Donruss Releases Statement Regarding Wade Miley / Razor Controversy

Donruss released a statement early Tuesday regarding their illicit inclusion of Wade Miley cards inside boxes of their recently released 2008 Prime Cuts IV Baseball Card Product.  Miley signed an exclusive 3 year contract with industry newcommer Razor Entertainment in 2008 which expressively forbade Miley's inclusion in any products not produced by Razor.

Donruss explained their side of the situation via their written press release:

"Due to a production error at the time of pack-out, some 31 copies of a Wade Miley card mistakenly were inserted into packs of 2008 Playoff Prime Cuts Baseball.

Donruss officials believed they had a deal with Miley during the production cycle of Prime Cuts, but when it became apparent Miley was exclusive property of another manufacturer, Donruss pulled Miley cards before pack-out. "These few just slipped by," a Donruss representative said. "It's an honest mistake, and one we regret."

There are no Miley autograph redemption cards."

Arizona Fall League Wrap Up

The AFL wrapped up its regular season Thursday night with the Mesa Solar Sox and Phoenix Desert Dogs winning their respective divisions.  Mesa and Phoenix will square up for a championship game putting the finishing touches on a spectacular AFL season.  Much like I did with the Hawaiian Winter League wrap up, I have chosen 10 offensive performers who stood out from the pack this season.

Top Offensive Performances

10.) Wes Hodges - Cleveland Indians 3B

.349/.368/.549  6 HR 26 RBI

Hodges' offense has been outstanding since the Indians selected him in the 2nd round of the '06 draft out of Georgia Tech.  Hodges has above average power and a smooth right handed swing that should hit for a good average at the MLB level.  Defensively, Hodges struggled at 3B all season making 28 errors and his struggles continued in the AFL.  Hodges will likely need to move to 1B where his 18-22 HR power becomes marginalized quite a bit.  Offensively, his game is quite similar to that of current Indians 1B/DH Ryan Garko.  Hodges has autographed 1st year cards in the 2007 Bowman Chrome that sell for $7-10 each.

9.) Scott Cousins - Florida Marlins OF

.297/.385/.624  6 HR 33 RBI 28 R

Cousins started the AFL season slow, but really heated up in the second half of the season.  Cousins has considerable tools and athleticism.  Some who have watched him compares his left handed swing with that of Braves future HOF'er Chipper Jones.  Cousins main detractor has been his ability to stay healthy as he was limited to just 78 games this season at High-A Jupiter and AA Carolina.  Cousins is one of many talented OF in the Marlins' organization which makes his future somewhat uncertain.  Cousins is a relatively unknown commodity right now, though, which makes his 2006 Bowman Chrome refractors ($2-3) and 2008 Bowman Chrome autographs ($3.50-5.00) low cost purchases.

8.) Jeff Larish - Detroit Tigers 1B

.331/.410/.548  6 HR 29 RBI 34 R (18 BB/25 K)

Larish spent time between AAA Toledo and Detroit this season belting 23 HR and 80 RBI.  The Tigers used him at both 1B and 3B as well as DH as a left-hand hitting platoon player.  Jeff has above average power and he has shown the ability in the past to work counts and draw walks.  Larish will never hit for a high average at the big league level which will likely relegate him to the role of part time player.  At 26 years old, there is not much hope for Larish to develop into much more.

7.) Drew Sutton - Houston Astros 2B/SS/3B

.315/.426/.611  7 HR  24 RBI 32 R (24 BB/31 K)

Sutton enjoyed his greatest season as a pro hitting .317 with 20 HR 69 RBI 20 SB and102 runs scored at AA Corpus Christi.  Additionally, Sutton has impeccable plate discipline, grinding out 100 BB between AA and the AFL this season.  Sutton can play any infield position, though he profiles best as a 2B.  Kaz Matsui is signed through the 2010 season, though Sutton should get his fair share of playing time as a super utility guy.  Sutton is the best middle infield prospect prospect in the truly horrible Houston farm system.  His bat is ready and it is high time that a major manufacturer produces his 1st year cards.

6.) Rhyne Hughes - Tampa Bay Rays 1B

.394/.432/.652  5 HR 27 RBI 12 doubles

Hughes is an older prospect who has below average power as a 1B and subpar plate discipline.  That said, he had a fine AFL campaign and should play next season at AAA Durham.  His 2008 Bowman Chrome cards are readily available for 10-25 cent each, though his long term values should not rise much, if at all, above those totals.

