Topps Inception is a relatively new brand in the market, first introduced in the Topps 2011 football category. The product was designed as a mid-ranged product guaranteed to include two (2) autographs and one (1) relic card per box. One of the key selling points of the product was the inclusion of hard signed, rookie autographs, always a key feature for collectors.

Developing an Identity

While new brands have the luxury of having nothing to be compared to, the challenge lies in continuing to develop a product that delivers value and substance for collectors while developing its own brand identity in a crowded marketplace. In 2012, Topps re-issued the brand in football. Still containing on card rookie autographs, the pack-out configuration maintained the two (2) autographs but dropped the relic card. There was also no change in the price point. The 2012 version capitalized on the strong rookie class with Robert Griffin III and Andrew Luck.

2013 and Beyond

The Inception brand is scheduled for 2013 to be released in the Bowman family of baseball products as well as making a return to football . Further adjustments have been made to the value equation and price point as the brand still seeks to find the resonating sweet spot with collectors.
