During the 2009-10 season, the Los Angeles Lakers once again brought home the NBA title. This time they beat the Boston Celtics in a very tight series that went seven games. Despite this same result for the Lakers, 2009-10 basketball cards saw some significant changes.
Panini, best known as a European sticker company, was getting into the sports card game. Named Panini America, the card company made a big splash when they acquired the exclusive NBA license starting with the 2009-10 season. Panini also signed the number one overall pick, Blake Griffin, to an exclusive deal, preventing his inclusion in any other products. This is a pattern from Panini that continues each year with the incoming rookie class. Panini also announced they had signed an exclusive multi-year deal with Kobe Bryant. 2009-10 is the last year that collectors can find any Topps or Upper Deck products that feature NBA jerseys.
2009-10 was an exciting year to be a basketball collector. Panini rolled out a line of products that included new products, as well as previous brands that had been acquired by Panini. One of the biggest products from Panini was the debut of National Treasures Basketball. This was a high-end product aimed at the same audience as Exquisite Collection Basketball. Also, Topps and Upper Deck had to dump a lot of excess inventory, so many of their 2009-10 products are loaded with content.
Initially, the 2009-10 rookie class was somewhat disappointing. Blake Griffin would miss the entire season due to injury before winning the 2010-11 Rookie of the Year. Other than Brandon Jennings and Tyreke Evans, the 2009-10 Rookie of the Year, most of the other prominent draft picks did not start strong. The years that followed were kind to the 2009-10 rookie class and now it features some of the most popular rookies in the league. Top options include Stephen Curry, James Harden, Blake Griffin, Jrue Holiday, Tyreke Evans, and Brandon Jennings.