5.) Mike McKenry - Colorado Rockies C

.369/.430/.652   9 HR 25 RBI

McKenry finished second in the AFL in HR's and his 18 HR at High-A Modesto shows that he profiles to be a power hitting catcher at the major league level.  He is built like a brick at 5-9 210 lb. and he has solid plate discipline, though he strikes out often.  His average took a dip during the regular season in the hitter-friendly California League though his fine AFL showing gives me the notion that this may have been an aberration.  Defensively, McKenry needs improvement blocking balls, though his strong arm and solid athleticism gives reason to believe that he will improve.  Thought he still a couple seasons away, McKenry is worth keeping an eye on.

4.) Jason Donald - Philadelphia Phillies SS/2B

.407/.476/.747  5 HR 17 RBI 23 R 12 doubles

Donald's track record of success seems to increase with each new challenge.  Donald had a successful AA season at Reading hitting .307 with 14 HR 57 RBI before heading to Beijing to lead Team USA to the Bronze Medal in the '08 Olympics.  Donald's opportunity to play with the Phillies was thought to be limited as he had all-stars Jimmy Rollins and Chase Utley ahead of him.  How things have changed.  Chase Utley is scheduled to have hip surgery which should keep him out until at least mid-June.  Donald will compete with veteran utility man Eric Bruntlett for a majority of the playing time.  Donald reminds me of Red Sox SS Jed Lowrie and his impact could be quite similar come April.

3.) Logan Morrison - Florida Marlins 1B

.404/.444/.667  5 HR  29 RBI  23 R

Morrison has drawn rave reviews from anyone who has seen him play in person.  Morrison has a sweet left-handed swing that generates easy power to all fields.  There has been some conjecture that Morrison may get an opportunity to earn a roster spot with the Marlins now since the trade of Mike Jacobs.  He'll get a long look in spring training, but should start the '09 season at AA Jacksonville.  Make no mistake, Morrison is Florida's 1B of the future.  Currently, Morrison has 1st year autos in the 2008 Donruss Threads set and is preliminarily slated to have an auto in the upcoming Bowman Chrome Draft set.  If this does in fact happen, it will be one of the most highly sought after cards in the 2008 Bowman Draft Picks & Prospects set.

2.) Tyler Flowers - Atlanta Braves C/1B

.387/.460/.973  12 HR  23 RBI  25 R

That's right, that .973 number up there is his SLG% and not his OPS%.  Flowers' stock has increases significantly this fall.  Flowers is a massive 6-4 245 lb. power hitter with top notch plate discipline and decent athleticism.  The Braves moved Flowers behind the plate full time this season and he has worked hard to refine his receiving skills.  Flowers has a strong arm and decent athleticism that could play well at a corner infield position should he continue to struggle behind the plate.  Watch to see what the Braves organization decides to do with him at AA Mississippi this next season.  I would like to see him get some time at 3B as Chipper Jones' eventual replacement.  The thought of having a corner infield of Flowers and Freddie Freeman within the next couple of years is enough to make any Braves fan salivate.  Flowers' bat makes him a potential All-Star no matter where he plays and his big league debut should happen in early 2010.  Flowers has 1st year autographs in the 2008 Bowman Threads set and they are red hot right now selling for $30-35 on eBay.

1.) Eric Young Jr. - Colorado Rockies OF

.430/.504/.640  5 HR  20 RBI  20 SB  37 R  (12 BB/14 K)

Young has vaulted himself to the top tier of Colorado's prospect chart with his game changing speed and surprising boost in power.  Young overcame some early season injuries to bat .290 with 3 HR 36 RBI and 46 SB.  Young's defense at 2B improved drastically from seasons past, though many believe that he will eventually be a good OF with plus-plus range.  Watch to see how the Rockies decide to use him in spring training as that should give bearing to where his future destination will be.  Young has more value as a 2B with top of the order speed and plate discipline.  Young's cards in the various 2007 Bowman sets can all be had for under $1 each and seem like solid values.

2005 Bowman Chrome Draft—5 Just Missed Prospects

I have been blogging about baseball card prospects since this past June and I am humbled by the overwhelmingly positive responses I get from other collectors in this great industry who have put great stock into my various player and market analyses.  I figure that before my head gets any fatter than it already is, I must set the record straight and expose some of the skeletons in my closet that I have accumulated over the years.

When the 2005 Bowman Draft and Chrome product came out, I was blown away by the depth of player quality on the list.  As people were clammoring for Stephen Drew, Ryan Zimmerman, and Jered Weaver autos, I was stockpiling Ryan Braun, Jay Bruce , and Clay Buchholz cards.

