While 2016-17 Upper Deck Ultimate Collection Hockey continues to tweak the brand's formula, collectors can count on three box hits in the high-end NHL release, with at least one being an on-card rookie autograph.

Dropping from five hits per box in the 15-16 product, the 2016-17 Upper Deck Ultimate Collection Hockey checklist still boasts some impressive options along with a lower price point.

Bringing back the standard base, a print run of 99 copies helps set it apart. Parallels include Onyx Black (#/10), Base Autograph (#'d) and Base Onyx Black Autograph (1/1) versions. Combining with the base to average one card per box is the new 50-card Ultimate Introductions Rookies set. It's found in Tier 1 (1:3 boxes), Tier 2 (1:6), Tier 3 (1:9) and Tier 4 (1:12) editions as well as a hobby-only Onyx Black (#/25) parallel.

Providing collectors with a heavy dose of the '16-17 rookie class, most will gravitate to the Ultimate Rookies subset. Among the various first-year options in 2016-17 Upper Deck Ultimate Collection Hockey are Autographed Ultimate Rookies (#/299 or #/99) and Ultimate Rookies Jersey (#/249) offerings, which also feature Autograph Patch (#/49) and Autograph Shield (1/1) cards.

Looking back a decade for design inspiration, the 2006-07 Retro Rookie Autographs (#/199 or #/49) and 2006-07 Retro Rookies Jersey inserts utilize a similar parallel structure as the main rookie set with Autograph Patch (#/25) and Autograph Shield (1/1) cards.

As far as the other inserts to chase in 2016-17 Upper Deck Ultimate Collection Hockey, Ultimate Performers Jersey (#/99 or #/49) and Jersey Autograph (#'d) cards are joined by Keystone Fabrics Jersey (#/99) and Jersey Autograph (#'d) options, along with Numeric Excellence Jersey and Jersey Autograph (#/15) inserts. Each set also offers Premium (#'d) and Tag (1/1) parallels. Providing more low-numbered choices, Debut Threads Autograph Patch (#'d), Signature Laureates (#/25), Signature Material Laureates (#'d), and Signature Material Phenoms (#'d) round out the hits.

2016-17 Upper Deck Ultimate Collection Hockey is also found on ePack.

  1. The good thing with Ultimate is that all the autographs are on card, some of the designs are also pretty good so it definitely qualifies as high end for me.

The bad thing with Ultimate is that it’s very Jersey heavy and those aren’t very popular. A Auto patch is very rare and a difficult hit in Ultimate.
I also feel again that there’s a lot of redundancy within the product. The many subsets and parallels feature the same players (esp. Rookies) again and again.
Expect very little return for your Ultimate cards on the secondary if you don’t hit Matthews or Laine.

Beside the missing hit and most likely a cheaper price I don’t see much difference in the configuration to the previous year. Design of the mock ups looks decent though.

Word of advice, as Ultimate will be available on epack again I strongly recommend to be patient, as the Ultimate quest on epack will generate a lot of very cheap cards on comc at a later stage (just look for the 15-16 version of Ultimate)

  2. Pure Upper-Deck here… 5 cards per pack in 15-16… 4 in 16-17… Keep laughing at their customers…. The only thing this company is taking care off is thinking about making more money each year… this product has no value on the market… lost over 2000$ on a case last year.. Avoid it……

  3. @Eric,
totally understand your frustration. If you want rip it for the high end stuff to get a Matthews (or last year McDavid), you’ll get most likely disappointed.
If you rip packs to put cards on the secondary right away, you’ll get disappointed again.
If this is your intention … you better stay away of all high end products!!! Especially Ultimate, as it’s not ‘The Cup’ it doesn’t give you much in return, a 200$ Box might easily leave you with 20$ of secondary value (happened to me as well with the 15-16 version).

Nevertheless it’s not’s UD’s fault that the secondary doesn’t appreciate 99% of the Ultimate Collection cards (but still many are cracking), it’s a good product in general as you get what’s advertised.

Again, cards are nice, but I totally agree, you’ll feel like a fool if you go for boxes/cases afterwards, let the others take the losses and hunt the singles on the secondary …
