2009 Upper Deck Icons Baseball Review

Summary

The Good: 2009 Upper Deck Icons Baseball is chock-full of hits and carries a fairly affordable price tag.

The Bad: The quality of the hits is rather poor. The photography and design of the base cards, as well as some of the inserts leave much to be desired.

The Bottom Line: 2009 UD Icons Baseball will be very attractive to a certain segment of collectors, especially those in search of lettermen patch cards and the chance to pull a large number of hits without shelling out a lot of cash to do so. I personally would not fall into that category of collect, and was subsequently not very impressed with the set as a whole. I can't say it's a bad product, but I can't say that it is a particularly good one either.

Design (5.3)
The design of the set as a whole is mediocre and unimpressive. However, there are a few bright spots to take note of, particularly the Future Foundations and Legendary Icons insert sets. The Immortal Lettermen inserts are also fairly well presented.

Value (5.5)
2009 Upper Deck Icons Baseball is directed at the budget minded baseball card collector. To be fair it does offer an impressive five hits per box. Considering that a box runs somewhere in the neighborhood of $70-$80 a pop, and at first glance it's hard not to be impressed. The quality of the hits on the other hand is lacking, and is much more commensurate to the lower mid-level price tag. Of the five hits, two of the hits are unsigned manufactured patches and two are unsigned game used memorabilia cards, leaving only one autographed pull per Hobby box.

Still, fans of manufactured lettermen patch cards should get enough enjoyment out of 2009 Upper Deck Icons Baseball to consider it an above average value.

Checklist (8.9)
It's checklist was 2009 UD Icons Baseball's strongest suit. Despite my feelings regarding the unsigned lettermen patches, I have to tip my hat to Upper Deck for stocking the Immortal Lettermen, and to a lesser extent the standard Lettermen, insert sets with a top notch offering of players. The checklist is consistently strong across the rest of the set, with the exception of the autographs. With only one autographed card per box on average, the thin autograph checklist makes pulling an unknown rookie or semi-star autograph all too likely.

Enjoyability (5.3)
All in all I was disappointed with 2009 UD Icons Baseball. This was my first ever box of a Upper Deck Icons set and based on the feedback I had gotten on the products in the past I was expecting more from it.