Now, as recent history has shown, this move has paid dividends...and student loans...and a nice little family get-away to Ocean Shores, WA.  While those few hits provided a fair financial windfall, there were also 5 prolific misses for me in this set that still haunt me every time I thumb through my prospects box.  I have placed them in order from least to most painful.

5.) Mike Costanzo---Baltimore Orioles 3B

Costanzo, out of Coastal Carolina College was touted by Beckett Baseball Monthly as being a David Wright clone.  Tall, powerfully built, athletic, and adept at the hot corner, Costanzo seemed to be on the fast track to Philly.  I purchased 20 card chrome lots like they were going out of style and thought that, at a buck each, I would soon be realizing exponential profits.  In all of my excitement, I failed to give more notice to the fact that Costanzo strikes out---a lot.  Over the past two seasons, Costanzo has punched out over 300 times, which has dipped his average into the .260-.270 range.  Comparisons to David Wright were just silly.  Wright is a perennial .300 hitter with 30/30 numbers and the face of the New York Mets franchise.  Costanzo's career high for HR has been 27, is no threat on the basepaths, and is already with his 3rd franchise.  Perhaps Costanzo will be a late bloomer who constructs a nice 5-7 season stretch in the major leagues, but I am disappointed with the overall rawness of his game and some rumblings of his reluctance to refine his approach.  My one glint of optimism is that the Orioles organization has a very bright future and aging 3B Melvin Mora is not going to be a part of it much longer.  With no other 3B in front of him, the window is open for Costanzo to step in, but at age 25, it won't be open for much longer.

4.) John Drennen---Cleveland Indians OF

John Drennen was a late 1st round pick by the Cleveland Indians in '05.  Touted as a future power hitting CF, Drennen made the 2004 AFLAC  All-American team with Cameron Maybin and Justin Upton.  Drennen hit 17 HR his senior season and evoked comparisons to Brian Giles.  Early in his minor league career, Drennen made national news by clubbing a HR off of Roger Clemens in a Low-A rehab game.  I recall buying a huge lot of Drennens that included several refractors, Rookie Cup autos, and about 100 chrome cards.  At the time, I thought I had received the steal of the century, though it has been Drennen that has stolen my joy.  Last year, he repeated High-A Kinston and stunk it up hitting .239 with 3 HR and 39 RBI in 460 AB.  He is still just 22 years old, though I hold little to no hope for him to figure things out.

3.) Jeff Clement---Seattle Mariners C

Now we are starting to enter more painful territory.  Clement was a serious overdraft by the Bill Bavasi-cursed M's organization as they let players like Ryan Braun, Troy Tulowitzki, Jay Bruce, and many others pass to teams further down the list.  True, Jeff was an All-American catcher at USC and has light tower power potential, though an injury-marred senior season dropped his mock draft status to a low 1st round pick.  Regardless,  I was seduced by the thought that he would be a perennial threat to hit 30 HR as the AL's version of Mike Piazza.  Clement has performed well throughout the minor leagues and his late season audition with the M's in 2007 was promising, as he belted two long HR in late September to win ballgames.  This season's performance with the M's was a different story.  Clement has shown that he is severely overmatched by any pitch that has a bend to it and his play behind the plate is embarrassing.  I have long maintained that he is best suited to be a 1B or DH, though the M's organization is adamant about keeping him as a catcher (perhaps this latest knee surgery will change their tune).  Maybe it is the M's fan in me that believes that Clement can still fulfill his post draft potential, but his current performance as well as an increasing resemblance to a game of Operation (remember that one?) serve as tear drops to my flickering flame of hope.

2.) Brent Lillibridge---Atlanta Braves SS

Watching Lillibridge with the University of Washington, I saw a bursting bundle of energy reminiscent of fellow Pac-10 alum Dustin Pedroia.  Lillibridge had incredible speed that he utilized at both SS and CF.  Lillibridge split his first full season between Low-A Hickory and High-A Lynchburg hitting .304 with 13 HR 71 RBI 52 SB and 106 runs scored.  These numbers made him a key prospect in the trade that sent Adam LaRoche from Atlanta to Pittsburgh.  At this point, I thought Lillibridge was on the fast track to Turner Field, but a drop off in production at AA Mississippi followed by an even worse AAA season at Richmond leaves me with over 100 chrome Lillibridge cards (granted, I got each of them in the 20-30 cent range).    Lillibridge's walk total from 2006 to 2007 was cut in half while his K totals remained the same.  My gut tells me that he was polished enough to exploit less experienced pitching, but not talented enough to continue the same rate of success against more advanced players.  This, alas, is the plight of many marginal college prospects who captivate your heart at lower levels and tear it out at higher ones.  Lillibridge's future with the Braves is bleak.  Yunel Escobar looks to be the real deal in Atlanta and there is way too much talent in the farm system (Jordan Schafer, Jason Heyward, Brandon Jones etc...) to hope for a regular outfield spot.  Lillibridge seems destined to be a utility player rather than a catalytic lead-off hitter, and at age 25, his best tool, speed, is just a few years away from a tumultuous downturn.

