If you've collected the brand in the past, 2014 Topps Allen & Ginter Baseball is what you'd expect. Sort of. As always, it's predictably unpredictable, bringing together a broad mix of baseball and non-baseball subjects with a decidedly vintage feel. The hits configuration is familiar -- three total autographs, memorabilia cards, original Allen & Ginter cards and Rip Cards.

The 2014 Topps Allen & Ginter Baseball base set follows the same pattern as past years. It has 350 total cards featuring veterans, rookies, past stars, pop culture personalities and "champions" from other areas. Keeping with the past, the final 50 cards are short prints. That said, putting a set together shouldn't be too hard as short prints are inserted every other pack.

Every pack comes with one mini card. A lot of the focus is on Mini Parallels. Besides the basic versions, there are several other shrunken takes on the base set: Allen & Ginter Back, Black-Bordered, No Number (#/50), Flag Back (hand-numbered to 25), Wood (1/1), and Printing Plates. Cloth Cards are framed mini cards limited to ten copies each.

New to 2014 Topps Allen & Ginter Baseball are Metal minis. These come numbered and are printed on metal stock.

Autographs are framed once again and signed on card. The checklist has both active and retired Major Leaguers as well as more than 30 signers from other areas of sports and pop culture. Red Autographs (#/10) return.

Allen & Ginter Book Cards (50 cards, #/10) come with a pair of signatures and matching memorabilia pieces.

2014 Topps Allen & Ginter Baseball also has 20 Cut Signatures, all of which are one-of-ones.

One of the hallmarks of Allen & Ginter is theRip Card. They're back, once again as a hobby case hit. Inside each of these cards is a second card. The enticement is whether you destroy the limited edition card on the outside to get to the inner one.

The Rip Card bounty is as vast as the rest of the release. Kicking things off are 50 Mini Exclusives that run #351-400 on the checklist. These are variations of players on the main checklist. Mini Exclusives have Wood (1/1) and Metal parallels. Artist's Originals are mini paintings done directly on the card. There are 30 total across the entire print run. Some of the Red Autographs are also inserted as unframed versions inside of Rip Cards.

Relic Cards come in three designs. Two are Framed Mini Relics while the third is done as a standard-sized card. The mini relics mix baseball and non-baseball subjects while the regular relic cards are strictly baseball. Historical hair is back with four different DNA Relics. Each is a one-of-one and has a strand of hair from and important historical figure. Oddity Relics return with unique pieces.

Collectors can find a pair of new relics in 2014 Topps Allen & Ginter Baseball. Pop Star Relics (ten cards, #/25) have a relic piece to go alongside an image that's done in the style of a pop-up book. Bugs, butterflies and sea monkeys have been done before. The Amateur Osteologist takes it to another level with an animal skeleton.

Double Rip Cards return for a second year. These can be ripped from both sides to reveal two special cards. Besides what can be found in regular Rip Cards, these have a couple of exclusive inserts. Famous Firsts is a set of 50 cards highlighting important debuts throughout history. Every card in the set is unique and there are no parallels. Apparently, Mini Rip Cards are the hobby equivalent of the small gift that's wrapped so many times it looks bigger. These cards can be ripped yet again to reveal either a Mini Mini Parallel or a redemption for a set of Framed Mini Relics.

What about the basic inserts? 2014 Topps Allen & Ginter Baseball has those too. The Pastime's Pastime (100 cards, 1:2 packs) looks at what baseball players like to do when they're not playing baseball. Fields of Yore (ten cards) spotlight stadiums from the past. Airplanes and aviation are the focus of Air Supremacy (20 cards). The World's Capitals (ten cards) highlights some of the lovliest capital cities on the planet. Festivals and Fairs (ten cards) looks at cultural celebrations from around the globe. Natural Wonder (20 cards) is the hobby equivalent of a travel brochure, focusing on some of the most unique locations in the world. Cards without a Pastime's Pastime card should have one of the other basic inserts.

