Weekly Wildcard – 9/22/08

Chances are if you have been collecting sports cards for any length of time, you have seen your share of strange and ridiculous cards.  These cards prompted you to wonder how on earth they escaped past quality control at the manufacturing plant.  This weekly column pays homage to just these types of cards.  Ranging from the hilarious, to the disturbing, to the just plain weird, these “Wild Cards” make us question everything we thought we knew about sports cards.  Each week we will spotlight a different “Wild Card” from one of the 4 major sports - hockey, baseball, football, basketball.

This is probably the funniest card ever produced of a batter being hit by a pitch.  As if the front of the card was not enough to capture the pain and terror on Argenis' face, Just Minors gave us an additional close upon the back to bring come the point.  Adding to the mystique surrounding the card, the physics are all off.  It appears that Argenis is either being pelted from behind with the baseball by an employee of Just Minors to liven the otherwise bland Argenis up a bit prior to his picture being taken by the card.  We salute you Argenis!

If you would like to submit a card for consideration as our Weekly Wild Card simply email a scanned picture of the card (no wider then 300 pixels) to us, along with a brief one paragraph description of why you think the card should be our weekly pick.  Please include “Weekly Wild Card Submission” in the subject line of your email.  Submissions should be made to editor@cardboardconnection.com .  Thanks for your support!

About the Author

Mike Smeth is the Owner of The Cardboard Connection. After collecting baseball cards for much of his youth, he took a 12-year hiatus from the hobby. One muggy summer day in 2006 he unexpectedly came across his childhood baseball card collection while packing up for an upcoming move. With every intention of selling them on Craigslist, Mike set the cards aside and began sorting through them to list. Somewhere between the 3rd and 4th box, he rediscovered his passion for collecting sports cards and memorabilia, and hasn't looked back since.
