2014 Topps Allen & Ginter Baseball CardsBrand: Allen & Ginter
If you've collected the brand in the past, 2014 Topps Allen & Ginter Baseball is what you'd expect. Sort of. As always, it's predictably unpredictable, bringing together a broad mix of baseball and non-baseball subjects with a decidedly vintage feel. The hits configuration is familiar -- three total autographs, memorabilia cards, original Allen & Ginter cards and Rip Cards.
The 2014 Topps Allen & Ginter Baseball base set follows the same pattern as past years. It has 350 total cards featuring veterans, rookies, past stars, pop culture personalities and "champions" from other areas. Keeping with the past, the final 50 cards are short prints. That said, putting a set together shouldn't be too hard as short prints are inserted every other pack.
Every pack comes with one mini card. A lot of the focus is on Mini Parallels. Besides the basic versions, there are several other shrunken takes on the base set: Allen & Ginter Back, Black-Bordered, No Number (#/50), Flag Back (hand-numbered to 25), Wood (1/1), and Printing Plates. Cloth Cards are framed mini cards limited to ten copies each.
New to 2014 Topps Allen & Ginter Baseball are Metal minis. These come numbered and are printed on metal stock.
Autographs are framed once again and signed on card. The checklist has both active and retired Major Leaguers as well as more than 30 signers from other areas of sports and pop culture. Red Autographs (#/10) return.
Allen & Ginter Book Cards (50 cards, #/10) come with a pair of signatures and matching memorabilia pieces.
2014 Topps Allen & Ginter Baseball also has 20 Cut Signatures, all of which are one-of-ones.
One of the hallmarks of Allen & Ginter is theRip Card. They're back, once again as a hobby case hit. Inside each of these cards is a second card. The enticement is whether you destroy the limited edition card on the outside to get to the inner one.
The Rip Card bounty is as vast as the rest of the release. Kicking things off are 50 Mini Exclusives that run #351-400 on the checklist. These are variations of players on the main checklist. Mini Exclusives have Wood (1/1) and Metal parallels. Artist's Originals are mini paintings done directly on the card. There are 30 total across the entire print run. Some of the Red Autographs are also inserted as unframed versions inside of Rip Cards.
Relic Cards come in three designs. Two are Framed Mini Relics while the third is done as a standard-sized card. The mini relics mix baseball and non-baseball subjects while the regular relic cards are strictly baseball. Historical hair is back with four different DNA Relics. Each is a one-of-one and has a strand of hair from and important historical figure. Oddity Relics return with unique pieces.
Collectors can find a pair of new relics in 2014 Topps Allen & Ginter Baseball. Pop Star Relics (ten cards, #/25) have a relic piece to go alongside an image that's done in the style of a pop-up book. Bugs, butterflies and sea monkeys have been done before. The Amateur Osteologist takes it to another level with an animal skeleton.
Double Rip Cards return for a second year. These can be ripped from both sides to reveal two special cards. Besides what can be found in regular Rip Cards, these have a couple of exclusive inserts. Famous Firsts is a set of 50 cards highlighting important debuts throughout history. Every card in the set is unique and there are no parallels. Apparently, Mini Rip Cards are the hobby equivalent of the small gift that's wrapped so many times it looks bigger. These cards can be ripped yet again to reveal either a Mini Mini Parallel or a redemption for a set of Framed Mini Relics.
What about the basic inserts? 2014 Topps Allen & Ginter Baseball has those too. The Pastime's Pastime (100 cards, 1:2 packs) looks at what baseball players like to do when they're not playing baseball. Fields of Yore (ten cards) spotlight stadiums from the past. Airplanes and aviation are the focus of Air Supremacy (20 cards). The World's Capitals (ten cards) highlights some of the lovliest capital cities on the planet. Festivals and Fairs (ten cards) looks at cultural celebrations from around the globe. Natural Wonder (20 cards) is the hobby equivalent of a travel brochure, focusing on some of the most unique locations in the world. Cards without a Pastime's Pastime card should have one of the other basic inserts.
There are also a handful of mini inserts in 2014 Topps Allen & Ginter Baseball, which combine to land 1:5 packs. Larger Than Life (10 cards) is all about myths and folk heroes. Little Lions (15 cards) is dedicated to cats. Into the Unknown (15 cards) celebrates important explorers. Where Nature Ends (25 cards) honors great artists. World's Deadliest Predators (21 cards) offers lessons in animals you probably want to avoid in the wild.
Box loaders offer a bonus in 2014 Topps Allen & Ginter Baseball. Landmarks and Monuments are Cabinet cards with images of beautiful places from around the world. Over-Sized Reprints recreate base cards from ten top players in a jumbo format.
Besides basic inserts, there are Relics (#/25) Autographs (#/15), Autographed Relics (#/5) and Cut Signatures (1/1). Cabinet Relics (ten cards, 1/1) have full jersey pieces of a player's name or number. Cabinet Book Relics (ten cards, 1/1) have two full-sized number or name relics.
Inserted one per case are Mini Parallel Packs. These have exclusive red mini parallels that are numbered to 50.
