Overview
The Boston Bruins have enjoyed routine stretches of success in the NHL since their founding in 1924. One of hockey's "Original Six" teams, the Bruins' history and tradition of winning is rivaled by few teams in the NHL. The Bruins' organization has been host to some of the greatest all-time players in the sport, including Eddie Shore, Phil Esposito, Gerry Cheevers and the legendary Bobby Orr, to name a few. Led by such talent, the franchise has won six Stanley Cup titles to date. Their most recent victory was during the 2010-11 season. Among American teams, they have the second-most wins in NHL history, trailing only the Detroit Red Wings. The Bruins are fifth on the all-time wins list.
Throughout the team's history, they have not shied away from making the big trade or aggressively pursuing high profile free agents. They have also proven adept at finding key talent in the draft. One of the most lopsided trades in NHL history was orchestrated by the Bruins in the 1960s, when they acquired Phil Esposito, Ken Hodge and Fred Stanfield from the Chicago Blackhawks. Esposito would go on to set several scoring records, including being the first player to score over 100 points during the regular season.
The team's leadership also hasn't been afraid to make moves that would most assuredly result in backlash from fans. Such was the case in 2006 when the team traded their star and captain, Joe Thornton, to the San Jose Sharks. In return, the Bruins received a handful of young and less-expensive talent.
More recently, the Bruins have rebuilt their franchise with a core of veterans and young aspiring stars. They are one of the NHL's most collectable modern teams with a wealth of talent, including names like Patrice Bergeron, Milan Lucic and David Krejci.
