You Can't Put A Book Value on Memories

You Can't Put A Book Value on Memories

Hey, how's it going? I heard you were planning on selling your collection of baseball cards from your childhood. There's probably a couple of things you should know before you put a price on your childhood memories.

Do you remember how happy you were when you pulled that 1987 Topps Jose Canseco? It was easily the happiest day of your life up to that point. You sure had me fooled but I guess all the signs were right in plain view because by the time you pulled Jose's 1988 Topps card you barely flinched and by 1989 your cards had been "stored" in the attic for some day in 2010 when you could dig them out and buy yourself a nice sports card or better yet, put a down payment on that condo by the beach you always wanted.

I take it you haven't watched much baseball since the 80's? Unfortunately, most of the stars of your time are now on a very bad list which killed most of the chances you had of selling your collection and as far as the fact that they are officially "vintage"…well, hate to spoil it for you but 1987 Topps isn't 1952 Topps. They learned their mistakes and made sure every children in the world could have their fill of baseball cards which means that for every one set you managed to pull together, there are thousands more all over the Internet, on eBay, in garage sales, stored away in garages, and taking up space all over the United States.

At this point your best bet is to pull out your investment and flip through each and every card. Go ahead and pull them out of the protective pages because this is important. Find the cards that meant most to you and sit and stare at them for a while. Does it bring back some of your childhood? It should take you back to a better time when all that mattered was how clean your room was and how much your allowance would be that week.

My friend, those memories are worth more than anything you will make off those cards.

  1. Same for all sports cards of that era. We need a good name for that era of over production.
