Christmas Cards

People aren't the only things packed with Christmas cheer around this time of year, packs of cards also contain their own bit of Christmas.  Can you believe that Santa Claus has his own card?  There isn't just one, but tons that dawn St. Nick's image.  Santa's first card appeared back in 1989 and was a promo from the now deceased card manufacturer Pro Set.  The '89 Pro Set card of good old St. Nick still sells for around $10.00, which is a lot considering the time they were printed.  A lot of collectors got a kick out of it and other card companies started printed cards of Santa Claus.  Pro Line introduced collectors to Santa's first certified autograph back in 1991.  One version of the Pro Line autograph is limited to only 200 copies.  Last year, Topps made a Santa Claus Holiday Gift Set that contained 18 cards, which included an autograph and Santa's first relic card containing an actual piece of suit.  The rest of the cards in the set show Santa in many classic Topps card designs, including Santa posed in the famous 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle #311 position.   Probably my favorite Santa Claus card would be from 2002 Playoff Contenders.  I really like the design of the set, plus Santa has signed it in red ink which seems appropriate for the holiday season.

Another favorite comes from a set produced by Sport Kings back in 2002.  Card number S2 in the set features Santa holding a baseball bat which I could see would make some people uncomfortable.  It looks like Santa is about to smack an elf who didn't quite make their quota.  Within the last few years, there have been a lot of gimmick cards injected into the hobby and have angered many collectors.  These are one type of cards I would like to see them continue printing.  I think they look funny, and you never know when Santa might popup.  HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!!

1997: The Year that Changed the Sports Card Hobby

When you look back in time throughout the 100+ years sports card collecting has been around, the year 1997 sticks out like a sore thumb. In 1997 there were significant releases in the hobby that made an impact that continues to this day.

To start off, Upper Deck released the first memorabilia cards that the hobby had ever seen. To this day the 1997 Upper Deck Ken Griffey Jr jersey card still sells for around $150.00. That’s not too bad considering its not even serial numbered and contains only a small teal colored piece of cloth. As the year went on, Upper Deck did release more jersey cards for football, hockey, and basketball.

Football collectors went crazy over the 1997 Upper Deck Legends set. Every box contained four autographs of legendary players such as Dick Butkus, Walter Payton, Franco Harris and much more. Some of these autographs are extremely difficult to find and some of them were never even released, a group which included Sid Luckman. One of the big reasons why this set is so popular is because all the autographs are on card and the checklist of players is unbelievable. In addition to the autographs, this set has some great insert cards like Big Game Hunters and Marquee Match-ups. Boxes of this product skyrocketed in price and now cannot be found for less then a few hundred dollars.

What is better than an autographed card? How about an autographed card that you can see through? That is what 1997 Pinnacle Inscriptions introduced to football card collectors. Many of these autographs are serial numbered into the hundreds even thousands, but back then that was very limited. The checklist contains players such as Favre, Marino, Elway, and Sanders.

One of the highest end products in 1997 was Pinnacle Totally Certified which was made for baseball, football, basketball, and hockey. Every card in the set featured a “peel off” sticker that protected the very condition sensitive surface. Collectors love, even to this day, to hunt for the rare parallel versions of the base. Personally, I think the Mirror Gold inserts look the best.

I guess you could say that “prospecting” received a huge surge during 1997 because Topps released their first version of Bowman Chrome. In the years before, Topps made regular Bowman cards but the new Chrome set gave collectors new parallels and refractors to collect. Some key rookie cards from 1997 Bowman Chrome would include Kerry Wood, Lance Berkman, Vernon Well, Eric Chavez, and Miguel Tejada. Out of all the years Bowman Chrome has been produced, I think the 1997 version has the best looking refractors.

In 1997 Tiger Woods shook up the game of golf after winning the Masters, and people were on the hunt for his cards. One of his few cards at the time was the 97-98 Grand Slam Ventures Masters Collection card.

1997 was such a big year for the sport card collecting hobby, and I wish that we would have more years like it. Just like a lot of things, the first version of a product is the best.

Donruss Interviews Dallas Cowboys Running Back Felix Jones

In this recently released video Donruss interviews Dallas Cowboys rookie running back, Felix Jones.  Felix has jump started his NFL career in a big way. Through his first 5 NFL games Jones has rushed to the tune of 266 yards and 3 touchdowns off of only 30 carries. His yards per carry average currently stands at a gaudy 8.9 yards. His accent to superstardom has been temporarily stymied by injury, but expect him to pick up right where he left off as soon as he returns to the field.

Upper Deck Announces Launch of New ASV Sports Figure Product Line

The Upper Deck Company issued a press release Monday afternoon to announce the debut of its first-ever, retail collectible line of All-Star Vinyl Sports Figures.  The first wave of these 9 inch tall sports figures, scheduled for release next week, will include various NFL Stars including Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, LaDanian Tomlinson, Eli Manning, and Tony Romo.  Subsequent releases will depict stars from the other primary professional sports associations - the MLB, NBA, and NHL.

Dave Sanders, director of Upper Deck Authenticated, had this to say regarding the new ASV product line,“We’ve made great strides in our own hobby marketplace with earlier launches of the All-Star Vinyl line, which was configured in extremely limited quantities for the hardcore sports and vinyl figure collector.  But now the popularly comic-stylized look of the ASV line will be available to sports fans and consumers through a new retail-based configuration sold exclusively at Toys ‘R Us stores.  While the All-Star Vinyl line has had a niche following within the sports figure hobby, we’re really looking forward to exposing more and more consumers to our ultra-hip sports vinyl figures.  With the holidays fast approaching, there’s no better time to unveil a cool collectible like this one.”

The next ASV release will be a basketball themed product.  NBA Stars LeBron James, Kobe Bryant and Kevin Garnett will all make appearances in the set which is currently slated for release in December.  This will be followed by yet a third Upper Deck ASV product in February of 2009 which will feature sports legends from a mix of different sports.  The Sports Legends Series will include Tiger Woods and Muhammad Ali, among others.

Each All-Star Vinyl Figure will be paired with an exclusive Upper Deck trading card of the featured athlete.  The MSRP for each individually packaged figure is $19.99 - $24.99 and can be purchased via the Toys-R-Us Website and retail location nationwide.
