In an era better known for overprinted commons than autographs, Pro Line's "Portraits" Autograph sets tapped into something ahead of it's time, the pack pulled auto. The sets were large and expansive, encompassing autographs of retired legends, stars of the day, player wives, and the real sleeper of the set, NFL Head Coaches!
Both 1991 Pro Line and 1992 Pro Line featured autographed cards of NFL Stars like Troy Aikman, Steve Young, and John Elway. But, there would be plenty of player autographs in subsequent years. The real gem of Pro Line lies in the coaches, who have all but gone extinct in the world of sports cards.
With names like Belichick, Ditka, Gibbs, Shula, Cowher, Seifert, Jimmy Johnson, and Holmgren, the "Portraits" checklist reads like a who's who of NFL Coaching Greats. For those with a sense of humor, the sets also includes some of the NFL's more memorable less than spectacular coaches like Wayne Fontes and Rich Kotite.
