T3: Rise of the Redemption

Sorry for the Terminator reference, but its true. In 1911 the American Tobacco Company created one of the world's first known baseball card redemption programs.  Those who were fortunate enough to collect enough redemption coupons could exchange them for T3 Cabinet baseball cards.  The American Tobacco Company also pioneered the concept of mailing in redemption coupons to obtain baseball cards.

I think it is just amazing that these cards have survived for almost a century. In those times, cards were considered disposable items to reinforce cigarette packs. When someone would open a new pack of cigarettes, they would usually throw away the card inside. In 1911, it would take a lot for someone to save up the coupons and then remember to mail them in. Each card measures 5 ¾” x 8” and to this day, have been theonly known cabinet sized tobacco cards to have been made. To obtain a cabinet card, you would need around 10 to 25 coupons based on where you received the coupon from.

Most of the cards in the set have a checklist on the back, but some of the harder to find cards have the Turkey Red ad. The checklist includes some of the best players of the time such as Christy Mathewson, Walter Johnson, John McGraw, and Ty Cobb. Product checklists of today sometimes don’t include players of that magnitude. Today, you can expect to find these cards worth well into the thousands. The T3 design is one of the most colorful and artistic early 20th century sets to complete. Card manufacturers of today should use the American Tobacco Company as a model of how to operate a redemption program.

In today’s hobby, collectors can wait months, even years without receiving the card they were promised. Sometimes after all the waiting, collectors end up with a replacement anyway. Maybe today’s card manufacturers need to make things a little less complicated, and start operating as if they were back in 1911.

Upper Deck Announces 2008-09 NHL Fleer Ultra Rookie Redemptions

Upper Deck has announced the official list of rookie redemptions for 2008-09 NHL Fleer Ultra. For those unfamiliar with why so many hockey card products provide rookie cards via redemption rather then by placing them in packs, let me explain. Unlike the other Major Professional Sports Leagues, the NHL doesn't permit trading card companies to produce cards of NHL Rookies until they first get some on-the-ice action in a NHL Game. In the eternal struggle between card companies to see who can produce the season's first sports card products this policy spells trouble for hockey card collectors. Those who pounce on the opportunity to purchase early season hockey card releases such as 2008-09 NHL Fleer Ultra will find redemption cards in place of rookie cards. To their credit, the major sports card companies have made the redemption process more convenient by digitizing and streamlining the redemption process, but nothing beats the feeling (and the simplicity) of pulling a real card from a pack.

The final checklist of rookie redemptions for 2008-09 NHL Fleer Ultra is as follows:

Exchange # Player Team Card #
RED1 Steven Stamkos Lightning 251
RED2 Fabian Brunnstrom Stars 252
RED3 Jakub Voracek Blue Jackets 253
RED4 Blake Wheeler Bruins 254
RED5 Brandon Sutter Hurricanes 255
RED6 Zach Boychuk Hurricanes 256
RED7 Alex Pietrangelo Blues 257
RED8 Zach Bogiosian Thrashers 258
RED9 Drew Doughty Kings 259
RED10 Luke Schenn Maple Leafs 260
RED11 T.J. Oshie Blues 261
RED12 Mikkel Boedker Coyotes 262
RED13 Nikita Filatov Blue Jackets 263
RED14 James Neal Stars 264
RED15 Colton Gillies Wild 265
RED16 Petr Vrana Devils 266
RED17 Luca Sbisa Flyers 267
RED18 Patric Hornqvist Predators 268
RED19 Andreas Nodl Flyers 269
RED20 Nikolai Kulemin Maple Leafs 270
RED21 Michael Frolik Panthers 271

Upper Deck plans to fulfill all redemption requests by February of 2009.

Upper Deck Announces Obama Lettermen Redemptions

Following his nomination in last Tuesday's Presidential Election, many constituents of President Elect Barack Obama are clamoring to purchase all things Obama.  Seeking to capitalize on Obamamania, Upper Deck issued a press release early Monday announcing that Obama would be the subject depicted on their line of “Presidential Lettermen” redemption cards.

“Presidential Letterman” redemption cards were randomly inserted into packs of 2008 Upper Deck Icons Football, which has been on the market since late August.  Each "Presidential Letterman" redemption card can be redeemed for one random letter.  Collectors who acquire multiple redemption cards could eventually spell out either “OBAMA” or “PRESIDENT” or both.  Upper Deck plans to fulfill redemption orders sometime in early January 2009, shortly before Obama is sworn in to office.

Final 2008 SPx Baseball Autograph Redemptions Announced

On Tuesday evening Upper Deck announced the final two players in the 2008 SPx Baseball Mystery Autograph Redemption Program.  Arizona Diamondbacks Pitcher Max Scherzer and Chicago White Sox Rookie Phenom Alexei Ramirez are the final two players to be included in the 2008 SPx Baseball Mystery Autograph Redemption Program, out of a total of seven.

During his 2008 Rookie Campaign, Max Scherer posted an impressive 3.05 ERA and 66 Srike Outs in 56 Innings of work.   In his first MLB appearance he threw 4 1/3 perfect innings and set a new league record for the most consecutive batters retired (13) in a MLB debut. Scherzer will be card #150 in the set or “RR5” for the redemption.

Alexei Ramirez roze up from relative obscurity to become a legitimate Rookie of The Year Contender that helped guide the White Soxs to the playoffs down the stretch.  His impressive display of hitting power and speed led to him being nicknamed "The Cuban Missile”. The talented second baseman hit .290 this season with 21 home runs, 77 RBI's, and 13 stolen bases in 480 At Bats.  Ramirez will be card #152 in the set or “RR7” for the redemption.

The completed checklist for the 2008 SPx Autograph Mystery Redemption Set is as follows:

RR1 Jay Bruce Cincinnati Reds #146
RR2 Carlos Gonzalez Oakland Athletics #147
RR3 Evan Longoria Tampa Bay Rays #148
RR4 Collin Balester Washington Nationals #149
RR5 Max Scherzer Arizona Diamondbacks #150
RR6 Clayton Kershaw Los Angeles Dodgers #151
RR7 Alexei Ramirez Chicago White Sox #152

Gabriel Garcia, Upper Deck’s associate brand manager of Baseball Products, had this to say about recently completed redemption set, “We worked hard to provide collectors with the best prospects available and that’s clear since three of the seven players we picked were playing in October.  A program like this allows us to pull out all the stops to find the best rookies available for our die-hard baseball fans.”

Donruss To Ship 07 Elite Chris Davis Redemption Autographs

Donruss announced late Monday afternoon that those collectors lucky enough to have pulled and then redeemed Autograph Redemption Card #136 from 2007 Elite Extra Edition Baseball should expect to receive their cards over the next few weeks.  Donruss originally intended the player for this redemption to be basketball player D.J. Strawberry, but after some logistical difficulties they decided to have Texas Rangers Rookie Phenom Chris Davis take his place.

Chris Davis opened the 2008 season at Double-A Frisco, and was quickly promoted to Triple-A Oklahoma after only 46 games.  During his stay with these two Minor League teams, Davis boasted an incredible .333 average with 23 home runs and 73 RBI in only 297 at-bats.  Davis has showed no signs of slowing down since reaching the Majors, maintaing a respectible .275 average with 14 HR and 42 RBI for the Rangers.