There are also a handful of mini inserts in 2014 Topps Allen & Ginter Baseball, which combine to land 1:5 packs. Larger Than Life (10 cards) is all about myths and folk heroes. Little Lions (15 cards) is dedicated to cats. Into the Unknown (15 cards) celebrates important explorers. Where Nature Ends (25 cards) honors great artists. World's Deadliest Predators (21 cards) offers lessons in animals you probably want to avoid in the wild.

Box loaders offer a bonus in 2014 Topps Allen & Ginter Baseball. Landmarks and Monuments are Cabinet cards with images of beautiful places from around the world. Over-Sized Reprints recreate base cards from ten top players in a jumbo format.

Besides basic inserts, there are Relics (#/25) Autographs (#/15), Autographed Relics (#/5) and Cut Signatures (1/1).  Cabinet Relics (ten cards, 1/1) have full jersey pieces of a player's name or number. Cabinet Book Relics (ten cards, 1/1) have two full-sized number or name relics.

Inserted one per case are Mini Parallel Packs. These have exclusive red mini parallels that are numbered to 33.

Product Review

2014 Topps Allen & Ginter Baseball Product Review

Reviewed by Ryan Cracknell

Good: Elegant design, unmatched variety and quirk, fun.

Bad: Weak autograph list compared to past years, holes left in checklist by binder exclusives.

The Bottom Line: 2014 Topps Allen & Ginter Baseball has a little bit of this and a little of that. Some of it’s baseball, some of it’s not. It’s largely the same formula long-time fans of the brand expect, even if the formula is more apparent that previous years. The cards look great and there’s plenty to collect. Yet, at the same time, it feels like something is missing. It’s definitely a down year for autographs. Save for a couple of exceptions, there aren’t many genuine headliners or all-time sports greats like there usually are. So maybe it’s a little bit quiet, but so what if 2014 Allen & Ginter doesn’t try to one-up itself. It’s still an attractive product with lots to offer beyond the hits.

Staff Rating:
3.8 / 5.0

Card Design: 4.8/5.0

The base design is fantastic. It sticks with the filtered photos and old-fashioned fonts and lines. At the same time, it’s distinct, which isn’t something I can say happens every year with Ginter. The large team names are a bold enough switch to make them look different over past years but not out of place.

For the most part, basic inserts and mini inserts are much the same. The themes are different, but they stay the course. The most noticeable departure is also the easiest to pull. The Pastime’s Pastimes’ black look is a big difference from everything else in the product. While the name is a little too cute for its own good, the design alone makes me want to build it.

To keep box hits from feeling repetitive, relics have several different designs. All are clean and better-than-average. Autographs get a gold frame that isn’t as bold (in a good way) as some previous years.

Checklist: 3.3/5.0

For me, the charm of Allen & Ginter is in its quirks. I usually love studying the non-baseball autograph list to see which signers are in it as it’s usually a place to find some strong first-time autographs. Often there are at least a few that are holy grail-type autographs. Not so this year. A handful are solid, like Kevin Smith. Dr. James Andrews is a good fit under the odd banner. But, overall, there isn’t much that’s bound to create long-term buzz. It’s almost like a reality show where certain signers fill a ready-made spot on the checklist. There’s your model, a TV chef, ESPN personalities, fantasy baseball person, etc. They work one year when you get the biggest possible name. After that, there are both diminishing returns and the disappointment of not reaching a previous high. For example, landing Kate Upton was huge in 2012. The model spot slid in 2013 and goes even further now. If there needs to be a spot, there are probably, it’s likely only a name like Cindy Crawford could bring it to the level of the past.

The down-year in autographs carries over to the baseball side of the product as well. There are some very strong ones like Sandy Koufax, Greg Maddux, Mike Trout and Jose Abreu, but then there’s a significant drop off where most of the remaining spots are made even weaker by the fact that they’ve been in similar slots in several other 2014 products.

