Tuesday afternoon officials from the New York Yankees announced what promises to be the largest sports memorabilia yard sale of 2009. The event is being held to liquidate baseball memorabilia salvaged from the now defunct Yankee Stadium. The stadium is currently scheduled to be demolished next month.
Collectors and fans will be able to purchase an incredible selection of Yankee Stadium Memorabilia at the sale, including stadium seats, sod, dirt, foul poles, bases and lockers. Big ticket items being sold include pieces of the ornate frieze, or facade, that was displayed over the bleacher wall, ticket booths, turnstiles and various items from the clubhouses.
Yankees COO Lonn Trost talked about the upcoming event at a recent press conference, "This is a chance to own a piece of history, a piece of Yankee Stadium."
A pair of stadium seats from the original Yankee Stadium can be had for $1,499. Budget conscious individuals will also have a number of options at their disposal. Single bleacher seats will cost $399, and a pair of bleacher seats will sport a $699 price tag. A small display case of freeze dried grass from Yankee Stadium will go for $80, and sections of sod can be purchased from $120 to $280 depending on size.
All Yankee Stadium Memorabilia sold will be authenticated by the Yankees and Major League Baseball and can be purchased through a variety of websites such as yankees.com, mlb.com, and eBay. Some of the memorabilia, particularly the higher end items, will be sold via online auction on Steiner Sports' Website. The auction has a scheduled closing date of July 24th.
There were roughly 56,000 seats in the old stadium, which also hosted papal visits, New York Giants football games and boxing title fights among other big events. Steiner Sports, who the Yankees have hired to assist them in selling their massive influx of Yankee Stadium Memorabilia, estimates that only about 40,000 of these seats will be sellable after they are treated to mitigate the dangers of the lead paint contained on them.
