2009 Topps Platinum Football
Box Price:$97 - $107When opening 2009 Topps Platinum Football, it felt like I was opening a product that should cost a lot more than $5.99 a pack! Topps Platinum for the most part is on par with the considerably more expensive Finest and Bowman Sterling products. I liked how the "non-rookie" base cards were made on a considerably cheaper, thinner stock. One that didn't use a "chrome-esque" technology. Then, they went all out on the Rookie cards; using everything from Bowman Sterling like stock, to an insane 50+ Point stock for some of the parallel refractors! What a concept, save money by putting less into the non-rookie base cards no one wants anyways.
Another great thing about Platinum is the Rookie Patch Autos! They bear resemblance to Triple Threads. Instead of using multiple relics like Triple Threads, they use a single, thick, often multi-colored patch on the best cards. I pulled a Percy Harvin Jersey Auto Refractor /25 that might be the coolest looking hit I've got this season.
I2009 Topps Platinum Football is one of this years' pleasant surprises. If you have a chance to open some, I say it's a low risk, at worst you can sell it off to set builders and loyal Topps' fans who are paying their respects by chasing the beloved card companies final football offering.
Everyone was interested to see how Topps would react to the news of being dropped from the NFL's plans. Some thought they might "mail it in". Yes, you could call Platinum and Chicle a massive "Sticker Dump". But, I'm not going to complain about getting too many autos. Both products are extremely polished and well done. Topps left the NFL with class and gave the fans one last hurrah. I can't wait until National Chicle Baseball, it's should be pretty awesome!