The introduction of Ultra Pro’s binder kit is a good one. And while the exclusive cards are great, having them in the middle of existing insert sets is bound to be a killer for several collectors. What would be nice for next year would be to add the exclusives to the end of an existing set or create something new entirely. This way, collectors who might not want the binder won’t have gaps in their collections.

After the Kardashian wedding menus and hidden cards in box lids last year, there’s not nearly as much “weird” things in 2014 Allen & Ginter. In fact, it almost feels tame. The set always walks a fine line of including enough non-baseball content with too much as it can be a divisive concept among collectors. I’m all for the non-baseball stuff here. And that’s where the checklist continues to excel. Not only is it different, the strange names some of the sets get add to the intrigue.

Value: 3.0/5.0

Maybe the last couple of years have been very strong. Maybe Allen & Ginter needs something of an overhaul. But it doesn’t seem to have nearly the level of high-end content over previous years. The number of rare cards may be growing, but a lot of that is coming in the form of more parallels and babushka doll-levels or rip cards. This is where two or three marquee autograph signers can make a huge difference.

There’s lots of depth, but for a box at this price to not even promise an autograph, it makes it pricey. And even if you do land an autograph, the vast majority aren’t much better value-wise than a basic relic.

The Fun Factor: 4.2/5.0

Even if the 2014 edition of Allen & Ginter is on the down side, this is still one of the most enjoyable products I’ve busted in some time. The designs are strong and there’s lots to mull through. The big hits might not be there, which could bring box prices down over the long-term. At that point, I’ll be looking to happily bust another box or two to fill in some of the gaps I’m left with.

Today, he continues to build sets, go after inserts with cool technologies, chase Montreal Expos and finish off his John Jaha master collection. 1. Will they put cards in between the box covers?

  2. Nothing in the initial announcement but I’d suggest checking them just in case.

  3. I like the fact that the facts of this set, slowly reveal them selves months after release. My only problem is that the set is pain to chase,4 Hobby boxes and countless retail boxes from walmart. Had to finish off of websites.

  4. Excellent product every year. Definitely the best bang for your buck too. Hobby boxes under $90 with three hits per box. This is where you start to see the exciting rookie cards through the current season. Cant wait to get my hands on this product.

  5. Is there any schedule date of release for this yet? I know last year it was delayed a bit, but I would like to have a day on the calendar to be counting down to. This is the set that got me back into the hobby and I look forward to it every year.

  6. Al Hathaway » Currently, the second week of July.

  7. Love Ginter, regardless of the year or checklist, it’s always an interesting and surprises around every corner rip!!

  8. They need to do a radio/TV broadcaster set! I like to see a Bob Uecker Ginter autograph. Does anyone know if they have a suggestion box? Haha

  9. I look forward to this product year after year!

  10. No soccer cards this time???

  11. Sean Y, a Vin Scully auto!!

  12. I love these cards but get annoyed by all the non-baseball cards. And where is Abreu and Tanaka? Puig and Machado made this set ok for me last year but this year…Where are the top 2 rookies? Are they gonna be SP?

  13. Dan » I’m 99.99% sure Tanaka and Abreu will be on the final checklist. Topps sometimes sends out preliminary names when they solicit a set 5-6 months out.

  14. ok no Im seeing that they will be in the set and special versions of their cards will be given away at the release party in Clevland. Too bad I don’t live there.

  15. Dan » The National promos will likely be in addition to cards in the main set.

  16. If that’s the case, with how Abreu and Tanaka are performing, I give it 5 stars. I can deal with weird non-baseball cards if those 2 guys are in there.

  17. Kinda weird that George Springer doesn’t have a RC next to his name. Lol

  18. bob » As noted at the top, it’s not the final checklist.

