What’s in the Cards for Top 2013 MLB Draft Picks

Topps has promised plenty of 2013 MLB draft picks in 2013 Bowman Draft Picks & Prospects. But that's not out until the latter part of the year. But that doesn't mean that many of the top picks don't have baseball cards. Thanks in large part to comprehensive USA Baseball sets from Panini and Topps over the past couple of years, many of baseball's 2013 first round picks already have a presence in the hobby. This includes plenty of autographs and memorabilia cards.

Leading the way is first overall pick, Mark Appel. The Astros took the pitcher a year after he was selected eighth by the Pirates. Appel opted to head back to school for a final year. Now he's slated to play for his hometown team. Appel is projected to move fairly quickly through the Astros' minor league system and find himself in the majors sooner rather than later.

Appel appeared heavily in 2011 Topps products that focused on the national team. These include autographs in 2011 Bowman Platinum, 2011 Bowman Sterling and 2011 Topps Chrome.

Second pick, Kris Bryant, doesn't have as many cards as Appel but he figures prominently in the 2012 Panini USA Baseball box set. This includes autographs.

Collectors can find baseball cards of the 2013 MLB draft picks in a handful of USA Baseball products. Topps held the license through 2011 and included the stars and stripes in both a standalone box set and a few MLB sets. Panini took over the license beginning in 2012. Their first offerings for the national team were with their MLBPA-licensed sets. Some of these are labeled as 2011 sets but came out in 2012. They've also moved into sets dedicated to USA Baseball. Here's a list of some of the products you can find baseball cards of top 2013 MLB draft picks:

Another source of cards come from the 2012 Perfect Game All-American Classic. Formerly known as the AFLAC All-American Classic, Topps has been producing cards at the event for years. They make them on the spot and have players sign them to be included further down the road in Bowman products. However, players are given their own copies. Many of these make their way to the secondary market, some signed and some not. In nearly every instance, pack-inserted cards are serial numbered. However, 2013 draft picks with Bowman Perfect Game cards haven't been part of an official release yet. All cards come from those given out at the game.
