The 2011-12 season got off to a rough start because of the NBA lockout. The owners and players had issues agreeing on the new CBA, and nearly two months of basketball were lost. A truncated season began right around Christmas. The Miami Heat ultimately prevailed against the Oklahoma City Thunder to win the title. LeBron James finally had his championship and the value of his cards was pushed even higher.
The lockout had a large effect on 2011-12 basketball cards, specifically Panini. The total product offering was cut down to only a few products. While redemption XRC cards would be available, no true rookie cards would be included in 2011-12 products. Instead, there would be a double rookie class for 2012-13. The only place to find in-pack cards for 2011 NBA Draft picks is in Upper Deck products. While they are not official rookie cards, they are a popular option. Also, Panini announced they had reached an exclusive rookie card deal with the top two picks in the draft, Kyrie Irving and Derrick Williams.
Although there were no true rookie cards during the 2011-12 season, several rookie players caught the attention of collectors. First and foremost, Rookie of the Year, Kyrie Irving. Other top players from the 2011 NBA Draft include Brandon Knight, Kemba Walker, Klay Thompson, Kawhi Leonard, and Isaiah Thomas.