1.) Travis Buck---Oakland A's OF

The blend of size, athleticism, and plate discipline made the Arizona State alum an appetizing '05 1st round selection for the A's.  Buck continued to show his high average, good plate discipline and budding power potential by hitting over .300 at each stop in his rapid ascention through the minor leagues.  I wanted to jump on Buck's cards early as his low HR totals, but high 2B totals were a prime indicator that he would soon learn to effectively leverage his powerful 6-3 210 lb. frame into 20-25 HR per season.  I snatched up his 2005 Topps Traded Chrome Autos at $6-8 each like candy and pretty soon had over 30 of them.  Buck then had a stellar 2007 Spring Training and made the A's Opening Day lineup.  I know what you are thinking...SELL NOW!  Well, I sold a couple for $30.00 each, but was seduced by the notion that he could earn Rookie of the Year accolades, pushinig that card into the $50-75 range.  Sorry Michael Douglas, greed is NOT a good thing.  Buck injured himself numerous times in '07 and the market for his cards bottomed out.  '08 has been a carbon copy of '07 though his late season comeback leaves a smidgen of optimism for a future recovery.  Buck will be 25 in '09, but with all of his nagging injuries, he may as well be 35.  Regardless, I still love T-Buck and have an autographed..err...vested interest in his ability to produce just one healthy productive season.

Razor Announces Biggest Prospect Signing Yet

Having already purchased the exclusive rights to 15 of the 17 top 2008 MLB Draft Picks there wasn't much room for them to further improve their upcoming release of 2008 Razor Signature Series Baseball - or so we thought.  In an interview with Beckett earlier this week, Razor announced what is arguably their biggest signing yet.  The newest member of Razor's exclusive roster of prospects is Matt Wieters, Baseball America's 2008 Minor League Player of the Year.  Razor has signed Wieters to an exclusive autograph deal that prevents other companies from producing any cards (base, autographed, or otherwise) until a year after he makes his debut on a MLB Roster. The move means that Baseball America’s 2008 Minor League Player of the Year will not have cards in future Bowman products as Topps signs players to individual contracts to appear on its cards. And after Wieters makes his big-league debut, other card companies will be able to acquire the rights to produce standard cards, but will be unable to produce autographed cards or memorabilia cards unless they negotiate directly with Razor for the rights to do so.

Brian Gray, President of Razor Entertainment, told Beckett, “We took a shot and we are taking a shot that is unprecedented.  This could basically change the whole game.  I don’t think any company has entered this business with as much enthusiasm.”

The deal does not effect Wieter's pre-existing cards or  contracts but is completely exclusive starting today.  Wieters has had well over 100 different cards in circulation, more then half of which are autographed.  Wieters' existing cards can be found in various USA Baseball, Donruss, TRISTAR and Just Minors sets.

AFL Preview — Surprise Rafters

The 2008 Arizona Fall League season debuted last week and the Surprise Rafters fell 10-3 to Phil Hughes and the talented Peoria Javelinas. Nonetheless, the Rafters are L-O-A-D-E-D with intriguing minor league prospects from the Orioles, Indians, Dodgers, Royals, and Rangers. As a grand finale, I submit to you 10 prospects to watch...

1.) Matt Wieters---Baltimore Orioles C

  • 2008 Review: Wieters was nothing short of dominant this season at High-A Frederick and AA Bowie hitting .355 with 27 HR 91 RBI and an 82 BB/76 K ratio. Wieters is the hands down best catching prospect in all of baseball. He has no definitive weaknesses with 25-30 HR power and the ability to hit .300 on an annual basis. As a 6-5 230 lbs Catcher, one would think that he is culpable defensively, but the opposite is true. Wieters has been touted as the best defensive catcher to play in more than a decade and his rocket arm could fire 96 MPH fastballs as a college closer. If that is not enough, Wieters' leadership skills and makeup are off the charts.
  • Market Analysis: Wieters' 1st year cards are found in the 2007 Donruss Elite Extra set (#'ed to 799). The premium for this autographed card is substantial with Ebay prices ranging between $75-100. A more affordable option is his various serial #'ed 2005 Team USA autos which range between $25-30 each. Wieters is the cornerstone to the impending success of the Baltimore Orioles franchise. The future for Matt and the O's is very bright and it begins for both of them on Opening Day 2009.

