A mainstay in football, Topps Supreme made its baseball debut in 2013 but as an Asian-exclusive. 2014 Topps Supreme Baseball brings the brand to North America. Every card in the product is an autograph numbered to 50 or less.

2014 Topps Supreme Baseball boxes come with two cards. Autographed Retired and Veteran Stars have a look that makes them look similar to high-end base cards. Simply Supreme Autographs flip to a horizontal layout. Supreme Styling Autographs are highlighted by a die-cut design. All three of these sets have multiple levels of parallels including Green, Sepia, Purple, Blue, Orange (#/15), Red (#/10), Black (#/5), Printing Plates and Supreme (1/1).

Supreme Scope Autographed Relics make their debut in the product. They feature a layered design that's reminiscent of Topps Strata or Panini's Silhouettes. The combine a die-cut player image, a signature and a massive relic swatch. A guaranteed case hit, the checklist includes veterans, retired players and rookies. Parallels include Platinum Patch (#/10) and Supreme Patch (1/1).

2014 Topps Supreme Baseball also has standard Autographed Patch Relics (#/25) that have smaller patch pieces than those found on the Scope hits. These also have Platinum (#/5) and Supreme (1/1) parallels.

Topps will include a variety of dual and triple autographs. Among them are Dual Autograph Jumbo Patch Relic Book Cards (#/10) that have signatures and patch pieces from two players.

Product Configuration: 1 pack per box, 2 cards per pack
Price Point: High-End Baseball Card
Target Audience: Hit Seekers, Autograph Collectors

2014 Topps Supreme Baseball Product Review

Reviewed by Ryan Cracknell

Good: Everything’s an autograph, nice designs.

Bad: Every autograph is a sticker, checklist could be much stronger.

The Bottom Line: 2014 Topps Supreme Baseball keeps it simple with two major selling points — every card has an autograph and every card is numbered to 50 or less. Despite this, I didn’t get the feeling that Supreme lived up to its name. Something was missing from it, at least as a product to bust by the box.

Staff Rating:
3.0 / 5.0

Card Design: 3.4/5.0

I'm torn in a lot of ways with Supreme’s design. At a glance they’re very strong. But, they use stickers. But, those stickers are integrated nicely and not overly noticeable. But they’re still stickers.

Beyond the signatures, the base autograph and die-cut Supreme Stylings cards I pulled have a nice look to them. The etched gold foil highlights stand out. At the same time, it’s like I’ve seen these designs before. The arcs on the base autographs are a lot like those from Five Star and Tier One. Supreme Stylings are more distinct thanks to their die-cuts, but the art deco lines harken back earlier this year to Tribute as well. While there’s nothing wrong with the look in this regard, it would be nice to see a little more variety across a product year.

Checklist: 3.0/5.0

2014 Topps Supreme Baseball has some great signatures in it. It also has Andrew Heaney and Rafael Montero. The checklist is somewhat intriguing but when you look a little closer and notice that most of the lesser signers have multiple cards in the same sections.

While the “no card numbered higher than” 50 does make for individual card rarity, there are still plenty of parallels that, in a sense, bring that number higher. Yes, it’s a different card, but there isn’t much different between a regular base autograph numbered to 50 and a Green parallel numbered to 45. In fact, if you add up the regular versions and all the parallels for the base autographs, there are more than 200 total for each card (if they’re not short printed). Throw in the fact that some players are doubled up and, all of a sudden, that’s a lot of autographs.

Value: 2.7/5.0

With just two cards per box, there’s an inherent risk to anyone opening this product. The risk is pretty big with this one as well given the fact that the majority of signers are of the second-tier variety. That’s normal but most products also have other cards that have help balance things out. If you're on the fence about the product, give the checklist a heavy look.

The Fun Factor: 3.0/5.0

Supreme is refreshingly basic. There is some variety but not a lot. Excluding parallels, all the different types of autographs have their own distinct theme or design. Not a lot of products in any sport can say that.

But there’s the feeling with Supreme about it being a high-end product that focuses exclusively on stickers and relies on a largely lacklustre checklist. Even with stickers that are integrated as well as they have been here, to me they’re inferior to an on-card signature. It stings a little more when Topps has, overall, done a great job of making hard-signed cards a priority this year. Stickers still exist, but they’re becoming the exception in most product rather than the rule.

If this were presented as a more affordable product (one that it quickly is to a certain extent with dropping wax prices), the feeling would be a little different. As something to try and grab affordable autographs off the secondary market, Supreme is solid. However, as it’s presented, I think there needs to be a little something extra.

  1. Like last year they all are sticker auto’s and if this is like last year there was major chipping issues.
    Topps Supreme = Weak Sauce

  2. Topps is just throwing out crap now. Most of it is high end.

  3. ‘high-end’ stickers? pass.

  4. I tend to agree with the first two commenters. We don’t need yet another high-end product from Topps. We need a good product from Topps that doesn’t have 80 different gimmicky short-prints, that doesn’t have 7 cards of the same 12 players, and that isn’t driven entirely by relics, autographs, and inserts. I mean, is that too much to ask?

  5. Wow. I was stoked when my LHS secured a trio of these boxes; I mean after all, the Football release was really well-received.
This product, however, appears to have been assembled with no more than 6 minutes of thought and is comprised of curious athletes, to say the least.
Topps keeps jamming sticker autos down our hobby-lovin’ throats…with no regard for our expressed desire for hard autos.
Topps Tier One (last 2 years), ’13 Triple Threads and Tribute were just such let-downs.
No more Topps for me. Panini is just killing it now.

  6. Attn: Topps

NO ONE…wants your sticker autographs for $90 packs

  7. Wow, 2 autos/2 cards? THAT’S the product?

Topps has absolutely ZERO regard for the collector, and less regard for the LHS owner who is forced to purchase this garbage in order to be eligible for the “better Topps releases.” Now there’s an oxymoron if ever there was.

Topps is just chucking crap out into the hobby-sphere. They couldn’t make it any easier for Panini to rule the hobby world, and that lack of competition will permit Panini to grow complacent.

  8. Jamey Feuer » What card company doesn’t have a similar configuration for a product though? Panini released Playbook Football as two-card box last week – 1 book card that may or may not have an autograph and either a memorabilia or an autograph.

  9. I think the issue here is that this product does not really have a market. For the hit seeker high-end collectors this product does not really have enough bang. Most of these collectors are not really looking for sticker autos at all. I would put myself in this group and I don’t really have any interest in a sticker auto of anyone. Especially at the price point of this product. The price point and nature of the two card no base/inserts set probably puts it out of the general true Topps Series collectors.
To Ryan’s point of other companies having a similar product. Unlike other sports the best rookies/prospect cards for baseball are in Bowman and Bowman Chrome. It is weird but the higher price point products don’t yield the highest priced rookies like Football and Hockey. Most of the reason why Playbook works and this really doesn’t is the rookies are worth more than lower end products where as in baseball they are not. Bowman baseball prospect/rookies are king and true RC cards are mostly an after thought to collectors and not really the player’s valuable RC card. Baseball cards like the sport itself is different then other sports (ex. hearing about top prospects in an organization several years before they play a game and getting their cards around that time period as well). To sum up my rant most people don’t want to spend good money on stickers and Baseball cards are weird they are not like other card markets so card companies should not mimic what has been successful with other sport product lines.

  10. Paid $59.00 for the box. 3 cards in the box. Only 1 was sticker auto.
