set. But tell me this.

Why is Kyle Schwarber on a two-player rookie card? He exceeded his rookie eligibility in 2015.

  12. Rick King » Topps saved him for 2016 so that is when his “official” rookie cards will be released.

  13. Is the product still being released 3/2/16?

  14. Is this product already released? I notice the cards are already being listed on eBay.

  15. This is a great product every year. But who picked the Chrome checklist? Only two rookies? A bunch of stars left off? No one wants a chrome card of Jake Odorizzi when they could have Corey Seager or Conforto. Sometimes keeping it simple is the best strategy.

  16. Affordable and fun.

  17. This is the set that I like to build every year. It not only reminds me of collecting as a kid over 30 years ago, but it also a consistent product with wide availability, decent inserts and parallels and it will not brake my wallet to build it out.

One of the problems with the Heritage line of cards is the “re-use” of an old motif and the over use of the same player photos ( albeit edited.cropped) for the subset inserts. A nice set checklist and the old school cardboard help to offset this.

Unfortunately this years design is just not doing it for me.

Is it wrong to think that the back of the card looks better than the front?

Topp’s did seem to pay more attention to collation this year. Having just broke 6 blister boxes ( 4 – Target and 2- Walmart), I received “exactly (1) insert ; Relic, Auto, Refactor/Chrome, New Age Performer, Flashback News/Baseball, SP, Target Stand-Up or Walmart disc per Retail Pack.

The Target Stand Ups are pretty decent and have a black background. The Walmart disc’s are “Square?” with a roundel type player picture. The Target is by far a nicer insert.

Out of the 6 boxes (48 packs total) I received some awesome hits to my surprise.

    (4) Target Stand Ups; M.Harvey, C.Correa, M. Cabrera, and M.Trout
    (2) Walmart Disc squares: A, McCutchen and S.Piscoty
    (15) SP’s #426-500
    (6) New Age Performers
    (4) Baseball Flashbacks
    (5) News Flashbacks
    (4) Now and Then’s

One quick note for set builders tops has again skipped making a nice easy to figure out, orderly numeric list. Instead they have chosen to use the same type of alphabet-ic list they use for the relics. It’s not impossible, just silly and inefficient.

    Chrome/Refractors;
    Y,Puig Black out of 67
    C.Kluber out of 667
    B.Buxton 667
    T.Tulowitzki out of 999
    M.Kemp out of 999

    Relics;

    Jersey R.Cano

Flashback Relic Jersey/Auto Lou Brock out of 25!!!!!!!

My recommendation for this product is to wait out the first week flippers and breakers and if you can, wait a few months and pick up the cards on discount.

The final verdict is this is a totally predictable, middle of the road set that’s fun to build.

  18. Just started opening my first Hobby Box. It included a 1967 Topps Poster Box Loader (loose, no packaging like previous years) of Bryce Harper (67BP-BH).
According to the list above, they are numbered to 50. Mine isn’t numbered at all.

  19. Shawn » They are not numbered but are reportedly limited to 50 copies.

  20. Ken Hoffman, The team cards are a poor excuse Topps is using. They can’t even mimic their original 67 set. I don’t like factory generated errors, variations, etc. Way too much insert “junk”.

  21. VERY NICE SET.
LOVE THE BLACK AND GOLD REFRACTORS.

  22. Outstanding product high quality thicker paper

  23. Just opened a case….interesting thing…..the box hit (auto/relic) was always the pack on top closest to you if you opened the box from left to right….so the lid of the box was hanging over the right side, with the exception of the hot box, which was obviously boxed the exact opposite as the box hit was on the bottom row farthest from me.

As this was my first case, I must admit, it took a lot of fun out of opening the boxes…..for me, I always enjoy the anticipation of not knowing which pack will be the hit…..I could just go straight to it from the beginning of the box, which meant the other 23 packs were not exactly full of anticipation.

    Anyone else had this happen?

But anyway, it was still enjoyable….never got the big “case hit” I always hear about unless you could a red Jim O’Toole auto as the case hit….looking at the odds of a red auto on the back of the pack, I guess it was.

  24. OK set, but values are tanking faster than the
Titanic. Four days ago (only four days after product release), the rookie variation solo poses were well over a C note; now I can’t get ten bucks for the one I pulled. Unless you just want to build the set, stay away! Not a good place for speculation. Way too many gimmicks.

  25. Where are the ratios for the variations: color swap, action, errors, throwback, red back etc.?

  26. Jake » Only variation odds provided were for the Action Images (1:22 packs) – http://www.cardboardconnection.com/2016-topps-heritage-baseball-variations-guide
Red Back parallels are 1:481 hobby packs.

  27. I bought ’67s in ’67 and still have a complete set. The photography is clear to the point of spectacular. Heritage lacks that. Hate that Topps feels it necessary to “fuzz up” the cards. It doesn’t create an older look, just an annoying one.

  28. Good looking product again, don’t like the team cards should have team photos instead. They should cut short prints to 50 cards & spread it out. I gave it 4 stars because it was better than ’66 heritage & so far no white-out errors on card backs.

  29. Heritage isn’t for everyone. Another good year for this product, although I feel autos are very hard to come by. I also think that if Topps put too many marquee players autos in this product it would lose its affordability status for set collectors. This is a niche product for people who love the vintage look and collecting sets.

  30. Heritage is my least favorite set to collect. I know many collectors love this product but to me, the images and colors are what I dislike. However, the one thing I love Heritage for both the big and minor leaguers is that some of the players look very natural on the cards as if they are from that era. And, they are good for trading, too!

  31. Does anyone know why the 2016 Heritage # RO-AK Al Kaline card uses a different card front than the 1967 # 30 Al Kaline card? I thought these veteran autograph cards were always reprints of the original (except when there is a second auto card in the high series, like Phil Niekro & Steve Carlton in 2015 Heritage for example).

  32. Anyone know the rarity of the stamp colors on the buyback cards? I have a gold. I’ve seen black. Thanks.

  33. Hey Chris, maybe it’s not all about the money and is collecting like the a hobby it used to be??? Maybe get a job instead of complaining that your not making enough money when you probably already made a profit!

  34. Great set, every year! I got a $20 Hot Box last week with a purple refractor in every pack along with a Jose Abreu Bat Relic card! Wondering if anyone knows the odds of puling a purple refractor?

  35. From a guy who has been collecting ”67s since 67.
    1. I don’t care about the inserts or variations, just want a set of 500 cards. The short prints make that virtually impossible unless you buy from a dealer, which isn’t any fun.
    2. The ’67 set stands out for its beautiful, clear photography. Why does Topps continue to fuzz up Heritage cards? OK when recreating a set like the ’61s, which had a number of colorized black and white photos. Not OK for a set based on the ’67s.

  36. I have a question. the anibal Sanchez card #106. the card has him wearing a tigers jersey but the it is mispelled on the jersey. it reads tigres. is this an oversight?

  37. Ernst wagner » The jersey is not misspelled and it is not an oversight. These are special jerseys worn during Detroit’s Hispanic heritage games (Fiesta Tigres).

  38. ok, thank you for answering me?
