Typically, Topps Series 2 doesn't aim to break new ground. Rather, it's a continuation and expansion. And while there are some new elements in 2015 Topps Series 2 Baseball, it continues to steer the course started with the season's first release. Hobby boxes have one autograph or memorabilia card. Jumbo boxes promise one autograph and a pair of relics.

The 2015 Topps Series 2 Baseball base set adds another 350 cards to the checklist. This brings the total to 700. In addition to standard veteran and rookie cards, there are Future Stars, Award Winners and 2014 Highlights subsets as well as team cards.

Base cards come with several parallels On the common end is Gold, which come numbered to 2015, and Rainbow Foil (1:10 packs). From there, the rarity drop is significant. Tougher parallels include Snow Camo (#/99), hobby- and jumbo-exclusive Black (#/64), Pink (#/50), numbered silver Framed (one per hobby or jumbo case), Clear (#/10), Printing Plates and Platinum (1/1). Clear parallels are only in basic hobby boxes, not jumbo or retail.

Inserts focus on the game of baseball and some of its history rather than an overlying theme. Eclipsing History (15 cards, 1:10) not only highlights a record breaker but the player they past to take it. Heart of the Order (20 cards, 1:6) not only tackles the subject of sluggers but the lineups around them as well. Stepping Up (20 cards, 1:6) is all about clutch moments. Legendary comebacks are highlighted in ...'Til It's Over (15 cards, 1:8).

Baseball Royalty is exclusive to hobby and jumbo packs. It's theme is simple -- 25 of the game's all-time greats. Gold parallels are numbered to 99.

Highlight of the Year (30 cards, 1:4) continues from Series 1. Cards pick the biggest moment from a year in baseball's history.

Most of the autographs and memorabilia cards are essentially parallels of basic inserts. Baseball Royalty, Heart of the Order, Highlight of the Year, Stepping Up and ...'Til It's Over all have numbered autograph, memorabilia and autographed memorabilia versions. Seeing as how they highlight two players, Eclipsing History has dual-relics, autographs and autographed relics.

But there are some hits that land outside the parallel zone. Strata Signature Relics (#/25) and Strata Cut Signatures (1/1) both return. Career High Autographs and Relics spotlight the best stats of current and past players.

Commemorative relics are once again a case hit in hobby boxes and a guarantee in every jumbo box. Commemorative Patch Pins (#/199) recreate jersey patches only in mini metal. Commemorative Bat Knobs (25 cards) are not real bat ends. Rather they're recreations. Parallels include Black (#/99) and Pink (#/25). Birth Year Coin and Stamp Cards are just as they sound. Each has a stamp and coin from the year the featured player entered the world. They come in several combinations, all of which are numbered: Penny, Nickel, Dime, Quarter and Quarter Autograph.

2015 Topps Series 2 Baseball hobby boxes come with a pair of stamped buybacks. These are original Topps cards with a stamp noting they've been re-released.

Product Review

2015 Topps Series 2 Baseball Product Review

Reviewed by Ryan Cracknell

Good: Comprehensive base set, continued clean look, not all inserts are carryovers from Series 1.

Bad: The second time around doesn’t have the same excitement as the first.

The Bottom Line: As is always the case, 2015 Topps Series 2 continues on from where the first left off. Arriving with the season in full tilt, there are some additions like a certain rookie you might have heard of — Kris Bryant. The overall look and feel stays the same, although there are several new inserts. There’s a certain familiarity, as one would expect and even want from a second series, but there’s also a little more freshness that recent Series 2 releases.

Staff Rating:
4.0 / 5.0

Card Design: 4.3/5.0

The base set is the same as Series 1. While not as fresh as when the first set arrived, for obvious reasons, big-picture thinking, it’s still something different after years of white borders. They’re colorful, clear to read and showcase some solid photos.

For the inserts that are new to Series 2 (about half of them), I found things a little more mixed. Eclipsing History has a nice space motif to go with dual-player theme. Stepping Up also looks good bringing in a pair of player photos with the close-up of home plate in the background. On the other side is ’Til It’s Over, which use thick diagonal boxes to block out virtually everything else on the front of the card. The premium feel of Baseball Royalty is nice, but a little color would have gone a long way.

Checklist: 4.0/5.0

Once again, the bigger base set helps give things more meaning. While some of the smaller players don’t need to be in every release, their inclusion here adds to the comprehensive nature that both Series 1 and 2 have when put together. The late inclusion of Kris Bryant is an obvious big plus.

It’s nice to see more new inserts this time around. Some carry over, but they do so for a purpose. First Pitch just scratched the surface in Series 1 and the “players” are all different and varied. Highlight of the Year was announced as a year-long set from the start, so there’s some planned continuity that’s working towards a goal. But then there are several new elements that give Series 2 something of a separate identity in the extras department.