  19. i bought like 6 packs of the 2013 and got a joey votto jersey framed card and a redemption for a tommy lee framed auto. needless to say i will buy packs of the 2014 i dunno about hobby boxes tho not enough rookies

  20. I love how people skew things by giving a product 5 stars or whatever and it hasn’t even come out yet. Give it a rest people. Judge the product AFTER it comes out. Geeez

  21. It is hard to buy cards with no checklist… release is in 4 days?

  22. Have you heard anything on the final Checklist?

  23. The checklist here says 300 cards, the latest solicit I saw says 350 cards, so I assume Tanaka and Abreu are in there somewhere and I assume they’ll be SPs.

Really hope Mattingly is in the base set too.

  24. robix » As the meat of the article points out, yes, there will be 350 cards — 300 base plus 50 SP.

  25. Finally!! A somewhat complete checklist. Thank you!

  26. Does anyone know the best place to purchase the binder? I’m not seeing on Topps website. Thanks

  27. Dave » It is not an online-exclusive, so your best bet is to check your local shop or wait until they show up on eBay. Here is the article that covers the binder: http://www.cardboardconnection.com/2014-topps-allen-ginter-getting-binder-exclusive-cards

  28. I pulled some great items out of 4 boxes, I got a Wilmer Flores auto jumbo patch book card numbered to 10, a Greg Maddux wood mini numbered 1/1, a Bryce Harper Rip Card numbered to 10, a Dustin Pedroia Rip Card numbered to 50 that I ripped and it had a Matt Moore metal card, a bazooka back mini and an Adrian Beltre mini printing plate. Also 5 jersey cards and 2 autographs. The only complaint I have is the collation, I had several triples and quadruples of other cards while still being short over 60 cards for one complete base set and 15 short of the SP set.

  29. I guess no springer base rc :( topps just hates the Astros

  30. bob » It’s likely the base set was set in stone before he was called up. In that regard, it may be easier to add the autograph.

  31. Love this set year after year!

  32. I love the variety that comes with this product.

  33. Excellent product. Pulled a Larry King auto and a Trout relic. Also a no numbered mini and a no number base card. Lastly box topper was a mini pack of red bordered cards numbered to 33. Can’t find any info on those.

  34. zimster49 » The mini packs were originally slated as a case hit and include exclusive parallels. The red border cards were to be numbered to 50, but that was changed to #/33.

  35. It’s just lame that Springer is missing alot of the good design cards with his RC like Archives, and Now allen & ginter, i know he was brang up late, but they should have been prepared just incase

  36. Fairly new to collecting cards but I really enjoyed the 2013 A&G set. I figured i’d would see what the 2014 set looked like and got a blaster box from Target and a Retail box from Amazon. Between the two I pulled a Ian Desmond full size relic card, an Allyson Felix framed auto card, and a mini Carlton Fisk red A&G back #14/25. As of right now I still prefer the 2013 set but i’m sure i’ll be buying more of the 2014 sometime soon.

  37. are the glossy 1/1’s serial numbered or somehow marked as such?

  38. emeeks » They are numbered 1/1 on the back of the card.

  39. Bought a case and was overall happy. I don’t like that they have 6 minis on the checklist that you have to buy multiple binders to get. Also, coincidence 11 has not surfaced any where. What’s the deal with this card? If anyone wants to do some set trading, I’ll up for it!

  40. hey shawn id like to do some trading. email me ericmeekins@gmail.com

  41. First box I have ever bought for myself and I pulled a 5/5 McGwire/Canseco double rip card. Magnet sticks to it.

  42. Craig » Congrats on the great pull!

  43. Anyone know about no number base cards I have a Desmond Jennings

  44. Adam vella » I got one too. It is an uncorrected error.

  45. I got a no number Jennings too. Seems like its tough to get Abreu. Maybe it’s just my luck. Is it possible for there to be 2 hits in one pack? I just bought a box at a hobby shop with 2 packs missing and got 0 hits. Lame. 22 packs – no hits

  46. Not for me. This would have been a fun product if the price were cut in half, otherwise I feel you don’t get much for the money. 10 packs and no hits, and the base cards are boring; which would be OK if this was a nostalgic collection that didn’t cost so much.

