Bowman Sterling

The Bowman Sterling brand, manufactured by Topps, is an ultra-premium product that was first introduced to the market in 2004. Designed to capitalize on the growing interest of prospect collecting, this baseball product was loaded with autographs and relic cards. Designed as a hobby exclusive, boxes contained: twelve (12) First-Year Player cards, six (6) Veteran Relic cards, six (6) First-Year Player Autographed card, and six (6) First-Year Player Prospect Autographed cards. In addition, boxes included an individually wrapped bonus in either a Black Parallel, 1-of-1, Red Parallel, or Autographed Bowman Originals card, inserted into every box as a box loader. Despite it’s almost $400 price tag, it was met with open arms by collectors. Key rookies in the set included: Homer Bailey, Conor Jackson, Felix Hernandez, Huston Street, Joey Gathright, Kurt Suzuki, Matt Bush, Faust Carmona, Jeremy Sowers, Reid Brignac, Mitch Einerston, Matt Tuiasosopo, Philip Hughes, Scott Kazmir, Trevor Plouffe, Zach Duke, and Thomas Diamond.

Brand Development

Since its inception, the Bowman Sterling brand has had only minor tweaks made to its product configuration. Sticking true to the original concept of being primarily a prospect and rookie product, the brand made the inevitable crossover to the always popular football card category in 2006. Once again relying on its ultra-premium pack-out configuration, every hobby box contained 6 packs with each pack yielding: (one) 1 Autographed Rookie Card, (1) Rookie Relic Card, one (1) Veteran Relic Card, and two (2) Rookie Cards. That year’s NFL Draft class, ended up being one of the most hyped (and under-performing) in the history of the hobby but included top prospects: Reggie Bush, Santonio Holmes, Vince Young, Devin Hester, Joseph Addai, Greg Jennings, Tarvaris Jackson, AJ Hawk, and Leon Washington. As a result, the secondary market value for some of the more highly touted players reached astronomical proportions before plummeting back to reality in the following years.

The Tradition Continues

Now celebrating it’s 9th year in baseball and 7th in football, details are already available on the upcoming 2013 versions in both football, which releases in October of this year and baseball which is scheduled for a December release.