I’ll repeat the sentiments I had with Series 1, but the Sparkle variations need to go. They don’t offer much outside of rarity, something that could be replaced with something more meaningful and interesting. They’re at a point where many are simply checking the codes on the back to spot them seeing as how there are so many and the differences are so small. I’d argue that if you have to confirm something by checking the fine print, there’s an issue. The quickly diminishing returns on the secondary market would agree.

Value: 4.0/5.0

Like any flagship Topps set, you’re probably not going to want to be chasing the autographs and memorabilia. And at the price tag, nothing much should be expected in that regard. There’s your promised hit per box but the real value comes in everything else — the sorting, the big stacks, the fun in looking back and studying the cards. If you get something fancy like a Strata autograph, think of it as a bonus.

If getting something of value is a big consideration, this is better than a lot of other flagship Topps sets, simply because of Bryant. Besides the base card, there are the many parallels and an autograph, all of which have generated a lot of activity. Compared to a lot of sets, the parallels also seem to fare better. It’s the little things here and there that can add up. Bonus if you play the Bunt app and get some free coins.

The Fun Factor: 4.0/5.0

For me, flagship is tradition. It’s something I work on every year. Because of that, it’s hard for me not to enjoy. 2015 is a standout year for the brand, though. The base set is worth digging into, the inserts are interesting — it’s what I expect and hope for. Sometimes it pays off, other years it doesn’t so much. This year, it really works.

User Reviews

  1. How many cards will be in the Update set?

  2. Ricardo Urrusuno » No details on Update have been released yet.

  3. When will the Series 2 checklist be released?

  4. Ryan, just curious why Topps doesn’t seem to make any Matt Wieters cards? Any idea? Thanks

  5. Paul » Rather than using players with the blanket MLBPA license like others, Topps signs players to individual card contracts. For whatever reason, Wieters has never signed one. We touch on it a little more here: http://www.cardboardconnection.com/player/matt-wieters

  6. Still no Molitor managerial card? Drag. Maybe in the Update…

  7. Dan – Paul Molitor most likely won’t have a Manager card until 2016 Topps Heritage.

  8. Very interesting about Wieters. Thanks for the info Ryan.

  9. Was hoping to see more Kris Bryant inserts. Just the career highlights auto is upsetting. Still won’t keep me from buying though

  10. Andrew P » It’s likely he was squeezed in at the last-second. Checklists are supposed to be done far in advance. Will probably be no shortage of inserts to chase by the time Update Series rolls around.

  11. When do you think you would have any info on sparkle or photo variation cards?

  12. Retail is just starting to show up. Probably at some point today we’ll have some early info.

  13. No Addy Russell RC? Garbage! 2015 Update should be promising with the likes of Correa, Gallo, Buxton, Russell, Syndergaard, Matz, Olivera, Schwarber, Lindor, and hopefully Seager & Sano. I agree the lack of Bryant inserts is disappointing. Not a whole lot to chase when it comes to the base set here. I’ll just have to hope for some good parallels & inserts.

  14. Photo variations I have found so far are Andrew McCutchen, Lorenzo Cain, Max Scherzer, Johnny Cueto, Neftali Feliz and Andrelton Simmons. Only sparkle variation I have found so far out of two hobby cases is Juan Perez.

  15. You can see all the photo variations and a running tally of Sparkles here: http://www.cardboardconnection.com/2015-topps-series-2-baseball-variations

  16. The foil on some of the inserts is blurring out the players name.
Wish they could monitor quality a little better. I’m sure they have enough money to run the line a bit slower, and take a little longer to check on the quality of the product.
In a rush to make money, quality takes a back seat.
Bought a case of Hobby boxes, think this is it.
Good luck to those who continue collecting.

  17. Topps always has the best inserts. The Baseball Royalty thick insert cards are really as beautiful of a “non-hit” card as you will ever see. I bought one jumbo box and it was loaded. The auto was a Jeff Bagwell Heart of the Order /25. There was a Mark McGwire dime/stamp birth year card /50, a sparkle variation of Torii Hunter and a photo variation of Corey Kluber. The GU relic was Matt Holiday. I watched someone else open a case and I didn’t see any sparkles or any tough autos. Clearly I got extremely lucky, but this is still a fun and affordable product for set building and chasing numbered parallels of top rookies like Kris Bryant.

  18. The #558 Patrick Corbin I pulled has the wrong picture: Vidal Nuno from series one #116.

  19. Opened two hobby boxes this weekend. The first featured four packs that had two of the same card in them, no variant, no sparkle, nothing. Very odd for Topps. The second box featured a much better distribution. Hits included a Chisenhall coin/stamp card and a Josh Hamilton relic. Still a little short of the full set.

Also grabbed a blaster today. The HR medallion was Hunter Pence, butt he medallion was well of center, so that kind of sucked.