  47. Anyone know what the print run on the full sized relics is roughly? Got a Tanaka and a Dr. Andrews.

  48. A fun set again. I love the non baseball stuff as much as the baseball stuff.

  49. I really like the art work. There are so many new features on most chrome , die cut , and such, this goes back to basics in a fantastic way!
My son and I started in early 90’s and he moved out and left me our collection, so he’ll be happy when I give him my Kevin Smith worn material ! Great job Topps!

  50. I started collecting again this summer after 14 years away.

Of the sets I’ve purchased A&G has been my favorite because of the variety. I

bought a few packs from a hobby box at ASG Fanfest (nothing but base cards in those packs; however, I bought two blaster boxes from Target and got a Hanley Ramirez Mini Card Jersey and Phelps Sweatt Jersey card.

  51. I am strictly a football card collector. My knowledge with baseball is as far fetched as the Milky Way. I purchase a blaster from Walmart. My break consisted of one of the most interesting subjects, a “Snoop Lion”.

Shocked was my impression, truly, how great is that! The other notable card was a mini black border Jackie Robinson. For the first time ever, I now own several Japanese players. Forum members of CCW were gracious to send me other players of Japanese decent. Oh, wow! My people in sports!

Great card stock with nice renditions. An amusing array of non-sports cards. My only caveat with this set were quality control issues with the minis, it seems that Topps had missed cut the edges and left out two decorated bands on my Jackie Robinson mini. It looked like an eight of an inch. Other than this issue, I will be purchasing a AG blaster every year from this point on.

    Toshi

  52. Love the Air Supremacy cards.
    I bought 3 boxes.
Pulled the same patch in box 1 and 3. Dr. James Andrews. Pulled
2 Rip cards, Ripped both and both were Bo Jackson Short Prints.

  53. where do i start, my wife and i fell in love with Allen Ginter last year and have waited all year for the new arrival. so we preorder a case, and finally the day comes and the mail truck brings it to our door. after 12 boxes, were looking at five common autos and 29 plain white relic pieces. After building the set and most of the mini subsets, we felt kind of empty as we could have bought any other product and atleast pulled one decent auto or patch. now you look online and the best non sport auto is snoop lion? lol….i had my best luck buying the singles i wanted for next to nothing online and will never purchase a case again. when your rip card is your best hit and you cant even get 50 for it, you’ll start realizing you just spent $1,100 on a base set. so disappointed this year, as all the best cards have already been pulled and even the dna cards cant fetch 1,000. It’s not about money and profit of selling its about the love of collecting, but five autos for 1,100? theres no fun in it. i really feel they could have so much better then this and i’m sorry to say but i’m done with ginter. i had more fun with archives and gypsy queen. i just don’t see the fun in it anymore.

  54. Love A&G Every year! Haven’t been able to afford it this year though. Was wondering, WHO won the box of A&G you had up Ryan? Can’t seem to find it anywhere. Could you email me please and let me know :) Thanks! Have a GREAT DAY there @CardBoardConnection! You guys ROCK!
    Dave

  55. Dave » I believe it was posted over on the Facebook page.

  56. It’s always an adventure to open a Allen and Ginter pack find something exciting, Whether sports related or something fun.
The other day I found an 2014 Allen and Ginter #145 Derek Jeter card wrapped individualy within the baseball pack, with glossy surface, stamped in gold, a 1/1, one of one. Did I hit the jackpot or just another special insert?
Anyway, I think it some fun to get a special Jeter card in the year he retires.

  57. I am in Canada (Quebec) and just saw this product and tried a pack and was hooked right away. Enjoyed the variety. Got a RIP Shelby Miller 55/75…..what do these sell for as a minimum “unripped”. Thanks