2.) Justin Smoak---Texas Rangers 1B

  • 2008 Review: Smoak was one of several '08 draftees that signed at the August 31 deadline, but he was still able to muster up a .304 BA with 3 HR and 8 RBI in 56 AB. Smoak, the University of South Carolina alum, tore through the SEC in '08, hitting .383 with 23 HR 72 RBI and a 57 BB/28 K ratio. A 6-4 220 lb. switch-hitting 1B, Smoak can't help but evoke comparisons to Angels slugger Mark Texiera with a smooth and powerful swing from both sides of the plate that will hit for high average and HR numbers. Defensively, Smoak is well above average and many think that he can win Gold Gloves at the major league level.
  • Market Analysis: Smoak will be one of several young '08 draftees that will have autographed products in the debut Razor Draft Picks set. The hype of this set has been gradually picking up steam as many of the elite players from this year's draft have signed exclusive autograph and memorabilia deals with them. I was once a skeptic of this product, relegating it to another Just or Tri-Star offering that would not measure up to the major manufacturers. Now, I must admit that I am as intrigued as anyone as to how the market will respond to the release of this set. I suspect that prices for Smoak's autos will come at a premium early and will fall to more reasonable levels once the initial buzz of Razor's release has subsided. Additionally, Smoak with the rest of Razor's signees, will have non-autographed cards in the Bowman Draft set. Smoak will likely start the '09 season at AA Tulsa as the Rangers are going to promote him aggressively. Looking at the Rangers farm system, this is a scary team in the next 2-3 seasons. They are a couple pitchers away of seriously challenging the Angels for the AL West crown.

3.) Brian Matusz---Balitmore Orioles LHP

  • 2008 Review: Baltimore selected Matusz with the 4th overall pick in this year's draft. Much like Justin Smoak, Matusz signed at the deadline but did not make his minor league debut this season. Matusz was electric at the University of San Diego this season compiling a 12-2 record with a 1.71 ERA. In 105 innings, Matusz struck out 141 and walked only 22 aluminium bat-toting hitters. Matusz has a lanky 6-5 200 lb. frame that could build additional bulk, adding a couple of ticks to his 89-92 MPH fastball. Matusz has good curveball and changeup that are close to major league ready. Command is a strong point for Matusz and his sound mechanics should help him to avoid pitching-related injuries.
  • Market Analysis: Matusz is another of Razor's high profile prospects. The market for Matusz's cards should be strong, but not nearly what it will be for the bounty of offensive prospects like Smoak, Tim Beckham, Pedro Alvarez, Brett Wallace and others. Matusz is nearly major league ready and Orioles fans can't help but be excited about the new wave of young prospects (Matt Wieters, Nolan Reimold, Brandon Snyder, Chris Tillman, Jake Arrieta, etc..) that will be taking the field at Camden Yards within the next couple of seasons.

4.) Nolan Reimold---Baltimore Orioles OF

  • 2008 Review: O's fans got a dose of what Reimold can do when fully healthy. Reimold battered AA pitching this season to the tune of a .284 25 HR 84 RBI 87 runs scored line. Reimold has a power hitters frame at 6-4 210 lb. that is deceptively athletic. His right-handed swing generates easy power to all fields and he controls the strike zone effectively, earning 62 BB this season. Defensively, he has good range and a cannon arm built for RF. The main detractor to Reimold's success has been his propensity to get hurt, though his injury-free '08 season is cause for optimism.
  • Market Analysis: Reimold has several 1st year cards in the various 2005 Bowman products with his Bowman Chrome Draft and Bowman Sterling cards commanding the most demand. His chromes sell routinely for $1.00-1.50 each and his Sterlings can be had for $2.00-2.50. Reimold reminds me of former Oriole slugger Jay Gibbons, but I think that Nolan will be a better player for a longer time. Expect Reimold to start 2009 at AAA with a promotion to Baltimore happening soon. He likely will start in LF to form a talented young outfield of Reimold, Adam Jones and Nick Markakis.