But for the most part it’s a solid set and I dig the various inserts. Wish the hobby boxes had more hits, but that keeps the price point lower, so I can live with that trade off. Favorite insert I’ve seen so far is the black parallels, which came one per hobby box.

  20. I like all the insert sets, very colorful and more exciting than series one. Bought two hobby boxes with some nice pulls. Will begin chasing some retail packs to complete insert sets. Nice product at the low price point.

  21. I bought a hobby box but was disappointed I couldn’t complete a set from it (about 15 cards short). In the box there were about 75 duplicates, which I think is quite a few considering how many inserts there are in the series. Overall the set looks great and inserts look really good but I think for $135 Jumbo Box you should receive more. The autograph was a player who never pitched in the big leagues (Mike Foltynewicz), which I didn’t know they actually did. The relics were a Lance Lynn uniform relic and a David Ortiz commemorative world series patch.

  22. Not a rating, but does anyone know if the Bunt player code cards are in both Hobby & Jumbo boxes, or just 1 or the other?

  23. This set is great with the many star rookies in it but I gave one problem. This year I was hoping to get a Ken Giles rookie card, but in this set there was only a Ken Giles card without the rc symbol on it. So I looked up if I just missed his rc card from last year. They only made his rc in Heritage and Allen and Ginters sets. KEN GILES HAS NO BASE CARD RC’S, NOT EVEN AN UPDATE SERIES CARD!!!!

  24. Any word as to whether or not Topps will be releasing a mini set of Series 1 and 2 like they have in recent years?

  25. The series 2 cards ware pretty good. I was happily surprised by the amount of rookie cards in this series. The insert sets are better than the series 1 inserts I feel. The series 2 cards were also cut much better than the series 1 cards. What I mean is that that the cards are much closer to centered. Series 1 cards were horrible with their cuts. I got really good hits from my purchase.

To James from above. I get that you didn’t get hits on autos and relics. But don’t forget to include the inserts. Gold, pink, rainbow, black, camo, sparkle, etc have better value than some of the relic&autos. I feel that you overpaid at $135 for a box. I got 6 jumbo box case for $530 on line. I don’t want to advertise the place but I have been getting good deals from the site for 3 years now. As much as I want to support my local dealers, their prices are way over the top. But they do that to make a profit. So I get it but heck no will I do that ever again. Also look into locking up orders way before the release date of the cards. Sellers change their prices due to demand. So the starting price now for the Updates will be lower than the price at or near release time in October. Also the blaster boxes at Walmart,Target and Toys R Us have been quite bad for me this year. Series 1 I had good hits in the first week of release. But got very little good cards after. Toysrus are better if you can get a purple card of someone decent. But I haven’t got one yet. Also use Walmart prices to price match at Toysrus. They over charge on their blasters. I generally do not buy the $20 blaster. The relics in those boxes are not good. The $10 hangers have been my go to box when I buy from the stores. This series I got nothing of value. 1 sp that was not a good one to get and I spent a bit. Just trying to share some knowledge on how to attack buying cards. Cards are a great hobby and you will get good hits. I have been collecting since I was 12. I am 44 now and the best hits I have ever got are ones from the last 3 years of buying from my on line shop. Good luck to you on future cards. It is always about the thrill of opening the pack. If I can get close to what I spend I am pleased. Wait until you get your first redemption card. I was so stoked :)

  26. Just got a Jose Altuve sparkle from rack pack, awesome. 1st ever pulled sparkle, I was stoked!

  27. Just bought my first pack of cards in over a decade and pulled the ASCS-BR. While I debated on which set to buy and how much to spend I think its fair to say I made a good investment.

  28. Great looking cards, you can read them easily

I have just bought 3 packs of Topps series 2 from Wal-Mart’s, I through a pack to my wife and she pulls out ADAM JONES,topp certifed autograph card.congratulations it says.it not the square card it different, thank you, I have no idea what this card is worth.anyone help with the value, thank you, keith

  29. Card #614 (Jordan Walden) – Nice Photoshop job, Topps. That would be Michael Wacha’s uniform number. Walden wears #53.

  30. Variation alert – I just noticed as I was doing some sorting that on the back of #654 – Alfredo Simon, in the small circle on the back that designates his position, there is a color variation of the letter. One is a dark gray, the other is silver. Has anyone else noticed this on other cards?

  31. Purchased a couple of the jumbo packs and I pulled a Silver Framed card!!!! Numbered to only 20!

  32. Why is it that during the 1st week or 2 of release I pull some pretty good cards and after that they are few and far between? What about the Taylor Hill #655, its a rookie according to the back of the card but no RC on front of card?

  33. The product is a little pricey for me because I am a 13 year old and don’t get that much money but I LOVE Topps!

  34. Just pulled a 2015 series 2 Brandon guyer 1of1. No relic or auto. Any idea of value?
